Eagles completed a miserable Easter weekend of fixtures by losing to lowly Knebworth, who scored from the few chances created whereas Eagles strikers continued to struggle when presented with good goal scoring opportunities. Knebworth were saved on 2 occasions by the woodwork but stuck to the task and emerged clear winners at the end of the game.
Eagles seem to start very slowly and the habit of conceding early goals was again evident in this match. Knebworth had already signalled their attacking intentions in the 10 th minute when Eagles keeper Dan Goad had to block a shot from close in and the rebound was scrambled away. Two minutes later in a similar move on the left Goad again blocked the shot but this time the ball was turned into net from an acute angle 6 yards out.
Eagles pressed and in the 37 th minute Mich Cox hit the crossbar from a direct free kick from distance. Shortly after Eagles got the equalising goal after a cross from the right by Jaz Genesis was hammered into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards by Ben L’Honore.. Krystian Malachak then volleyed over from 30 yards before racing the length of the pitch past chasing defenders only to lose the final touch as the ball was collected by the Knebworth keeper.
The second half had barely begun before Knebworth scored again with eagles defenders napping after half time refreshments. Eagles should have scored after 60 minutes after a fierce shot from Malachak was saved to the feet of Genesis who planted the ball into the body of the prone keeper from the edge of the goal area instead of the empty net.. This signalled a period of Eagles pressure and Sam Gittings almost scored after a mazzy dribble and a shot placed wide of the keeper which did not have sufficient power to clear a covering defender on the line.
L’ Honore almost wriggled through after another individual effort but was then sent off 10 minutes from the end for a wild tackle on an opponent that the referee deemed was sufficiently dangerous as to warrant a straight red card.
10 men Eagles then struggled to make headway against a resolute Knebworth who packed all but 2 players in front of their goal.. Eagles had a couple of direct free kicks as the game continued, but were vulnerable to the counter attack.Almost on time Knebworth broke away . A cross was chested down by Sam Williams but into the path of a Knebworth forward who hit a sweet shot into the top corner from 20 yards giving Goad no chance.
Eagles might have second a second in the dying moments but a free kick from Cox was palmed safely over by the keeper.
