HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Eagles failed to take their chances and were frustrated by some excellent shot stopping by the Wormley keeper. Dan Goad was equally impressive and so goals were few and far apart.
Both sides failed to create any meaningful chances in the first 15 minutes but Wormley almost struck first when Goad had to make a good save to push the ball round a post from a shot near the penalty spot. Almost immediately Eagles star striker from last season Sam Gittings broke through the Wormley defence but his well struck shot deflected off a defender over the crossbar . From the resulting corner the ball was worked into the centre of the penalty area. The keeper beat out a shot straight to Ricky Small who bundled the ball into the net from a few yards out.
After 25 minutes Wormley felt that they should have had a penalty when a long ball was chased down the centre and the Wormley man was bundled over by Paul Mc Gennity.. The fall was exaggerated and the referee Dave Chapman clearly felt that too much had been made of the contact between the players.
Play was swinging from end to end. Goad had to make another flying save to parry a shot from inside the Eagles penalty area and Wormley made another unheeded frenzied penalty appeal when a Wormley player fell in the Eagles penalty area under pressure from several Eagles defenders.
Eagles Charlie Thake always looked dangerous near goal and had a shot parried by the keeper from 8 yards without another Eagles player being able to force home the rebound. He then crossed the ball to an unmarked Gittings whose header from 8 yards hit the crossbar and flew to safety
After half time the game ebbed and flowed as the two teams enjoyed good and bad periods. Thake had another chance soon after half time when a shot was beaten away by the keeper after he had walked round several defenders near the goal line and then he had a great opportunity to put the game beyond the reach of the visitors. A ball over the top of the defenders left him with a clear run on goal but his shot was too close to the advancing keeper who managed to parry the ball away, and the best chance of the match was lost.
Wormley then enjoyed a period of dominance and Goad had to make another great save to preserve the score at 1-0. Thake had a point blank shot saved by the keeper and clearly it was not to be his day. After 80 minutes Wormley drew level when debutant Eagles defender Ian Thorne tussled with an opponent in the corner of the eagles penalty area. As he fell he handled the ball on the round and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty, which was cleanly dispatched into the corner of the Eagles net.
Eagles pressed for the winner and substitute Gary Christie twice went close . First his low shot was pushed round the foot of the post by the keeper and from the resulting corner a whipped header from the near post flashed across the goal narrowly missing the top corner of the net at the far post. Minutes from the end from a pass by Christie, young Joshua Coley had a clear sight of goal from just inside the Wormley penalty area, but he opted to go for power and he blasted the ball over the top corner of the net.
