HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles remain unbeaten away from home this season in all competitions with a well disciplined and attractive performance against a stubborn Wormley side.
They almost got away to a dream start in the opening minutes when John Coley broke free of the Wormley defence and his low shot forced a diving save from the Wormley keeper to push the ball wide of his near post, but after 10 minutes they were ahead when Sam Gittings picked up a fine pass by Paul McGennity to shoot low and hard across the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net from 15 yards. Carl Williams then scuffed his shot when he had a clear sight of goal and on the half hour a low shot from Coley hit the foot of the post of the Wormley goal before spinning clear. The ball was returned into a crowded goal area but no Eagles player could put the ball in the net through a crowd of Wormley defenders.
Wormley counter attacked and Eagles keeper Dan Goad had to quickly block the ball at the foot of his post from a shot a couple of yards out. Wormley pressed and a low cross fizzed across the Eagles penalty area. It hit an Eagles defender and was deflected towards goal, but a wrong footed Goad somehow managed to grab the ball on the goal line. Wormley should have scored minutes later when a long ball down the centre saw Eagles defenders outpaced, but the final shot was well wide of the goal. Wormley were enjoying the best of the game for the last 20 minutes of the first half.
Just before half time a Mitch Cox direct free kick from a few yards outside the penalty area was deflected on to the Wormley crossbar . The ball was not cleared and the keeper had to make a great save from Den Crook. From the resulting corner Crook headed into the top corner of the net from close range, but was judged to have fouled an opponent so the goal was disallowed.
Eagles came out second half looking for a second goal to kill the game. On 50 minutes a Cox cross was volleyed just wide of post and crossbar by Crook and a few minutes later Shane Carthy broke through the Wormley midfield to send a low shot from outside the penalty area just wide of the Wormley post. The keeper then palmed away another shot from Carthy. Play swung from end to end. Goad had to make a smart save to keep out a shot from close to the penalty spot and then the Wormley keeper parried a shot from Coley into the path of an onrushing Sam Williams who ballooned the ball over the home cross bar.
Goad had to make another excellent save before on 75 minutes Eagles got the goal they deserved when Gittings was played through the centre of the home defence by Coley, outpaced defenders and coolly placed the ball wide of the keeper from 12 yards . Gittings almost returned the favour to Coley, who blasted the ball just over the crossbar. After 85 minutes Coley finally scored after receiving a pass from Mc Gennity, and shot low into the corner of the net from 8 yards giving the Wormley keeper no chance.
