HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Eagles could easily have run out winners but wasted a series of excellent goal scoring chances, hitting the goal frames several times, before losing to a very physical Ware side.
Things started badly for Letchworth when they went behind to a goal in the first five minutes. Defenders failed to deal with a cross from the right and the Ware no 9 managed to hook the ball over his shoulder into the roof of the net from close range at the far post. Charlie Thake did manage to even the score after 15 minutes when he latched on to a ball over the Ware defence and hit a low shot into the corner of the net.
Ware relied on the long ball down the centre and wings but failed to score when two forwards were left clear on goal but the final shot went tamely wide. Sam Day missed a good chance for Eagles to head in a cross from close range and Sam Gittings back header hit a post and spun to safety. Jamie Farrar had to come to the rescue of the Eagles with a magnificent saving tackle after chasing back from the half way line and managing to take the ball over the toe of the Ware forward just as he shaped to shoot with only keeper Paul McGennity to beat. McGennity then had to make an excellent save with his feet from close range. Just before half time Eagles almost got their noses in front when Thake chased a long clearance down the centre and with only the keeper to beat decided to try a flick the ball with the outside of his boot into the empty net rather than go round the keeper, only for the ball to roll a yard wide of the post.
After half time Eagles created plenty of goal scoring chances. Lee Pateman was clear on goal with only the keeper to beat and acres of room but placed his shot from the edge of the penalty area too close to the keeper. Thake then latched on to a pass from Gittings and thundered a shot against the corner of post and crossbar from a few yards out when looking certain to score. A long high clearance from McGennity put both Day and Anthony Geary clear on goal, but Geary shot straight at the keeper from the edge of the penalty area. Thake beat the keeper in a race for the ball but chipped his shot just wide of the keeper and the far post from a narrow angle.
Ware relied on fast breakaway attacks and scored the winning goal half way through the second half with a such a move and low shot from near the penalty spot. They almost got another when a poor clearance from McGennity landed straight at the feet of a Ware player 25 yards out, but the Eagles keeper recovered to block the shot on goal. In the dying minutes Eagles almost got the goal their constant pressure deserved when Gary Christie was unable to force home a cross from the left and the ball trickled agonisingly past the far post.
