HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite hitting the cross bar twice in the first half Eagles were unable to beat league leaders Standon in an entertaining mid week game. Eagles played better than at any time since Christmas but the Standon keeper was in good form and his goal led a charmed life. In contrast Eagles keeper Bradley Gillham had very little to do other than clear crosses and corners.
Neither side created any scoring chances in the first 15 minutes although Carl Williams playing up front had a good chance near the post but the keeper was able to collect his shot which lacked any power. Standon counter attacked and eagles were lucky to escape when a cross from the right was headed down and just over the Eagles crossbar from a few yards out.
Eagles first real chance came when Iggy Thorne burst through the Standon defence and having left several defenders in his wake lofted the ball over the keeper but on to the cross bar and over. Den Crook then hit the crossbar with a shot from 15 yards that had beaten the Standon keeper, so both sides went in goal less at half time.
Soon after the restart Jamie Farrar managed to head the ball clear of the eagles goal line when the ball was lofted over Gillham from a tight angle but play swung from end to end. Shane Carthy had a shot deflected wide of the goal by a defender and the Standon keeper pushed away a low shot from Crook at the foot of his post. The keeper let a cross from Sam Gittings spill through his hands just wide of a post for a corner, but he then caught a shot from Williams at full stretch.
Farrar slipped to let in his opponent for a clear shot on goal but the shot went wide. Standon applied the pressure and a direct free kick was headed just over the Eagles crossbar. Gittings was unlucky not to connect with a low cross from Crook a yard in front of the goal line but a covering defender managed to deflect the ball just away from his lunging boot. Eagles nearly won with what would have been the gift of the season when the Standon keeper was slow to clear his lines and his clearance cannoned into an onrushing Williams and the ball rebounded a yard wide of the post.
Eagles felt that they had done enough to win the game and now have to overcome another top 3 team Hadley and Wingate this coming Saturday.
