Eagles worked hard to overcome a wet and slippery surface and beat Old Bradwell Utd from the Spartan South Midland League., but with better finishing the visitors could have offered a stiffer challenge.
Eagles started slowly and within the first 10 mins goalie Dan Goad had to come out quickly from his goal to smother the ball from an onrushing Bradwell forward, who also blasted wide when clean through the middle of the penalty area.. Eagles then settled down and shortly after got their noses in front following an excellent passing move involving Krystian Malachak and a miscued shot from Hunter Diack, from which JJ Brown calmly passed the ball into the net.
Old Bradwell should have equalised soon after when a quick break out of defence caught eagles defenders napping, but Sam Williams recovered well and made a fine blocking tackle.
Play swung from end to end, with a shot from Malachak being deflected narrowly wide and the visiting goalkeeper making a smart save from JJ Brown. Eagles kept up the pressure and after 30 minutes a Sam Gittings shot was well saved by the goalie when he was put clear on the left. Eagles were not to be denied and a couple of minutes later Malachak scored an easy goal after a shot on goal was spilled by the keeper.
Eagles continued to make chances with a Gittings shot deflected wide of the post by the goalie before the third goal arrived after 45 minutes when Hunter Diack scored from inside the penalty area.
Eagles took their foot off the gas in the second half but continued to have chances to increase their lead. Old Bradwell continued to threaten with quick attacks out of defence and would have scored after 60 minutes but for a fine saving tackle by Joe Luca on the edge of the penalty. Malachak almost finished off a fine move and cross from Taylor Rhiney on the right , who himself then shot wide when put though on goal.
After 75 minutes Old Bradwell finally got the goal they deserved after a scramble in the eagles penalty area left an attacker clear to push the ball into an open net from 6 yards.. Eagles responded and after 80 minutes David Locke raced clear on the left, pulled the ball back low from almost on the goal line, and Michell Cox finished at the far post from a couple of yards out. Dan Goad then made 2 sharp saves in quick succession as mistakes increased on the greasy pitch in pouring rain.
Mitch Cox missed a penalty for the Eagles when he tried for the top corner and put the ball too close to the goalie, and the visitors scored with almost the last kick of the match.
A very entertaining game for spectators but one the players probably did not enjoy because of the bad weather conditions almost throughout.
