HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
After going behind early in the game the Eagles dominated possession in the first half but were unable to get the better of a strong Bovingdon side until the latter part of the game.
The first 20 minutes contained little incident as both sides battled for midfield dominance and Eagles first attempt on goal did not arrive until after that time when a low shot from Anthony Geary from the edge of the Bovingdon penalty area was straight at the home keeper. Eagles goal had a few scares but generally there were few chances created when a goal for the home side came out of the blue on the half hour. Eagles defenders failed to close down Bovingdon and from almost 25 yards a low shot found the corner of the Eagles net with keeper Dan Goad partially unsighted by a Bovingdon forward.
Bovingdon threatened to get a second a few minutes later when they earned a free kick on the edge of the Eagles penalty area near the goal line . The ball was not cleared and after a scramble in the penalty area it was eventually was headed over the Eagles crossbar. Eagles threatened in patches but Bovingdon were quicker to the ball and to close down Eagles players. After 40 minutes a shot by Shane Carthy took a deflection off a defender but the keeper made a great save to push the ball away. At the other end Goad had to make a fine save to stop a header sneaking into the bottom corner of his net and to turn it round his post.
After 50 minutes eagles thought they had a penalty when the referee awarded the kick after a foul just inside the home penalty area, but after consulting his assistant referee he then reversed his decision.
Eagles keeper was soon in action again and conceded a corner after trying to keep the ball in play. The corner was headed towards the Eagles goal but cleared from under the crossbar by Jamie Farrar with keeper Goad beaten. He then had to save a close range shot after fumbling a cross from the right.. These were testing times for the Eagles, and after 60 minutes Bovingdon should have scored but a low shot from the right side of the penalty area passed just wide of Goad’s far post.
After 2 substitutions Eagles starting tp play some real flowing football. Shane Carthy shot wide of bar and post from outside the penalty area and sub Dami Fajobi broke clear down the centre only to toe end his shot wide of the advancing keeper and the goal.
Eagles finally got the goal they deserved on 80 minutes scored by sub gary Christie from 8 yards after his earlier shot and an effort by Carthy were charged down.. Eagles now had their tales up. Fajobi narrowly failed to get his head to a cross from Christie and in the dying minutes got the winner. A shot by Christie was beaten out by the keeper, crossed back into the goal area and tapped home by Fajobi.
