10 Sept 11 – Wormley 0-1 Letchworth Garden City Eagles

Eagles came away from Wormley with all three points after grinding out a hard fought victory.

Harry Holland’s first half goal proved to be the difference between the two sides, and although Eagles created the most chances, they were meade to sweat in the final few minutes when Wormley finally began to put on some pressure.
Eagles enjoyed long spells of pressure in the first half but didn’t really test Wormley until Holland’s goal. He recieved a pass from strike partner John Coley with his back to goal and brilliantly spun his defender, before sliding an accurate finish across the keeper.

That was after half an hour, and it stayed that way until the break.

Wormley showed little ambition in the second period and allowed Eagles to camp in their half, but clear cut chances were hard to come by.

Connor Pennery was at the end of a three man move but volleyed over the bar, and Lee Pateman thought he should have had a penalty when he jinked his way into the area to be brought down. The referee waved didn’t see it that way and allowed play to continue.

Wormley sensed they might be able to get something from the game with 15 minutes remaining when Eagles keeper Dan Eely had to be taken off with a serious looking knee injury. With no substitute keeper on the bench, full back Paul McGennity donned the gloves for the closing stages.

This gave Wormley some fight, and McGebbity had to be alert to brilliantly stop two one-on-one chances in the final five minutes. He also confidently claimed a dangerous free-kick in stoppage time.

It was a hard fought victory for Eagles against a side that always puts up a fight. Next week they face Codicote at home in an intruiging clash between two in form teams.
