Despite enjoying most of the possession Eagles struggled at times to overcome a physical Ware side, and missed goal chances meant a close finish to the game .
Most of the goal action came in the first half when eagles were unlucky to go in at half time a goal down. On 5 minutes Dami Fajobi cut inside a defender to shoot from 10 yards, but his low shot hit the foot of the post and rebounded clear. Eagles keeper Paul McGennity then had to tip over at full stretch an angled shot from Ware. Soon after Ware went ahead when Eagles defenders failed to pick up good movement in the goal area and allowed an unchallenged header from a corner kick to find the net.
By 15 minutes eagles had equalised when Joe Tyler rose high near the penalty spot to head in a direct free kick by Paul Morris. Eagles were unlucky not to get a second goal when Iggy Thorne crossed low from the goal line but the ball just evaded Fajobi and Sam Day. Ware conceded a succession of free kicks and one from 25 yards by Charlie Thake cleared the visitors’ crossbar with only inches to spare. Thake was then put clear down the centre, outplaced defenders but placed his low shot too close to the keeper who made an excellent blocking save .
Ware had their chances with a cross from the right which was hit over the Eagles cross bar from 10 yards. Almost on half time they did get the next goal when a shot from the edge of the penalty area struck a post and slowly rolled along the goal line to the opposite corner of the net. There was still time for Eagles to have 2 more good chances. First Morris ran down the centre of the field but with only the keeper to beat he placed the ball to close to the keeper, who saved with his feet. A corner then caused panic in a crowded Ware penalty area and Fajobi’s clever back heel from close range beat the keeper but was hacked off the goal line by a covering defender.
Second half Eagles started with real purpose. Minutes after half time Thake shot low into the corner of the net from 6 yards when defenders failed to clear a cross, and a few minutes later he hammered home a cross from Morris. Day tried a speculative shot from half way which sailed over the Ware keeper but fell wide of goal, and play went from end to end with neither side being able to create any more goal scoring opportunities. Ware pressed hard in the last 10 minutes but Eagles held on to secure a hard earned victory and remain unbeaten.
