HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite having the bulk of possession throughout the game the Eagles were unable to convert their superiority into a goal feast as they cruised to a 2-0 victory over a weak Hatfield side.
Eagles started brightly and threatened to over run the visitors in the first half hour. Shane Carthy was unlucky when he had 2 goal bound shots charged down by defenders, and Sam Gittings was a constant threat throughout the first half. He hammered one shot into the side netting, just failed to connect with a cross from Jamie Farrar that the keeper managed to scramble away for a corner, , and then had a low shot well saved by the keeper. He later managed to get clear on goal but his shot from 10 yards thundered against a post and back into play. He did get a chance to score when Eagles were awarded penalty after 30 minutes for a foul just inside the penalty area, but his low shot was too close to the keeper who saved with his legs.
Eagles finally got their noses ahead when Carthy scored with a belter into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out, and eagles went into half time with a narrow lead that so easily could have been three goals.
After the break a Gittings shot was parried into the path of Farrar who pushed the ball into an open net from a few yards out, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Hatfield tried to counter on the break and Eagles keeper Dan Goad was forced to rush from his goal to collect the ball from the onrushing forward on the edge of his penalty area at the second attempt. Another quick break down the left put Hatfield clear but the delicate chip shot over the head of the advancing Goad went just wide of his far post.
15 minutes from the end the Hatfield keeper saved a shot by Carl Williams and the ball ran into space occupied by sub Ricky Young who thumped the ball into an open net from few yards out. Eagles pushed for more goals and Farrar shot straight at the keeper when put clear by a pass from Young, and soon after he headed over a cross from Young after good work by Josh Coley. Young himself shot wide of a post when well placed to score and in the final minutes an exquisite pass inside a Hatfield defender by Josh Coley to his dad John Coley was volleyed just wide of the post from 12 yards.
