HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
After going in at half time with a comfortable 3 goal lead against a poor Chipperfield side, Eagles let the game slip in the second half with some poor defending, and but for a great performance from keeper Dan Goad, could well have lost the match.
In the first half the visitors offered little threat, taking 20 minutes to muster a scuffed shot on goal that Eagles keeper Dan Goad easily collected . Eagles threatened without creating many chances but then Charlie Thake scored with a chipped shot from a Sam Gittings cross. Within a few minutes it was 2-0 when Thake headed in after Eagles piled on the pressure. Thake shot wide when well placed and Carl Williams shot straight at the keeper.
After 35 minutes it was 3-0 from a bad mistake by the young visiting keeper. He failed to hold on the ball from a cross and pushed the ball out straight to the feet of Thake who netted easily from 10 yards, completing his hat trick. Eagles had a scare just before half time when Jamie Farrar was outpaced by a ball down the centre and Goad had to race out of his goal to make a blocking save at the feet of the onrushing forward.
Thake soon got into his stride after half time and shot over when well placed. Goad then had to make a great double save at the other end to keep the Eagles goal intact. Eagles continued to press forward and Chipperfield employed the quick break and long ball to try and catch Eagles defenders too far upfield. Ricky Small was unlucky to have a header blocked and his overhead scissor kick go wide. John Coley forced a good save by the keeper after firing in a low shot from a cross by Joshua Coley, and Paul McGennity shot just wide of a post from the edge of the penalty area. Against the run of play Chipperfield suddenly got into the game when a low corner was pushed into his own net by MGennity
Eagles soon stormed back. Williams hit a post and when the ball was pushed back to him by Joshua Coley his fierce low shot found the back of the net. Eagles were aggrieved when Chipperfield responded with another goal soon after. John Coley looked as if he had been fouled deep into the visitor’s half, but no free kick was given and the ball was pumped downfield. There was a clear suspicion of offside but no whistle so the ball was taken round Goad and passed into an empty Eagles net by a grateful Chipperfield.Eagles had a real let off when a mix up between Small and Boyd let in an unmarked forward but he blazed the ball wide of an open goal. Relief was shortlived when in the last 5 minutes a free kick was deflected into the Eagles goal from close range. Goad then made a great arching save to tip the ball over his crossbar as Eagles hung on for their victory.
