Eagles suffered their biggest ever league defeat going down to a strong Bedmond side seeking to win the league title. Eagles fielded a side weakened by the withdrawal of most first team players because injury or work or social commitments.
Eagles were 2 goals down in the first 5 minutes, despite a brave save by Dan Goad which deflected the ball into the path of an unmarked forward who shot into an empty net for the second goal.
Eagles never really threatened the Bedmond goal in the whole of the first half as stand in centre forward Jason Valentine was subject to some rough physical treatment by Bedmond defenders. Eagles had a good penalty claim waved away for one particularly strong challenge and on the half hour Bedmond went 3-0 ahead when a free kick conceded by Ryan Setters on the left was headed into the top corner of the Eagles net giving keeper Goad no chance..
Eagles tried to respond and Scott Gilzean got clear of the Bedmond defence only for his low shot to be deflected over the bar by a covering defender.
After 38 minutes the score was 4-0 when a cross from the right was headed in the bottom corner of the eagles net.
After half time Eagles hopes of a recovery were dashed when after 5 minutes a cross was poked into the corner of the eagles net, Bedmond having previously given warning of their intent when a shot hit the eagles post with Goad well beaten. Goals then followed in quick succession, and within the next 10 minutes the score had reached 8-0 due to a combination of poor defending and Bedmond pressure as Eagles struggled to get the ball into the opposition half.
On 70 minutes Tristan Potkins missed a great chance to pull a goal back when he toe poked the ball just wide of an open net after simply running out of energy to get to the ball from a deep position, but a few minutes later they get a goal when following yet another foul on Valentine, Scott Gilzean hit a low free kick through a wall of defenders from the edge of the penalty into the bottom corner of the Bedmond net.
However, after 75 minutes it was 9-1 when a low cross was tapped into an undefended net and in the last minute a Bedmond forward ghosted past a static Ryan O’Mahony to shoot into the bottom corner and make it a round 10 goals to the home side.
Eagles young players never stopped running but just could not compete with a far better side technically and physically.
