GREG CUP FINAL HSCL
Eagles reserves were unlucky to lose a hard fought cup final against well organised and physical opposition, after a controversial refereeing decision on the stroke of half time.
Eagles enjoyed good possession during the first 10 minutes but were then undone by a fast break down the centre and a chip shot over the head of the advancing keeper Luke Mole into the top of the Eagles net. Soon after another quick break by Lings Elite a goal was only prevented when Mole deflected the goal bound shot over his cross bar with his feet.
After 20 minutes Eagles drew level when a corner was not cleared and under pressure from Louis Hau the ball was pushed into the back of his own net by a Lings Elite defender. Hau then chased a ball down the centre outpacing defenders but his chip shot over the keeper just cleared the cross bar. Following an Eagles move down the right flank a shot was deflected wide by a defender and the following corner was cleared only as far as Luke Shimell, who volleyed the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area, only for the half time whistle to blow as the ball left his foot. The goal disallowed despite strong protests from Eagles players.
Lings Elite went ahead early in the second half when a cross into the Eagles goal area was pushed by Mole into the path of an unmarked opponent who netted easily from near the penalty spot. Play then swung from end to end, and when a direct free kick was not cleared fully by the Eagles defence a shot from outside the penalty area skimmed the Eagles cross bar, with Eagles then breaking quickly down the left and the Lings Elite keeper made a great save to turn the ball over his cross bar after the shot took a deflection off a defender.
Another freekick was not cleared by the Eagles defence and the shot fizzed just over the Eagles cross bar, then Archie Wilkinson made a great run and his low cross into the opposition goal area was missed by both covering defenders and Eagles players.
Eagles pressed hard in the last 10 minutes but were unable to create any further goal scoring chances, and Mole had to make a good save to tip over a cross cum shot in the final minutes.
