HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Eagles cruised to a comfortable victory over visitors who barely troubled Eagles keeper Paul McGennity to make a save all afternoon.
For the first 15 minutes neither side made much progress against opposition defences although Scott Piggott did have a direct free kick diverted by the Evergreen defensive wall and the keeper had to make a decent save to push away a direct free kick taken by Sam Nicholls. Eagles finally broke the deadlock with two quick goals just before the half hour. The first came from a rapid break out of defence with a pass from River Amis Robinson to Piggott who cut inside a defender and pushed the ball wide of the onrushing keeper from close range. He followed up with another goal after chasing a long ball down the centre of the pitch and coolly lobbing the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the penalty area.. The visitors’ keeper then made a good save from a shot by Amis- Robinson who had dribbled through a static Evergreen defence.
Eagles piled on the pressure and a fine run by Iggy Thorne came to nothing before Piggott nodded a cross towards the bottom corner of the net, but the keeper managed to push the ball round his post at full stretch. Joe Tyler flashed a low shot just past the post from 15 yards before Eagles had loud claims for a penalty turned down by the match referee when Luke Donnelly was barged over when climbing to reach a high cross to the far post.
After half time Eagles wasted no time getting further ahead. The Evergreen keeper made a great save to push away a Ray Antcliff direct free kick then Tyler blasted over the cross bar when well placed to score, and headed over a cross from Nicholls. Antcliff then scored with a well flighted free kick from 25 yards and a few yards in from the left touchline, which passed over the keeper in to the roof of the net. Piggott was put clear on goal from a pass inside the defence by Donnelly but was taken out by the keeper just outside the penalty area. The keeper was cautioned but the resultant free kick flashed wide.
In the last quarter of the game Eagles scored 3 goals in rapid succession. First Nicholls shot low into the net from 20 yards after receiving a pass from Piggott, and then Eagles introduced 3 subs to offer fresh energy. Amis Robinson almost pushed home a corner from Carl Williams before the Evergreen keeper managed to drop on to the ball, and then Tyler scored a peach of a goal lifting the ball into the net from 12 yards after a great spell of short passing football between Tyler, Amis-Robinson and Thorne. With almost the last kick of the game Amis- Robinson scored a deserved goal with a close range finish. Evergreen had a few long range shots which missed the target but sadly there was little to report concerning any real effort to threaten the Eagles goal.
