Eagles started their pre season preparations with two difficult games against higher level opposition from Hitchin Town FC and Barton Rovers FC.
The game against Hitchin on Saturday 14 July was played at Hitchin Arena in continual pouring rain, but both teams put all their efforts into impressing the respective team managers. Hitchin fielded a mixture of first team players and triallists and were first to get off the mark after the first 15 minutes. With the Eagles defence caught open at the back Hitchin scored with a cleanly placed shot from 20 yards after a clear run on goal. Nothing goalie Dan Goade to do to stop the ball and he was soon beaten by a header from a corner. The shorter eagles defenders were outjumped and out muscled by taller and stronger opponents. The third goal for Hitchin was probably the best of the game, a screamer from all of 30 yards that whistled into the top corner of the net. During the first half the Eagles never troubled the Hitchin goalie, and their back 4 was under constant pressure.
Second half things improved a bit when 10 minutes after half time a Danny Large shot from 25 yards crept under the Hitchin keepers body and squirmed into the net. That prompted Hitchin into making a stronger effort with new players as the eagles tired. John Frendo showed why he is a class striker from a higher level and the Canaries finally ran out 6-1 winners.
The following Tuesday Eagles took on Barton Rovers at Silsoe, on a much brighter evening with no rain. The Eagles back 4 again looked assured until some sucker passes through the middle enabled Barton to build up a 3-0 lead by half time. Barton added another couple of goals second half, but the star turn for the eagles was second half sub Jason Drackford who latched on to a pass in the right channel of the Barton half and chipped a wonderful shot from 30 yards over the Barton goalie and into the top corner of the net to make the score 3-1. Truly a gem of a goal from Jason who was struggling against the light without his contact lenses!
This weekend the eagles visit a side inNorwich, hoping for better fortune
