HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
In a crazy game Eagles raced to a commanding lead in the first half hour, allowed their opponents to get back into the game, scored more goals and then conceded two late goals to make the result much closer than it should have been. Missed chances and a poor defensive performance by both sides contributed to an exciting game for the neutral spectator.
Eagles were ahead within 10 minutes when Carl Williams latched on to a through ball and steered a low shot past the visiting keeper. They had a let off soon after when a Standon corner evaded Eagles defenders but no Standon player was able to force the ball into the net.
On 25 minutes it was 2-0 when Charlie Thake broke through a fragile defence and shot low into the corner of the net off the inside of a post. He then added a third within minutes. Standon counter attacked and on the half hour made the score 3-1. Eagles new keeper Sam Chester made a great save to palm out a goal destined shot but only to an unmarked Standon forward, whose low shot found an unguarded net from 12 yards.
A direct free kick from 20 yards by Williams almost found the net but was diverted for a corner by a defender. Almost immediately Standon narrowed the deficit to 3-2 when Paul Morris failed to clear the ball from his penalty area cleanly and the loose ball was hammered into the net from 12 yards. That success for Standon was short lived when minutes later River Amis- Robinson cut the ball back to Dami Fajobi who scored from the edge of the penalty area. The action was still not finished before half time when Chester had to push a low shot round his post for a corner, which was then headed just wide of goal.
Standon started the second half strongly and Chester had to make another good save to push the ball round his post. He then almost undid all his good work by miskicking a goal kick direct to an opponent about 25 yards from goal, but Joe Tyler made a great blocking tackle to avert the danger.Tyler then produced a great effort at the opposite end of the pitch to force the keeper to push the ball wide of a post. Amis- Robinson made a great run through a static defence but shot straight at the keeper and then Iggy Thorne made a storming run down the right side, but his low cross found a single defender rather the two unmarked waiting Eagles players. Play raced from end to end and although Chester made a great save the ball fell to an unmarked forward who smashed the ball into an unguarded net, making the score 4-3.
This only spurred the Eagles into a determined response and first Thake headed in from the penalty spot a direct free kick from half way by Williams, and so completing his hat trick, before Amis-Robinson scored the goal of the game by running through the Standon defence from the half way line and then coolly finishing with a low shot past the keeper into the net, making the score 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Eagles this was not the end of the goal action. On 75 minutes Thake had a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected wide of goal by a defender, then a high cross was missed by Chester at the other end, and had to be hacked off the eagles goal line by Jake Tyler. Fajobi should have made the score more emphatic but after a great run down the right flank he shot wide of an open goal from 10 yards out. Eagles were to rue this miss because in the last 10 minutes Standon scored twice, due to defensive errors. Chester totally failed to deal with a long back pass and succeeded in losing the ball to an opponent resulting into a soft goal into an empty net.
