HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles completed their league programme for the current season with a comfortable victory over second placed Bovingdon, to finally finish with third place in the league table.
Eagles made a good start and Carl Williams soon hit the cross bar with a shot from the edge of the penalty area before Eagles were awarded a penalty for a high challenge on Sam Day. Charlie Thake blasted the ball high over the crossbar almost clearing a line of high trees at the back of the goal.
Eagles wobbled defensively at times, and a poor back pass by Michael Deacon fell short of keeper Paul McGennity, who had to make a good block to prevent an early Bovingdon goal. He then pushed over the cross bar a direct free kick from 20 yards. A goal seemed certain for the visitors as they hit the first the post and then the cross bar, between a great save from Mc Gennity in goal. Eagles counter attacked and Sam Gittings found Sam Day unmarked in the penalty area, for him to score with ease. Gittings then scored himself, before getting his second goal with his second attempt from 10 yards after his first effort was blocked by a defender having beaten the keeper. Bovingdon wasted a number of chances to score and by half time eagles were in a comfortable 3-0 lead.
It was 4-0 after an hour when Mitch Cox was put clear on the right by Williams and scored with a firm shot from 15 yards across the keeper into the corner of the net. Eagles relaxed and as Bovingdon pressed forward they created a number of missed chances. Thake had moved back into defence following an injury to Jamie Farrar, and conceded a direct free kick in a central position right on the edge of the eagles penalty area, but the attempt was straight into the Eagles defensive wall..
Eagles counter attacked and Cameron Omar made a run down almost the whole length of the pitch to cross into the centre, but Day shot wide. McGennity then had to make a great flying save to palm a shot wide but was finally beaten by another direct fee kick on the edge of Eagles penalty area, which was floated this time over the heads of the defenders in the wall and into the top corner of the net.
The remaining 10 minutes passed without further incident and Eagles secured victory over a side that has enjoyed an excellent season and come second in the league table.
