HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
A Carl Williams free kick in the first half settled a closely fought game in difficult conditions at Wormley. Both sides had chances to add to the score sheet but in the end a single goal was enough to see the eagles to victory.
The first fifteen minutes produced few goal scoring opportunities with both sides taking time to settle down on a heavy pitch but Eagles got a dream start after the first quarter of an hour when Carl Williams was fouled near the edge of the Wormley penalty area in a central position. He took the free kick himself and scored with an excellent kick into the top corner of the net.. Within minutes it was almost 2-0 when a goal bound shot was deflected off a Wormley defender into the arms of the keeper but Wormley fought back and were unlucky not to score from a fast break out of defence and a cross which flashed across the eagles penalty area with no Wormley player able to add a finishing touc, and then a break down the centre of the field that ended when the ball was lofted high over the Eagles cross bar.
On 25 minutes Eagles Jamie Farrar headed just over the bar from a cross from the right, and then Ricky Small blasted the ball over the bar from a cross by a fast and tricky Dami Fajiobi who was having an inspiring game on his return to Eagles duty.
A few minutes into the second half Central defender Den Crook shot over the bar when well placed near the penalty spot and plenty of gaol to aim at, and he did so again on 60 minutes when he reacted first to a corner from Mitch Cox.
Eagles were having most of the play and the chances but Wormley did threaten on the break as eagles pushed forward to look for the second goal. Wormley missed an open goal with only keeper Dan Goad to beat, the ball going well wide of his post.
In a flowing move started by Fajiobi beating several Wormley defenders for pace and trickery Carl Williams just failed to connect with his excellent cross as the keeper made a timely interception. Mich Cox went on a fine jinking run down the centre but placed the ball wide of the advancing keeper and after 80 minutes a shot from Jamie Platt was deflected just wide of the Wormley goal with the keeper beaten. This was to be Platt’s last involvement in the game as he was carried off with a knee injury.
The change disrupted the Eagles who were pushed back by Wormley for the last 10 minutes of the game. Crook did head just wide from a corner by Cox but it was Wormley who should have scored in the dying minutes when the ball flashed across the face of the Eagles goal with no attacking player within yards of the ball to push it into the net.
As the light faded and the rain started to fall Eagles held out for a well earned victory.
