HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite a dream start Eagles failed to press home their advantage and after a poor second half performance were fortunate to come away with a point thanks to some poor finishing by Cuffley forwards.
Eagles went ahead in the first couple of minutes when Shane Carthy hammered in a shot from just outside the penalty area. Cuffley responded and almost got an equaliser soon after when there was panic in a packed Eagles goal area and keeper Paul McGennity had to make a reflex save with his feet to keep the ball out of the net from close range, before the ball was then hoofed off the line by a covering defender.
Neither side created many chances despite Eagles pressure although Carthy did blast a knock down by Charlie Thake high and wide when well placed. Shortly before half time Cuffley almost broke the deadlock when Iggy Thorne was beaten for pace and McGennity had to deflect the low shot wide of his near post with his feet.
After half time Thake had a great chance but headed a cross from Paul Morris just over the crossbar from 6 yards when in clear space. Play swung from end to end and McGennity had to make a clawing save high to his right to collect a shot from 15 yards. A direct free kick following a foul by Carthy was then headed just wide and on the hour the visitors finally got the goal they deserved with a low shot into the corner of the net.
Eagles responded and Michael Deacon almost managed to force the ball home from close range, but Cuffley got a second when a high cross cum shot from the left sailed over keeper McGennity and rebounded into the net off his far post.
Eagles equalised with another excellent strike by Carthy from outside the penalty area, taking a deflection off a defender after a dribbling run from Thake into the visitors penalty area. In the last 10 minutes Cuffley had the best of the chances to win the game but first a break down the centre left Eagles defence exposed, and despite a clear run on goal the shot was snatched a foot wide of the post. A shot was deflected just over the Cuffley crossbar and then Thake headed just too high and wide from another good position. In the dying seconds Cuffley wasted another great chance to score the winner as Eagles pushed up the field but again the shot was off target and the game ended all square.
