HERTS FA SENIOR CENTENARY TROPHY 2ND ROUND
A poor Wodson Park from the Spartan South Midland League division 1 failed to trouble an Eagles team looking for its tenth successive victory in all competitions.
Eagles started brightly with Paul McGennity just failing to meet a Mitch Cox free kick at the far post from a couple of yards out and then Paul Morris shot wide of goal from the edge of the penalty area when put clear by a pass from Dami Fajiobi. It took 25 minutes for the home side to muster a threat to the Eagles goal, and even then it was a cross cum shot from the right wing which keeper James Gilbert had to stretch to push on to the outside of his far post and to safety.
After 35 minutes of an even but dull first half Eagles got the first goal when Dami Fajiobi headed in a corner from Cox at the far post. He then broke clear of the Wodson defence and forced the keeper to dash out of his goal to clear the ball.
In the second half Eagles came out with renewed purpose but the home appeared listless and unable to raise its game sufficiently to challenge a strong Eagles back four. There was an early period of constant Eagles pressure before Paul Morris showed exquisite skill in beating two defenders to cross into the penalty area. Fajiobi’s shot was parried by the keeper back to Morris, who blasted the ball over the cross bar.
The killer goal finally came after 68 minutes when another excellent corner by Cox was tipped off the head of the onrushing Den Crook for another corner, which the keeper failed to gather. The ball ran lose to veteran striker John Coley, who fired it into the roof of the net through a crowd of players. Shane Carthy then burst down the centre of the field and forced the keeper to save a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Coley then blazed over the bar from 10 yards after a Cox free kick was not properly cleared, and a few minutes later shot across the face of the Wodson goal from a narrow angle with no one able to apply the finishing touch. As the rain started to pour down he finally got his second goal when under pressure the keeper dropped the ball at Coley’s feet, leaving him with the easy task of passing the ball into an empty net.
Eagles final goal came almost on the stroke of time when Carthy capped another hard running performance and ran through a static defence to pass the ball into the corner of the net from 15 yards. With the last kick of the game he almost got a second when he blasted the ball towards the goal only for the keeper to pull off a fine save and push the ball round the post.
Overall a solid Eagles performance against weak opposition from a higher league.
