EAGLES LEAVE IT LATE
After going 2 goals down in the first five minutes Eagles themselves scored twice in the closing minutes to force a 3-3 draw in the opening fixture of the new season at Pixmore.
With a strong wind behind themWormley opened the scoring with their first real attack of the game. A corner was conceded by Eagles on the left, which keeper Dan Goad managed to palm away for a corner from the opposite side. This time eagles defence were less fortunate. Goad under challenge failed to clear and Wormley netted with a far post header yards from the Eagles goal line.
Hardly had play restarted before Wormley went 2-0 ahead with a freak goal from at least 35 yards. The bouncing ball was hit on the volley and it sailed over Goad’s head with the wind behind it into the net.
Eagles started to put together some good football and on 12 minutes clawed a goal back when David Locke broke clear of the Wormley defence on the left. His shot was blocked by the keeper but Sam Gittings made no mistake from 15 yards out. He almost repeated the goal a few minutes later but this time his shot was smothered by the keeper.
After 35 minutes and sustained eagles pressure Gittings hit the post with a rasping drive from 20 yards out which beat the keeper but rebounded into play before being cleared. Hunter Diack then almost scored with a shot from 15 yards which the keeper did well to turn round the post. Wormley remained pinned back for most of the rest of the half but were dangerous on the break. Just before half time they had a great opportunity to go further ahead but their no 9 blazed high and wide from inside the penalty area when clear on goal.
Eagles again started slowly in the second half and within a few minutes Wormley had grabbed a third goal when the balled was fired through a clutch of eagles defenders to beat Goad.. They almost scored again on the break a few minutes later but Goad managed to deflect a goal bound shot just wide. The resulting corner was not properly cleared and the ball somehow failed to find the net. Wormley were doing all the running and created a number of chances. Goad made a good save, Ben L’Honore managed to get a last minute block tackle to deny another Wornmley goal and the ball was blazed wide when eagles sub Luke Shimell passed the ball to an opponent on the edge of the eagles penalty area.
Eagles threw all players into attack for the last 10 minutes and they finally managed to break down Wormley’s resistance. After Gittings almost intercepted a poor Wormley free kick near the edge of the penalty area a goal bound effort was headed off the line by a Wormley defender when a goal looked certain following a cross from a Mitchell Cox free kick. Ben L’Honore finally broke their resistance a few minutes from full time, latching on to a ball over the top of the defence from Shane Carthy and calmly passing the ball into the net from a few yards. Almost on full time he scored again heading home from a Carl Williams flicked pass to make the final score 3-3 ..
