AUBREY CUP 1ST ROUND
Bovingdon paid for a host of missed chances in the first half of even contest, before Eagles finally secured the game in extra time.
In the first 10 minutes neither side had chances to open the scoring as play was disrupted by a series of free kicks. Eagles leading scorer Sam Gittings almost got the first when he chased a long ball down the centre only for the Bovingdon keeper to clear the ball on the edge of his penalty area, but it was Bovingdon who went closest to scoring after 15 minutes when the ball was miskicked when an unmarked home attacker faced an open goal. The ball ran loose and Eagles keeper Dan Goad had to make a smart stop low down to field a shot from 15 yards.
Eagles surged back with another long ball down the centre that John Coley chased but just failed to push home then Shane Carthy pulled a shot a yard wide of the post after he had made a shooting opportunity for himself near the edge of the home penalty area..He then headed a cross from Ricky Small just wide as Eagles counter attacked..
Leading scorer Gittings almost broke the deadlock on the half hour when he headed a cross from Coley towards the gaol and the keeper made a fine save to push it on to the crossbar . Bovingdon should then have scored when defender Den Crook was dispossessed on the edge of the Eagles penalty area , but an unmarked forward totally miskicked in front of an open goal, and Goad had to make a smart save before ball was eventually scrambled away. Bovingdon wasted another chance on 40 minutes when the ball was blasted high over the Eagles cross bar with all the goal to aim at and then the ball hit the foot of the Eagles post, rolled along the goal line and was finally hacked into touch. In the final action of the half Crook then headed a cross from Mitch Cox on to the Bovingdon cross bar.
The second half ended in stalemate as both sides failed to create a clear opportunity, although on 65 minutes Gittings did pass the ball into the net from a pass from Coley only to be ruled offside. Eagles lived dangerously at times but almost got the winner at the end of normal time when Gittings shot was saved by the keeper.
Crook broke the deadlock in the first half of extra time with a bullet header into the top corner of the net for the Eagles following a Cox corner, but then Goad had to make a point blank save to turn the ball wide of a post after a muddle in the Eagles defence. Within minutes of the second period Eagles scored again when Gittings finally got the goal his efforts deserved. He then nearly got a second when his shot was beaten away by the keeper, and Bovingdon scored a consolation goal in the last minute following a total mix up between the keeper and defender which allowed Bovingdon to cross the ball across an unguarded area into the path of an onrushing forward who easily netted from a few yards out.
