HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Having beaten the opposition 6-0 on their own ground last Saturday Eagles punished them with another 6 goals before half time, before taking the foot off the gas and running out 7-0 winners.
Wooden spoonists Lemsford hardly ventured into the Eagles half in the first period leaving keeper Goad a virtual spectator. Eagles almost got the first goal after 10 minutes when a low shot from Shane Carthy was deflected towards the net by Dami Fajobi but it did not have enough power and the visitors keeper managed to save the ball from going into the net. A low shot from Den Crook from 25 yards was too close to the keeper who made a comfortable save but eventually the deadlock was broken when a long clearance by the Eagles defence and a slick passing movement found Fajobi clear on goal and he made no mistake from a few yards out. Within minutes it was 2 -0 when Sam Gittings chased a pass down the centre, outpaced Lemsford defenders and cleanly shot wide of the keeper from near the penalty spot. Fajobi scored his second from 10 yards with Eagles in full control. A Paul McGennity header from a Mitch Cox free kick flashed over the crossbar but after 40 minutes Mitch Cox found the net with a glancing header into the bottom corner of the net. In the next 5 minutes Eagles scored another 2 goals as the Lemsford defence collapsed, the first from Gittings who picked up a rebound off the post from a Cox direct free kick, and then Den Crook smashed in a shot from the edge of the Lemsford penalty area. Fajobi almost got his hat trick before half time when he headed just wide of a post.
After half time Eagles had scoring opportunities but were limited to a single goal. After 50 minutes Lemsford almost scored when a mistake by David Locke let in his opponent with a clear shot on goal, but he hesitated and his shot was easily saved by eagles substitute keeper James Gilbert.. Gittings should have scored from a few yards out but hit the ball into the body of a defender, but earned the next goal for the eagles after being fouled. The free kick from 30 yards out was hit with considerable power by Crook and flew into the net.
On 70 minutes Gilbert had to make a fine flying save to tip the ball round his post from a shot from the edge of the penalty area after Eagles failed to properly clear a corner .
Cox almost got his second from 8 yards after a close passing movement with Gittings but hit the ball too close to the keeper, and then Gittings was put clear on goal, but his shot was deflected wide by the keeper’s legs. The visitors had another let off when in the dying minutes their keeper made a great save to deflect the ball over the crossbar.
