ANAGRAM RECORDS TROPHY QUARTER FINAL
Eagles maintained their recent form in cup competitions with a win against Herts Senior County League rivals Wormley in a scrappy and largely uninspiring game which Eagles dominated.
After only a couple of minutes Sam Williams should have put Eagles ahead with a low shot from inside the penalty area after he was found by a neat cross by Mitchell Cox, only to place his shot a foot wide of the goal.. Sam Gittings almost got a goal after 15 minutes when he broke clear on the left but his low shot was well saved by the keeper’s feet.. Eagles enjoyed a succession of corners with no end product although from another Cox corner a John Coley overhead kick only just cleared the crossbar. Another Cox cross fell just in front of an on rushing Gittings just a few yards from goal but his outstretched foot could only push the ball high over the crossbar..
Finally on the half hour Eagles got the break through they needed when Gittings beat several defenders, but had his shot beaten out to Shane Carthy, whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected into the far corner of the net with the keeper leaden footed.
Wormley finally responded with a shot that whistled over the over the cross bar from 20 yards but Eagles kept pressing forward. A Coley shot from the edge of the penalty area went straight to the keeper and then Paul Morris had a shot deflected forcing the keeper to dive to the left to collect the ball..Almost on the stroke of half time eagles went further ahead. Carl Williams danced through a static Wormley defence and passed the ball to Cox whose low shot flew into the net from a few yards out.
After half time play became increasingly scrappy as Eagles lost their rythmn and Wormley barely managed to get out of their own half for the first half hour. On 50 minutes Gittings charged down a poor Wormley free kick and shot for the top corner of the net, which was well saved by the keeper. Another goal chance had to wait until 70 minutes when a low shot from Morris was pushed away by the keeper and there was no Letchworth player following up to put it into the net before defenders cleared the danger.. A cross from Michael Deacon was met by Carl Williams but his shot was parried by the keeper and the ball bobbled around the Wormleiy penalty area and was cleared off the goal line before being finally hacked clear.
Then on 80 minutes Eagles scored a goal out of nowhere when a Cox shot from 20 yards out went into the bottom corner of the net, the keeper making no effort to save thinking the ball was going wide of a post.. Sub Krystian Malachak then had a shot well saved by the Wormley keeper, tipping the ball on to the far post and out of play for a corner..
Wormley then scored a consolation goal when a low cross was well met from near the penalty spot. Eagles keeper Dan Goad made a great save to parry the ball but he had no chance to save the rebound which fell luckily back to the Wormley forward who made no mistake blasting the ball into the back of the Eagles net.
Mitchell Cox tried hard for a hat trick and in the final minutes tricked his way through a group of Wormley defenders only to shoot just over the cross bar.
