HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite a strong second half performance Eagles were unable to overcome a 2-0 half time deficit to beat a strong Lions outfit, who have won every league game this season.
For the first 30 minutes honours were even as both sides tried to break down their opposition defence without troubling either keeper. Letchworth’s Jamie Farrar chased a ball down the centre but lacked sufficient speed to reach the ball before the keeper, who collected the ball off his toe, and then Eagles had a real let off when the ball came back off a defender to an unmarked Lions forward who shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. As the game went on both sides had half chances including a good chance for Sam Gittings who shot wide of the post. Lions then suddenly delivered a double whammy 5 minutes before half time. First Liam Huckle was beaten for speed down the right flank by Josh Kennet who then cut inside and easily beat Paul McGennity from 12 yards with Eagles defence caught upfield. He repeated the goal minutes later with another rapid run down the right flank before beating 3 covering defenders on the edge of the penalty area. This time Ricky Small got in blocking tackle but only diverted the ball past his own keeper into the corner of the net.
Second half Eagles tried to apply the pressure but were caught on the break on several occasions. McGennity made a great save with his feet and repeated the save a few minutes later, with Eagles pinned back on the ropes after an injury to Small depleted their defensive ranks. Eagles gradually improved and sub Hunter Diack rattled the crossbar with a header from 8 yards out after the keeper did well to save from Carl Williams from a few yards range. Gittings shot wide after being put clear on goal down the centre and then his cross was headed narrowly over his own crossbar by a covering defender.
Eagles finally got their reward for constant pressure when Ryan Ellis comfortably scored from a penalty after a handball in the Lions penalty area about 10 minutes from time. Play then switched from end to end and a free kick by Lions 20 yards from the Eagles goal rattled the home crossbar. The visitors spurned a couple more good chances, and Eagles failed to get a last minute equaliser.
