HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
After once again going behind in the early minutes Eagles recovered their winning form and in a strong second half performance, comfortably beating the visitors Evergreen. But for some excellent goal keeping and poor finishing it could have been double figures.
Evergreen scored a fortunate goal after just 5 minutes when a low shot that Eagles keeper Dan Goad had covered was deflected into the net by a covering defender. It took less than 10 minutes for eagles to level the score, when Evergreen failed to clear their lines and Josh Coley fired a low shot into the corner of the net off a defender.
A foul on Dami Fajobi near the edge of the Evergreen penalty area set up a chance but Carl Williams free kick was headed wide by an unmarked Fajobi. Eagles almost got caught out by a lightening break down the centre by the visitors but a chasing Jamie Farrar just managed to put off the Evergreen striker who shot just wide. Eagles pressed without creating any clear cut chances before Williams curled a direct free kick just wide of post and cross bar and then Fajobi was put clear with only the keeper to beat and placed his low shot too close to his diving body, blocking the shot.
After half time Williams thought he had scored from close in after picking up a flick from Fajobi, but he was judged to have been in an offside position. Ricky Small was unlucky not to score from another Williams free kick but his off balance lunge at the ball sent it well over the crossbar. Shane Carthy ploughed down the centre of the field and through the Evergreen defence but blasted the ball wide of post and crossbar.
The goal finally came for the Eagles from another free kick for a foul on Carthy, which was neatly headed home from 6 yards by sub Charlie Thake. Within minutes the same player headed his second from a Coley corner and his third from a cross by Farrar. 3 goals in 10 minutes destroyed Evergreen and as Eagles surged forward looking for more goals in the last 15 minutes it could have been double figures. A long ball down the centre from Den Crook found Sam Gittings, who sprinted clear of a covering defender and easily beat the keeper with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Thake could have got at least 2 more goals. He was put clear on goal by a pass from Gittings but his low shot was too close to the keeper who made a god blocking save, and a second shot was cleared off the goal line by a covering defender.. The keeper had to make another good diving save to deflect wide a shot from Carthy after a twisting run by Iggy Thorne and in the dying minutes that man Thake was again on hand to score, but once more his initial shot was parried by the keeper and the rebound hacked off the goal line by a defender.
In the end an easy victory for the Eagles but only after a strong second half surge.
