HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite enjoying the most possession Eagles were unable to convert this into goals, and for the second successive week could only achieve a home draw.
For the first 20 minutes neither side created any goal scoring opportunities but after 25 minutes Buntingford No 10 had great chance but blazed his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. Eagles failed to impress in the final third of the pitch but on the half hour Paul Morris beat several defenders with a jinking run, crossed from the left and the header from Charlie Thake towards the top corner of the net was comfortably caught by Buntingford keeper Sam Chester. The keeper then well saved a shot from Sam Gittings from the edge of the visitors’ penalty area.
After 40 minutes a Jamie Platt shot from the edge of the penalty area was too close to the keeper and then Chester pushed wide of a post a shot from Gittings. Eagles finished strongly but at half time the score remained 0-0.
Within 10 minutes of the start of the second half the visitors went ahead with a freak goal. An attempted cross from the right touchline sailed over Eagles keeper Dan Eely, hit his far post and bounced into the opposite corner of the eagles net. Eagles responded but their ill luck continued when a shot from Shane Carthy was heading towards the Buntingford net when it hit Adam Furness on the back and trickled into the net. Furness was standing in an offside position and the goal was disallowed. Eagles continued to press for the equaliser. A Gittings shot from edge of the penalty area whistled just over the crossbar. Buntingford relied on breakaways and their no 10 should have done better with a clear sight of goal, he blasted the ball wide of the post from the edge of the penalty area. Eely then had to make a good stop to save a low shot from distance.
After 80 minutes Eagles finally got their reward for their hard work. Carthy was fouled near the edge of the visitors’ penalty area and Den crook lifted the direct free kick over the defensive wall and into the corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance. Eagles pressed for the winning goal and a Platt shot was heading for the top corner of the net before being deflected by a defender for a corner.. Then a long ball down the centre was chased by sub Joshua Coley, who crossed low into the path of Gary Christie whose low shot was parried by the keeper. Christie had another shot from the edge of the penalty area which was deflected, and from the resulting corner there was a goalmouth scramble a few yards from the goal line when no Eagles player could force the ball into the net.
The game finished with honours even and once more the Eagles had been unable to benefit from home advantage.
