HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Eagles made hard work beating a poor opposition in a game they so nearly lost, despite dominating the game.
Eagles went behind in virtually the first attack by the home side when Ian Thorne was judged to have fouled his opponent just inside the eagles penalty area, and the penalty was tucked away to give stand in keeper Paul McGennity no chance.
Eagles looked all at sea in defence but strong going forward. Den Crook headed a cross by Joe Humphries just over the crossbar and Shaun Williams first headed the ball straight at the keeper from close range and then failed to scuff the rebound into the net before it was cleared by covering defenders. The Old Parmiterians keeper had to make a good save from a shot by Lee Pateman and was relieved to see a low shot from Humphries fizz just wide of the goal as Eagles piled on the pressure.
There was a lengthy delay in the game on the half hour when Mitch Cox fell awkwardly after a clumsy challenge and broke his tibula. . Eagles had to reorganise but the introduction of young Josh Coley seemed to revitalise them as first Gary Christie and then Pateman failed to take good chances when put clear on goal. Shane Carthy was unlucky to see a surging run through the home defence finish with a low shot from inside the penalty area flash just wide of a post, and soon after repeated the attempt. Eagles seemed unable to get the final decisive touch but just before half time Christie hammered the ball into the back of the net from near the penalty spot when the defence failed to clear a free kick from Crook.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Eagles showed their intentions when first Coley intercepted the ball and shot just wide from 20 yards and then Paul Morris beat a succession of defenders only to shoot well wide. Jamie Farrar then headed a Coley corner against the crossbar as Eagles turned on the pressure, but then in a swift break out from defence suddenly Old Parmiterians went ahead for the second time when Thorne slipped to let in his opponent who scored easily from 10 yards.. The lead lasted barely a couple of minutes before under pressure from Christie who was about to shoot for goal, a desperate clearance by a defender rocketed into the home net.
Sub Carl Williams created an immediate impression after coming on after an hour when he dribbled into the penalty area and was flattened by a defender. Den Crook smashed the penalty into the corner of the net to put Eagles ahead for the first time. Old Parmiterians tried to respond but keeper McGennity was able to comfortably to deal with a couple of shots on goal. The home keeper in contrast was in constant action and after parrying a shot from Shaun Williams from 8 yards he went down low to save a shot from Carl Williams.
In the last few minutes Morris wriggled clear of a clutch of defenders but was hauled down in the penalty area. Carl Williams hit the penalty low towards the corner of the net but the home keeper made an excellent save to turn the ball round his post. Eagles should have won by a bigger margin but in the end were relieved to come away with all 3 points.
