HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISON
Eagles finished strongly as the visitors tired but were unable to clinch a win at Pixmore in an often scrappy game.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with few clear cut chances. . Standon missed a couple of good opportunities in the first 10 minutes and after 20 minutes were unlucky not to score as the ball bobbed around the eagles gaol before a shot finally skimmed over the crossbar. Shortly after a fierce shot from 18 yards from Eagles Hunter Diack whistled just over the Standon bar with the keeper well beaten and after 30 minutes a dipping strike from over 30 yards out by Sam Gittings dipped just too late as it cleared the cross bar by inches.
Just as the eagles were beginning to assert themselves they went behind to a sucker goal . Standon cleared the ball quickly upfield, eagles defenders were caught out of position and a cross from the left was headed home into the bottom corner of the net giving keeper Dan Goad no chance.
Eagles immediately responded and almost equalised as the ball flashed agonisingly past the Standon post with the keeper out of position. On 40 minutes they should have equalised . Carl Williams wriggled clear of defenders inside the penalty area but rather than shoot himself he passed the ball across goal to his namesake defender Sam Williams, who facing an empty net from 10 yards out blasted the ball high over the bar.
Eagles started the second half brightly and after a few minutes first Scott Gilzean forced the keeper into a good save, the ball then ran to Jamie Platt but his shot was charged down by a defender for a corner.
Play swung from end to end but after 56 minutes Eagles equalised with a magnificent goal from Gilzean who ran on to a flicked pass from Carl Williams and raced through the Standon defence to beat the keeper with a low shot into the net. Standon almost pulled the goal back minutes later when the no 9 just failed to make a good connection with his head to a cross from the right.
As Standon tired eagles surged forward but despite having the better chances in the last 10 minutes they failed to get the winning gaol.. Carl Williams low shot from 15 yards went a foot wide of the far post, and both sides had to settle for a draw.
