HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles completed their home programme with an emphatic win over relegated Hinton, and were unlucky not to score a lot more goals but for some indifferent finishing and good saves by the Hinton keeper in the second half.
Eagles scored first after 10 minutes in only their second attempt on goal when Sam Gittings smashed a pass from Den Crook into the roof of the Hinton goal.. David Locke almost made it 2 a few minutes later when he dribbled through the Hinton defence but his weak shot was easily held by the keeper..
Eagles piled on the pressure and Scott Gilzean ran through a static Hinton defence only for his low goal bound shot to be deflected wide by the keeper. The corner was cleared initially but returned into the middle to be pushed home by Carl Williams. On the half hour a fine flowing move by several eagles players was almost completed by Locke but his strongly hit shot from 15 yards flashed just high and wide.
Hinton hardly threatened the Eagles goal but keeper Dan Goad had to be alert to smartly take the ball off an onrushing forward as Hinton broke clear of the Eagles defence. The keeper then fumbled a cross from the left just on half time, but the ball was eventually scrambled out of play and then put over the bar from the resultant corner.
Eagles opened the second half in determined mood and sub Lloyd Lee almost scored from close range after the ball had bobbled around the Hinton goal area, but it eventually trickled just wide of a post. After 55 minutes eagles went 3-0 ahead when Carl Williams shot home from a Gittings cross.. 5 minutes later it was 4-0 when Gilzean slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards after a smart back heel pass from Gittings wrong footed Hinton defenders..
Hinton posed the occasional threat and eventually scored a consolation goal 15 minutes time when a cross from the right was pushed home from the edge of the goal area.
Eagles surged back for the last quarter of the game missing a number of good scoring chances.. Gilzean almost got a second goal after a surging run down the centre of the field, and then sub Tristan Potkins placed the ball wide of keeper and post from 12 yards.. A Den Crook lobbed shot from well outside the penalty area went wide with the Hinton keeper well out of position, , and Carl Williams should have got his hat trick when he burst through the centre of the field only for his low shot to be placed too close to the Hinton keeper.. Jamie Farrar did the same when also clear on goal, and the keeper then made an excellent save to palm over a shot from Crook. A shot from the corner then hit Gilzean when he was standing close to the line, to deny eagles a certain fifth goal.
