HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
After cruising to a 2-0 lead within the first half hour of the game Eagles were fortunate to come away with a draw after sustained pressure from Standon in the second half .
Eagles went ahead after 10 minutes when Carl Williams shot high into the net from the edge of the penalty area after a free kick by Sam Gittings was not cleared properly by Standon. Charlie Thake almost scored seconds later after being played in by John Coley, but his shot was saved by the keeper. The second goal followed minutes later when Ricky Small headed in a corner from a Williams corner.
Eagles were rampant and John Coley beat several defenders before dragging his shot wide of a post, and on the half hour he chased a clearance down the centre of the field but was deemed to have fouled the keeper as the two players collided..
It was a real surprise when Standon pegged a goal back on the stroke of half time when a long cross evaded defenders and was headed into an open net as keeper Dan Goad failed to reach the ball..
After half time Standon had the greater possession but Eagles still created chances to score. Coley missed a great chance when he outpaced defenders but placed his low shot wide of the keeper and the far post. Sam Gittings also had a good chance but his attempt to lop the ball over the keeper contained insufficient height..
Standon missed a great chance when the ball was blazed high over the Eagles crossbar when facing an open goal after Michael Deacon had failed to cut out a low cross into the penalty area. Play went from end to end. Gittings blazed over the Standon cross bar when well placed and soon after Standon got an equalising goal following a goalmouth scramble when shots were blocked by Eagles defenders and keeper Goad before the ball ran loose to an unmarked forward who made no mistake from a few yards out.. As the players turned back to the centre circle Eagles’ Michael Deacon was sent off for an off the ball incident, and from then Eagles had to defend for a draw.
Goad made a series of good saves to deny Standon a third goal and as the home side tired Eagles finished stronger without creating any clear cut scoring chances.
