HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Eagles have to thank keeper Paul McGennity’s second half penalty save for maintaining their 100% league record, after being the poorer side for much of the second half.
Eagles got off to a dream start after 10 minutes when Paul Morris cut inside and rounded the keeper to place the ball firmly in the back of the opposition net. Sun Sports were not offering much of a threat other than a 2o yards shot straight at McGennity. Eagles were playing some good football and a fine move involving Liam Huckle and Morris broke down with the final cross finding a defender. Both sides mis placed passes as they struggled to control the game, and there was little to trouble either keeper. Carl Williams missed a good chance when with a clear view of goal his shot from the edge of the penalty area was straight at the keeper and carried little power.
Sun Sports then sprung into life and scored when a ball into the Eagles penalty area was skilfully brought down and clipped over McGennity into the far corner of the net. Within minutes Eagles has responded with a magnificent goal by River Amis- Robinson who raced on to a long pass down the left of the field and let fly an unstoppable shot from 15 yards.
In the second half Eagles seemed to lose their way and Sun Sports became more dominant. Just after 50 minutes Mc Gennity could not hold a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area which bounced up in front of him. As defender Michael Payne attempted to clear the ball he was judged to have fouled his opponent, and a fiercely contested penalty was awarded to Sun Sports. The penalty was struck well but McGennity flung himself across goal to push the ball wide.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure. Huckle was beaten for speed down the right flank but the angled shot from 8 yards hit the outside of the Eagles post and spun to safety. Soon after a break down the left resulted in a shot which cannoned off the opposite post. Eagles tried to get back into the game. A great pass by Williams split the centre of the visitors defence leaving Morris unmarked 20 yards from goal, but he wanted more time to bring the ball on to his favourite foot and his final shot was blocked by a defender.
Eagles hopes rose when Ray Antcliff was cynically fouled by the keeper a yard outside the edge of the penalty area when clear on goal but the free kick was pushed over the cross bar by the keeper.. James Endacott chased a long ball down the centre as Eagles became penned in their own half, but his low shot from the edge of the penalty area lacked power and was comfortably pushed wide by the keeper
In the last 10 minutes Eagles clung on to their lead as Sun Sports dominated and Williams spent most of the outstanding minutes in the sin bin for remarks made to the referee. A direct free kick from 20 yards skimmed the Eagles cross bar and then a cross from the right was headed wide from the edge of the goal area when a goal seemed certain A shot from 25 yards crashed wide and then Eagles had a chance to settle in the game in the final minutes when Antcliff was again fouled near the edge of the penalty area after a strong run down the centre. Endacott’s low free kick aimed for the bottom corner of the net was pushed round the foot of the post by the keeper, and amazingly both goals had stayed intact for the whole of the second half, giving Eagles a hard won victory.
