HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles hit the jackpot with Charlie Thake scoring a hat trick against a poor Hatfield side.
Social made much of the early running but eagles went ahead after 10 minutes after a foul on Carl Williams. He took the free kick himself and from fully 25 yards floated the ball over the top of the defensive wall and into the top corner of the net. Thake nearly added to the score a few minutes later when a snap shot from a similar distance passed just wide of a post with the keeper beaten. He then shot into the side netting after a quick free kick was taken by Sam Gittings, and headed just wide another direct free kick by Williams.
Eagles piled on the pressure and Iggy Thorne dribbled along the goal line leaving defenders in his wake, but his low cross failed to find an Eagles player in the goal area. Then his shot from almost 30 yards whistled over the cross bar as confidence levels of the Eagles rose, and the second goal finally came with a tap in by Sam Day from near the penalty spot.
Eagles had a scare when keeper Paul McGennity was unable to cleanly collect a high cross into his goal area, and a close range was hacked off the Eagles goal line by Jamie Platt. But Eagles soon got goal number 3 when Gittings scored an excellent goal from a tight angle inside the penalty area squeezing the ball between the keeper and his near post. The Hatfield keeper then made a fine save to tip a rasping shot from Thake over the cross bar, but Thake finally got the goal he deserved . Taking a pass from Thorne, he dug the ball out from under his feet and thumped the ball home from 10 yards. He added a second just before half time with a gentle chip over the head of the keeper.
Eagles lost little time in the second half adding to their score when Thake broke through the Hatfield defence, gently lobbed the ball over the head of the keeper and bundled the ball into the net as a covering defender tried to clear, completing his hat trick.
Day scored his second goal after a good passing movement with Gittings, but after Eagles introduced all their subs their efforts faltered. Sub Konstantinos Tragoustis scored with a toe punt into the net to complete the scoring but both sides could have scored more goals in the last quarter of the game. Eagles McGennity made a great save to tip over a shot from 20 yards and Thorne headed a shot from a corner kick off the goal line by a post. Williams was put clear on goal by a pass from sub Gary Christie but opted for power and blasted the ball just over the cross bar from 10 yards. Play swung to the other end and McGennity had to arch backwards to tip over a cross cum shot from close to the right touchline. Gittings had a good chance to score from the edge of the penalty area but his attempt to chip the keeper did not carry enough height and the score remained unchanged at the final whistle.
