HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
The Eagles run of unbeaten games since the end of August 2014 was brought to an end by Bovingdon in a thrilling end to end game in the second half at Pixmore. Eagles managed to get 2 goals ahead but defensive frailty after the loss of Paul McGennity through injury after 20 minutes was their undoing and a fast and direct Bovingdon side scored three excellent goals all in the last half hour to win the game.
Letchworth were ahead after only a couple of minutes when veteran striker John Coley tapped in a cross from Dami Fajiobi from a few yards out. Bovingdon failed to make any impression and it was not until 20 minutes before they created a decent chance, with the visitors beating the off side trap but the ball was blazed high and wide from a tight angle with only Eagles keeper Dan Goad to beat. They missed another when a cross was missed completely with an air kick
Eagles failed to create any chances in the final third despite good approach play and were made to pay with two quick goals after the half hour. First Eagles defenders left a man unmarked near the penalty spot and he scored easily with a low shot into the corner, and then a long ball was chased down the pitch towards the Eagles goal. Goad rushed well out of his area but the ball was placed past him low into the corner of the net from 25 yards eluding the frantic efforts of 2 chasing Eagles defenders to clear off the line.
Bovingdon almost got another before half time . In a similar move to the second goal a long ball down the right side of the pitch beat slow footed defenders and this time the ball rolled just wide of Goad’s far post. Keeper Goad then had to make a good blocking save from a shot inside a crowded penalty area as the visitors pushed for a third goal. Eagles finished the first half lucky to survive with a chance of victory in the second half.
However, within 10 minutes they went level after a free kick by Anthony Geary and shot was beaten out by the keeper to Fajiobi who scored through a crowd of players in the area.. A few minutes later he got a second goal heading in another free kick from Geary.
Eagles were then buzzing and got a fourth a few minutes later following a corner. A shot by Sam Williams was cleared off the Bovingdon line by a covering defender but the goal was awarded by the assistant referee. Eagles seemed to be cruising to victory but in the last 15 minutes were rocked by 3 goals. First a low shot from 20 yards found the bottom corner of the net with keeper Goad possibly unsighted by players in front of him, and then with Bovingdon committing extra players to go forward it was 4-4 with a low shot from inside the penalty area after Eagles defenders were beaten for speed, and almost on time Bovingdon got the winner with another well taken goal. Eagles in vain claimed a penalty when Sam Gittings went down in the area late on, but it was not to be their day.
