HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
The Eagles were one of the few teams to play locally on Saturday having switched their home game against Standon and Puckeridge to Hitchin Arena all weather surface. They failed to take all 3 points by wasteful finishing and an inspired performance by the Standon keeper Radcliff who pulled off a series of stunning saves.
Eagles are slow starters and once again went behind to an early goal after 10 minutes with a smart finish on the edge of the area after the Standon player had turned the Eagles defence, his shot into the top corner giving Dan Goad no chance.
Eagles struck back quickly and within a couple of minutes Krystian Malachak hit the bar from a Hunter Diack cross. Mitch Cox then headed inches wide from a Sam Gittings cross.
Standon continued to press on the break and almost scored after 20 minutes when a shot from 20 yards went narrowly past the post. Eagles piled on the pressure 10 minutes before half time and a host of chances when begging when keeper Radcliff made three stunning saves in succession from Sam Williams, and Gittings. Hunter Diack was clear on goal but blasted over from less than 8 yards, a Mitch Cox header was saved low to the right and on the stoke of half time a 20 yard free kick was pushed just wide of the post at full stretch by Radcliff.
Eagles were quickly out of the traps after half time and within a couple of minutes a shot from Diack was pushed brilliantly over the bar by Radcliff. Sub Ben L’Honore almost beat the keeper on 60 minutes following a corner that only partly palmed away by the keeper, but he shot over from a few yards out. Eventually the eagles goal did come from John Styne who scored with a header from a Cox cross after 75 minutes.
Standon had their chances on the break but Eagles should have won the game with 10 minutes left when L’Honore walked round several Standon defenders inside the penalty area, including the keeper, only to have his half hit shot hacked off the line by a covering defender.
Eagles failed to take a couple of half chances before Radcliff performed another fine save in the last 5 minutes to push over a rasping 25 yard left foot blaster from Malachak that seemed destined for the top corner of the net.
Standon saw out the remainder of the game which Eagles should have won comfortably on chances created.
