HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles extended their unbeaten run since the beginning of the season with a hard fought win over their visitors. The Eagles had a poor first half and then failed to take a number of good goal scoring opportunities in the second half, leaving the result uncertain until the final whistle.
Sandridge were unlucky not to score with their first real threat on goal after 15 minutes when the ball was driven across the Eagles goal area from the goal line a few yards from the near post, but straight into the hands of keeper Paul McGennity. Soon after they did score when a long ball down the centre evaded Eagles defenders and it was taken round McGennity and rolled into the open net from a few yards out. Eagles meanwhile could hardly manage a direct shot on goal. A poor Michael Deacon clearance direct to an opponent a few yards outside the penalty area fortunately did not result in another goal, the low shot going well wide.
Just past the half hour Eagles scored a lucky equaliser when a low shot from Joe Tyler deceived the Sandridge keeper, who allowed the ball to sneak into the bottom corner of the net. Iggy Thorne then dribbled through the Sandridge defence and along the goal line, but his low cross into the goal area was missed by defenders and attackers alike, and the chance went begging.. Shortly after he was put clear on goal with a pass from Tyler, but his attempt on goal from 6 yards was parried by the keeper, and the rebound shot bundled clear by a defender. Jamie Farrar then headed wide after a fine move involving Paul Morris and Tyler again.
After half time Eagles came out fighting and had most of the possession for the second half, pinning their opponents back and creating a number of goal chances. Sam Day shot wide when put clear by Dami Fajobi, and then burst through a static defence to blaze high over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. Fajobi shot just wide after a break down the right, a Tyler shot was saved by the keeper, the rebound was aimed at the empty net by Day but was kicked off the gaol line by a covering defender.. From a corner a header by Fajobi was almost forced over the goal line by Farrar in a frantic scramble. Eagles claimed a goal but the match referee was not convinced. The goal for the Eagles finally came on the hour when Thorne stroked in a cross from Liam Huckle.
Sandridge responded with sporadic attacks but Eagles pressed for another goal, leaving space at the back of their defence. On 80 minutes Sandridge claimed a goal when the ball bobbled around the Eagles goal area and was poked towards the net, but was scooped away by McGennity. Sandridge were furious a goal was not awarded but once again the match officials were not comvinced. Eagles counterattacked with an excellent effort from Sam Nicholls, running through the visitors defence from the half way line, his shot going wide, and in the dying minutes an unmarked Sandridge forward headed the ball just wide of a post from 10 yards with the open goal before him.
