HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Eagles finished January in fine style in a hard fought, incident packed, game at Bushey after being behind for much of the match.
Bushey went ahead after only 10 minutes with a spectacular volley from fully 30 yards out, which dipped and swerved at the last minute in a strong wind to take the ball away from the despairing leap of Eagles keeper Dan Goad and into the top corner of the net. Up to that point play had been even with neither side posing a threat to the opposition keeper.
Eagles pushed forward and 5 minutes later leading scorer Sam Gittings hit the crossbar from 15 yards out. An unmarked Gittings then headed the resulting corner from Mitch Cox into the roof of the net from a few yards out. More chances for the Eagles came and went. Shane Carthy hit a cross from Anthony Geary just wide and then Gearing was put through clear on goal by a pass from Carthy but his angled shot was smothered by the keeper at the foot of his near post.
Then good work from Ricky Small on the left left striker John Coley with a gaping goal on the right side of the penalty area but he went for power and blasted the ball high over the crossbar. He did get the ball in the net shortly after but was judged to be offside. Den Crook then headed into the keepers arms from another pin point Cox corner, and on 35 minutes Gittings had a great chance to put the Eagles ahead when a pass from Demi Fajiobi put him clear of defenders on the edge of the Bushey penalty, but his attempt to lob the advancing keeper failed as the ball lacked sufficient height and was easily gathered..
Bushey made the odd counter attack with long balls down the centre, but posed little threat until almost on the stroke of half time a short corner was played back into the centre of the field and a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected by a defender wide of keeper Goad, giving him no chance.
In the second half Eagles pressed but failed to create any decent chances as Bushey tired . At one point the ball trickled agonising along the Bushey goal line and Den Crook hampered by 2 defenders was unable to make contact and force it home. Shortly after Eagles hit a post and the Bushey goal seemed to live a charmed life.
After 75 minutes the pressure finally yielded results with a superb goal from Carthy who ran through a group of Bushey defenders and shot low under the keeper into the net from 10 yards.. He almost repeated the goal a few minutes later but this time decided to pass rather than shoot and the chance was lost.
On 80 minutes the Eagles finally got a third goal after Gittings came off and Dami Fajiobi was pushed forward in a striking role His speed down the centre caused real problems for Bushey defenders and he scored with a low shot from 12 yards past the advancing keeper. By then Bushey were only offering token resistance as they tired, and Eagles mounted a series of attacks. Fajiobi almost got a second with another run down the centre of the field but this time shot wide of goal and then Small shot into the body of the keeper from a few yards out. Fajiobi was causing havoc with his speed and was unlucky not to score from another dash down the centre, the keeper just managing to deflect the ball wide of a post. Crook then headed in the corner from Cox to make the final score 4-2 in the final minutes.
