HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
A weakened Eagles side with only one sub, were deservedly beaten by Cuffley, who could have won by a higher margin. Eagles did not test the keeper once during the game and squandered the few scoring chances that they did create.
Cuffley started brighter and could have scored in the opening minutes when a cross from the right reached an unmarked player at the far post, but the ball was headed high and wide. Eagles were creating little in the final third but thought they should have had a penalty when Charlie Thake was brought down in the penalty area. The referee was not impressed.
Cufley soon created another chance with break down the right wing and low cross which evaded Eagles defenders and was sidefooted into the side netting wide of a an open goal. Eagles counter attacked and Carl Williams blasted the ball high over the cross bar from the edge of the penalty area when having a clear view of goal. He then was unfortunate to see a direct free kick from at least 25 yards just skim the home cross bar.
Soon after half time Eagles keeper Paul McGennity had to make the first of a string of great saves by parrying a shot from point blank range. As Cuffley piled on the pressure a cross was headed over the Eagles crossbar with more poor marking by Eagles defenders, and McGennity had to pull off another save to palm away a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Eagles struggled although Thake did manage to get a shot almost on target from near the penalty spot. Jake Tyler had to make a superb blocking tackle to deflect a goal bound close range shot wide for a corner, and McGennity made a great save but only to deflect the ball to a Cuffley player. The shot was heading for an empty net when cleared off the goal line by Liam Huckle.
In the closing stages Eagles had a great chance to steal the points when sub Ben Southby ran on to a pass from Jamie Platt, but his first touch was not good and he was pushed wide by a covering defender, and was unable to squeeze a shot into the net from a tight angle. A spectacular shot from 25 yards sailed close to the Eagles goal with insufficient curl to find the net, and it looked as if the game would be goalless, but in the dying minutes Cuffley scored with a low shot into the Eagles net.
