Eagles Seniors finally overcame the disappointments of a difficult season by winning the Aubrey Cup for the third successive year at the County Ground Letchworth on 7 May against Met Police Bushey. After no goals at full time and after extra time the Eagles finally won 6-5 on penalties following 2 dramatic penalty saves by teenager Michael Johnson. The Eagles could have won the game during the first 90 minutes, during which Ben L’Honore had a penalty well saved by the keeper in the first half following a foul on Joe De La Salle, but they visibly tired during extra time. Even the ref found the pace relentless, completing only half the game before having to hand over to 4th official Andy O’Brien.

Eagles penalty experts were, in no particular order, Sam Gittings ( making up for a few misses earlier in the game), Lewis Mitchell, Lee Pateman, Joe Tyler, Jamie Platt and Ben L’Honore.

The two met in the 2010 final, with Eagles running out 2-0 winners, but there was to be no revenge mission for Bushey as young goalkeeper Michael Johnson saved two spot kicks to give Eagles victory. It had not been a typical 0-0 draw, with both sides missing a hatful of chances, including Eagles’ Ben L’Honore having a penalty saved. Bushey had started the brighter, with their five man midfield linking fluently with their lone striker, but Johnson was not seriously tested in goal. Eagles then came back into the game as the first half drew to a close, and created several chances of their own. Jack Gregson’s excellent control created a chance for himself, but he snatched at the finish, and L’Honore’s free kick and Joe Tyler’s shots were blocked. David Locke made one of many bursts forward from left back but his effort from close range was stopped by a last ditch tackle.

The opening stages of the second half presented Eagles with a superb chance to go in front as Joe De La Salle was tripped by a sliding Bushey challenge, but L’Honore’s penalty was saved by Bushey’s keeper, down to his right. They were almost made to pay for it immediately when Bushey’s Campo ran through the middle and tried to lob Johnson, only for the ball to canon back off the ‘keeper’s chest. Harry Holland then tried an overhead kick from Locke’s superb left wing cross but it went inches wide. Sam Gittings was introduced on the left wing for Eagles and he had an immediate chance to make an impact as he was played in by Tyler, but his shot across goal was saved.

Extra time was wide open too, with Bushey’s sub striker Derby scooping over after shrugging off Markus Brown, and Gittings again having a chance from the left flank, but this time screwing wide. Brown then made a goal saving challenge after Bushey’s forward had a heavy first touch, and Campo missed the best open-play chance of the game when he went round Johnson and with the whole goal to aim at, sliced wide.

The two teams had already met four times throughout the season, with Bushey winning two, Eagles one, and one draw, and would have to be separated by penalties.

Gittings, L’Honore and their opposite numbers both scored before late Eagles sub Danny Large missed. Joe Tyler and Lewis Mitchell then scored, leaving Bushey captain Courtnage with the chance to win it, but Johnson saved brilliantly to his left. Jamie Platt and Lee Pateman then tucked their kicks away before Johnson made the crucial save and sunk to his knees to await a joyous bundle from his teammates. It was left to Tyler to lift the trophy – Eagles fifth in three seasons – but Johnson was the hero of the day.

Team: Johnson, Pennery (Platt), Brown, Mitchell, Locke, Pateman, Tyler, L’Honore,Holland(Large), De La Salle (Gittings), Gregson

Eagles finished the season with local bragging rights after an excellent performance saw off champions Baldock Town.

The first half was a quick-paced open affair, with both teams having chances. Harry Holland missed the best of them for Eagles, but Morrison made no mistake from close range just before the break to give Baldock a half time lead.

Eagles came out fighting in the second half, and Jack Gregson struck a superb equaliser, cutting in from the right to hit a left footed shot into the far corner. Joe Tyler then got his second in as many games when he headed Sam Gittings cross home to give Eagles the lead. Baldock enjoyed good territory but never troubled Michael Johnson in goal, and this let Eagles pick them off on the break. With 20 minutes remaining, Gregson got his second after latching on to Jamie Platt’s pass to make it 3-1, and effectively seal the points. Holland then got in on the act, drilling a low shot across goal and into the far corner after a swift counter attack. Baldock’s Taylor grabbed a consolation at the end when he struck a left footed shot into the roof of the net from close range, but it was too late.

It was a promising result for Eagles, who will take confidence into the Aubrey Cup final against Met Police Bushey on Monday. Kick off is 6pm at theCountyGround.

Team: Johnson, Pennery,Tyler, Brown, Till, Cox (Antcliff), Pateman, L’Honore, Gittings (Platt), Gregson,Holland(Finan).

Eagles look to be finishing the season strongly after a good performance led to them seeing off Wormley.

