AUBREY CUP 2ND ROUND
Eagles struggled to break the resistance of a Lemsford side propping up the bottom of the HSCL premier division table for the first quarter of an hour but by half time had secured a comfortable win to progress to the next round and complete a twelth successive win.
Neither side created any goal scoring chances in the early exchanges despite eagles having most of the possession, but they went ahead after 20 minutes with a penalty by Carl Williams after Paul Morris was barged over by the keeper in the penalty area.. Shortly after a cross cum shot from David Locke hit the Lemsford crossbar and rebounded into play, and on the half hour Dami Fajiobi was put clear by Charlie Thake only for this close range shot to be blocked by the keeper for a corner.
Shortly after Eagles went further ahead with a goal from Mitch Cox who cut in from the right and placed the ball low into the corner of the net. Paul Morris made it 3 a couple of minutes later with a low shot from 8 yards which seemed to go through the Lemsford keeper. By that time Lemsford had hardly troubled home keeper Dan Goad, but after 40 minutes he had to make a great save to tip a header over the bar, and from the resulting corner Lemsford scored with a close range header at the far post after Eagles defenders went missing. Play switched to the other end and Cox netted from fully 30 yards out into an open goal, only for the attempt to be ruled out for a foul on the keeper by John Coley.
After half time leading scorer Sam Gittings came on to the field to replace a tiring Charlie Thake, having recovered from an ankle injury, and he was soon involved in play shooting just too high and wide of the far post from the edge of the penalty area when put clear on the left of the Lemsford rear guard.
Ricky Small made it 4-1 on 55 minutes with a well struck low shot from the edge of the penalty area after surging through the retreating Lemsford defence from midfield. Lemsford offered limited resistance but Goad had to make a point blank save from an unmarked Lemsford striker near the penalty spot when eagles again failed to clear a corner. They also hit a post with a shot from just inside the penalty area.
After 70 minutes sub Freddie Bogie raced clear of the Lemsford defence and was brought down in the penalty area. Carl Williams tucked away the penalty with a low shot into the corner of the net. Eagles continued to threaten another goal, with Bogie missing a couple of good chances and Gittings putting the ball just wide of goal from a Cox direct free kick, but the final score stayed at 5-1.
