Today was another big test for the eagles – today’s visitors had been league champions in 2009/10 and runners up last season. They had also beaten us twice last season in cup games 2-0 and 3-0.
Letchworth started brightly with Antcliffe having our first shot. Moments later De La Salle headed just over after hard work from Drackford had earned eagles a corner. In the 17th minute Adide the Letchworth keeper was called into action and responded with a great save. Ten minutes later Eagles had a free kick on the far touch line Watson pushed up from the back. I think his marker must have been watching the sport on the pitch behind and tried to rugby tackle Watson. The ref spotted this and pointed to the spot. De La Salle planted the ball in bottom corner 1-0 Eagles.
The goal obviously upset our vistors as their left winger ran down line laid the ball back to the edge of box and the shot was deflected into the goal 1-1 31 mins played. Moments later Hinton should have taken the lead but thankfully shot over the bar.
Five minutes into the second half a great kick from Adide found De La Salle on edge of Hinton’s box Della turned into the box and was fouled by keeper another penalty and the same man made it 10 goals in 3 games.
In the next five minutes Hinton once again came at Eagles but two superb saves by Adide kept the score at 2-1. On the hour mark the Hinton keeper made a great save from Drackford. In the 67th minute Adide made yet another great save. In the 70th minute Drackford came of for Large. The former was very happy when he came off (not). The substitution for the 3rd week in a row proved to be inspired because with the next attack Large made a great run and finished superbly like his hero Rooney to give Eagles a 2 goal cushion with 15 minutes on the clock.
The 3 points stayed with Letchworth and means the team are top of the league – Jimmy Adide was todays man of the match.
Next Saturday the Reserves are at home to Sarrett Res come along and support the lads and help them stay top of the league. 3pm ko