The game was played at Baldock’s Arena due to Pixmore being waterlogged, with the slick surface helping Eagles to pass the ball. They hit the frame of the goal twice in quick succession after 20 minutes through long range drives from Lee Pateman and Harry Holland, and Sam Gittings’ soaring header was well saved. Then Wormley hit Eagles with a sucker punch when Dodd tricked his way between two challenges to finish well. But Joe De La Salle buried a penalty just before the break after a daft handball from Wormley’s full back.

The second half was all Eagles, with Gittings and De La Salle again hitting the post. De La Salle also sliced wide when played clean through by Joe Tyler. It looked as though it was going to be a frustrating day beforeTylerpopped up with the winner on 75 minutes, flicking home after Jack Gregson’s header had again hit the post. Eagles hit the post for a fifth time in stoppage time, when De La Salle’s long range curler beat the keeper.

Eagles face Baldock in a local derby at the Arena on Tuesday before facing Met Police Bushey in the Aubrey Cup final on Bank Holiday Monday at the County Ground.

Team: Johnson, Pennery, Mitchell, Locke, Till,Tyler, Pateman, Antcliff (Gregson), Holland (Drackford), Gittings (Large), De La Salle

Eagles comfortably dispatched Buntingford on Wednesday night in an as one-sided a game you’re ever likely to see.

A rainfall before the game helped level the playing surface for the home side as they passed the ball well, creating countless scoring opportunities in the opening half an hour.

The opener came from the spot. After Lee Pateman was shoved in the back, Joe De La Salle buried the penalty to the keepers right.

Soon after Harry Holland rounded the keeper after he had fumbled a shot, and rolled into the empty net.

Hollandwas at it again a few minutes later when he dribbled past the keeper with ease to slot home.

Already-relegated Buntingford’s only shot of the game came just before the break when a speculative volley from the edge of the box left Michael Johnson with no chance.

In the second half the one way traffic continued. De La Salle made it four with a header form a corner.

It was left toHollandto complete his hat-trick just before the final whistle when he slotted home after controlling a long ball.

Eagles must win their remaining five games to finish in the top three and gain promotion.

Team: Johnson, Pennery, Garwood (L’Honore), Brown, Locke, Pateman, Tyler, Gregson, Cox (Platt),Holland, De La Salle

Eagles kept their slim promotion chances alive with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bovingdon at Pixmore.

Going a goal down through a header from a corner after ten minutes woke Eagles up, and they eventually sprang into life.

The equaliser came when Joe De La Salle robbed the left back of possession and drilled in a low cross which was turned into his own net by a defender.

Several second half chances came and went, most notably when Ben L’Honore headed wide when it looked easier to score.

But De La Salle continued his fine scoring run when he fired a shot across the keeper after latching onto a ball over the top.

Late sub Danny large rounded things off with a close range effort towards the end, with Bovingdon barely threatening Michael Johnson’s goal for the remained of the game.

Letchworth made it through to their third consecutive Aubrey Cup final with a 2-1 win at Wormley on Saturday, keeping alive the hope of a third consecutive triumph in the competition.

They always looked more likely to win the game, but were made to work hard by a physical and determined Wormley side who never gave up.

The best chance of the first half fell to Joe De La Salle who was played clean through by Mitch Cox, but he chose to try and chip the keeper and only found his midriff. A long range volley from Cox then went narrowly over.

Jimmy Adide, making his first Eagles first team appearance of the season, was untroubled in the first half.

The second was more open, and Eagles soon got in front. Cox played a through ball to Ben L’Honore and he jinked round the keeper and dummied a defender on the line, before shooting into the net.

Wormley’s response was to force a penalty, when Paul McGennity lunged in at a winger. The spot kick was tucked away by Wormley’s Jack Barrett.

But Eagles bounced back, and went back in front when De La Salle headed in L’Honore’s corner at the far post.

David Locke’s angled drive was tipped over the bar in the closing stages as Eagles chased a third, but it was not needed.

They will now play Met Police Bushey in the final at the County Ground on Monday May 7, in a repeat of the 2010 final.

Team: Adide, McGennity, Garwood, Brown, Mitchell, Pennery, Cox, Gregson, Locke, De La Salle, L’Honore.

Cuffley 1-3 Letchworth Garden City Eagles

Eagles made it two wins in three days with a 3-1 league win at Cuffley on Easter Monday.

After going a goal down, it was De La Salle (two) and L’Honore that did the damage, and moved Eagles up to seventh with up to six games in hand on those above them.

Team: Johnson, Pennery, Locke, Brown, Antcliff,Holland, Gregson, Cox, Gittings, De La Salle, L’Honore.
