Eagles recent run of good results came to an end when a weakened side failed to take its chances in the first half, and lost to a hard working Buntingford team who showed a greater will to win.
Play swung from end to end in the early stages with Buntingford fortunate not to concede a goal as a header from Charlie Thake was headed off the goal line by a defender with the keeper beaten and Charlie Black hit the side netting from a couple of yards out when he made contact with a corner from Josh Coley at the far post. Buntingford also had their chances and with Eagles keeper Dan Goad slow to react and come out of goal to collect the ball a low cross fizzed across the goal area with an onrushing forward just unable to get the final touch to push the ball into the Eagles net.
Eagles should have gone ahead on 25 minutes when an exquisite pass by Coley put Thake clear on goal with only keeper Sam Chester to beat. His low shot was on target but Chester made a great stop low to his right to push the ball wide. Shortly after Coley himself was clear on goal from a pass by Black but his powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area whistled just past a post.
Eagles keeper Goad then had to make a great save when a free kick was not cleared and a shot from 6 yards looked to be a certain goal. Buntingford applied pressure in the final 10 minutes of the half with a corner headed just over the cross bar and then a free kick hit a wall of defenders and the rebound was deflected over the Eagles cross bar by an Eagles defender. Eagles conceded a succession of free kicks and corners but managed to defend their goal successfully until half time.
Buntingford finally broke the deadlock after 63 minutes when the Eagles defence failed to clear a right wing cross and the ball was hammered into the net from near the penalty spot. It was followed by a second goal a few minutes later, when a low hard shot from the right side of the penalty area beat Goad into the bottom corner of the net.
Eagles struggled to find some rhythm but created few clear scoring chances, and when they did the home keeper tipped over the cross bar a header from Jamie Farrar. In the final minutes Buntingford made the game safe when a huge throw in from the right touchline landed near the penalty spot and was neatly headed into the bottom corner of the Eagles net.
