HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIV
Eagles sank to their worst defeat of the season against bottom of the table Chipperfield Corinthians with a poor performance from start to finish, against a side who relied on the long ball booted upfield and experienced players who could teach the eagles youngsters a few things about scoring goals and defending properly.
It started badly after the first 5 minutes when Eagles Lewis Mitchell and keeper Dan Goad both misunderstood each others intentions leaving the ball to a lone Chipperfield forward with no danger apparent, who then squared the ball across goal for it to be swept into an unguarded net.
Eagles then enjoyed a bright 15 minute period when they moved the ball well and used the speed of Scott Gilzean on the right wing to cause serious problems for the home defence but without troubling the keeper. Chipperfield almost scored in another long ball breakaway but keeper Goad redeemed himself with a fine diving save at the feet of an on rushing forward.
The game settled into a pattern with neither side creating any further goal scoring chances until just before half time when Chipperfield scored again.Goad made an excellent save to parry a shot from 15 yards but could only push the ball into the path of another Chipperfield forward who banged the ball into the unguarded net from near the penalty spot with no Eagles defender anywhere close to him. Debutant Lewis Curtis almost got a goal back for eagles just on half time but the keeper just managed to tip over the crossbar a clever chipped shot from just inside the area.
It did not take Chipperfield much time to get going in the second half as a pacey run through the eagles defence and a strong shot over Goad into the top corner finished a fine individual effort.
Eagles managed to peg a goal back after 60 minutes when Sam Gittings accepted a pass from Curtis and calmy stroked the ball into the net from inside the penalty area. Eagles then pushed forward to try and get mare goals and it proved their undoing. A shot from distance whistled past a post after 75 served notice that Chipperfield remained dangerous on the break . Eagles had a couple good efforts from a free kick from Mitch Cox from outside the area that passed just wide of a post, then Ricky Small looked certain to score from inside the area but placed a fierce shot inches wide of the far post.
Chipperfield then scored twice in the last 10 minutes of the game as the eagles defence collapsed giving players far too much room to turn on the ball and give keeper Goad no chance.T he score line flattered Chipperfield, but the eagles need to put in a far better performance in forthcoming games if they are not to avoid further heavy defeats.
