ANAGRAM RECORDS TROPHY 2ND ROUND
The Eagles sank to their biggest defeat of the season with a poor team display, although the scoreline flattered the visitors. Last year’s cup winners are now out of the competition and will need to show a big improvement if they are to progress in the Aubrey Cup the following week.
Eagles started the first 15 minutes brightly with Broadfields showing little threat. A corner delivered low by Paul Morris into the penalty area was hit first time by Charlie Thake but his goal bound shot was deflected by covering defenders just wide of the goal for another corner. Thake then hit a vicious direct free kick straight at the keeper from 25 yards out. The ball was spilled but there was no Eagles player in a position to follow up and force the ball into the net. Soon after Broadfields scored with their first real chance heading in from a corner from close range with no Eagles defender close.. Keeper Paul McGennity then had to make a brilliant save to tip a rising shot from the edge of his penalty area just over the cross bar.
Eagles tried to counter attack and River Amis – Robinson dribbled through a static Broadfields defence only to have his final shot blocked. 10 minutes before half time Eagles were in deeper trouble when a slip on the greasy turf inside the Eagles penalty area allowed a free shot on goal which gave McGennity no chance of saving. Two defensive errors had cost them dear.
Eagles did not start the second half well and McGennity had to make another greate save to push a low shot from the edge of his penalty area wide of a post, but just past the hour it was 3-0 when a cross was headed home from close range.
Jamie Farrar managed to bundle the ball into the visitors net from close range but was judged to have fouled the keeper, and for the rest of the game Eagles failed to threaten the Broadfields goal or create any goal scoring chances. As they pushed forward they left gaps at the back which Broadfields eagerly exploited. A low shot from inside the penalty area made it 4-0 after 85 minutes and almost on the stroke of time the ball was fed down Eagles left flank, tired defenders were left floundering and the ball was comfortably passed across the advancing McGennity into the Eagles net to make the score a dismal 5-0 to the visitors.
