Eagles continued their disappointing start to the season with another home defeat against a hard working Knebworth. On balance of chances Eagles should have won but a combination of missed opportunities and some good saves from the Knebworth keeper denied them the win they deserved.
Knebworth went ahead after 12 minutes when the ball was not cleared by eagles defenders and a shot from near the penalty spot easily beat eagles debut keeper James Gilbert. It did not take eagles long to recover and 5 minutes they were level when Sam Williams banged the ball home in a goalmouth scramble.
After 25 minutes Knebworth almost regained the league when a Knebworth attacker went clear following a bad mistake by an eagles defender, but he shot high and wide from 12 yards out.. Eagles stormed back and a low cross from Carl Williams was only just cleared by a covering defender with Ben L’Honore ready to net from a few yards out.. A header from the resulting corner was easily held by the keeper.
After half an hour a free kick by Hunter Diack was headed on by Gittings and a shot from L,Honore was parried by the keeper.. There was a scramble from the resulting corner as eagles tried to force the ball into the net from close in and the keeper then made a good save from a shot by Williams. Eagles were playing flowing football and a Gittings cross was narrowly missed by L’Honore with the goal at his mercy and the same player shot straight at the keeper when well placed 20 yards out.
At half time honours remained even at 1-1 and play was evenly balanced until on 60 minutes Knebworth went ahead again . The ball was crossed low into the Eagles penalty area and slotted home from 10 yards before eagles defenders could get a touch. A few minutes later L’Honore forced a good save from the keeper deflecting the ball on to a post and away from danger..Knebworth added another after 70 minutes and Eagles were struggling.
Shane Carthy pushed the ball just wide after a free kick from the right found him in space a few yards out , but Knebworth almost scored again when they missed an open goal, the ball rebounding off the keeper’s knees from a shot from 12 yards. As Eagles pressed forward gaps opened up at the back and Knebworth missed further opportunities to increase the lead. . In the last 10 minutes the Knebworth keeper made a good save from a low shot by Williams to push the ball wide of the post and Gittings broke clear of chasing defenders on the left only for his low shot from edge of the area to whistle wide of the post. Knebworth held firm and the eagles again lost a game they could have won if chances had been taken.
