ANAGRAM RECORDS TROPHY FIRST ROUND
Eagles beat a poor Tring team with a devastating second half display, and but for the performance of the substitute home keeper would have reached double figures.
Eagles started with purpose and Charlie Thake was unlucky not to hit the target in the opening minutes. After turning a defender with a clever header his shot was deflected by a defender just past a post. Shane Carthy then had a low shot from the edge of the penalty area also deflected wide of a post. On the half hour Carl Williams lofted a shot from the edge of the penalty area which beat the keeper but rebounded into play off a post. Thake smashed a shot just wide of goal following a knock down by Carthy and the home goal seemed to lead a charmed life with little action at the other end, leaving Eagles keeper Paul McGennity a mere spectator most of the time. The deadlock was broken just before half time after a terrible decision by the home keeper to rush well outside his penalty area to clear the ball. His first touch was poor allowing Thake to gain possession and roll the ball from 25 yards into an empty net.
Immediately after half time Eagles almost struck again when River Amis- Robinson raced down the centre of the field and his shot from the edge of the penalty area was pushed aside by the keeper at the second attempt. It was soon 2-0 . A direct free kick was fumbled and dropped by the keeper, and Carthy scored from close range. The home keeper was injured in the incident and had to be replaced.
Eagles were then rampant. The new Tring keeper saved a short from Carthy but the ball was not cleared fully and Carthy scored comfortably from 12 yards. Eagles football was a delight to watch and in one flowing move a pass from Thake was hit just wide by full back Sam Nicholl. The Tring keeper then made a brilliant save to stop a header from Carthy finding the top corner of the net. The resulting corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble and Joe Tyler pushed the ball into the net from close range.
Amis- Robinson scored the fifth goal with a fine solo effort running through a static home defence . Tring did have one excellent chance to score when clear on goal, but the shot from the edge of the penalty area was well stopped by McGennity.
Thake then got his second goal with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area, and then headed a cross just over the cross bar from 10 yards distance. Thake then almost turned provider with a cross finding Amis-Robinson in space but his shot rolled just wide of the keeper and post. The Tring keeper then had to make a great point blank save from a shot by Williams from a tight angle and then a shot by sub Josh Cranwell was deflected wide by a defender. Amis- Robinson finally got his reward for a man of the match display when a shot from Cranwell hit a post and rebounded into play only to be rifled home from close range.
In the dying minutes shots from Williams and Cameron Omar rained down on the home goal but flashed narrowly wide, before Omar hit the crossbar with a shot from 20 yards. Tring ended a well beaten side and the Eagles, winners of the trophy last season, march into the next round.
