Match Reports

MATCH 4 – Royston Crow League versus Hitchin Town.

Saturday 29th September at Letchworth.

A change to the usual line up this week with Robert playing in goal due to Mash being injured, Callum playing up front and Ryan in the midfield. Rob did a sterling job and made some cracking saves which was just as well as Hitchin applied pressure straight off with one close shave as the ball hit the side net. Fortunately the whites responded well and we had two near misses before a great run and shot from Austin which their keeper saved but Ryan followed up the rebound to see the Whites go 1-0 up. Harry and McCauley were kept busy and displayed some intelligent defending to keep the score at 1-0 at half time. Hitchin came out fighting forcing an early save from Robert. They continued to come at us quickly benefiting from any of our mistakes and two excellent goals from them saw them take a 2-1 lead. A 3rd goal from Hitchin saw the final score of 3-1 and sadly our 3rd defeat of the season. A confusing start to our season as I’ve seen some excellent football from all of you, just not all at the same time. Fingers crossed for next week and a break in our unlucky run.

Liam stood in Mash’s shoes for this game and straight away was forced into making a good save. The first half seemed pretty evenly matched with both sides at times coming under pressure. Alex had a good game and provided a good clearance ensuring 0-0 at half time. In the 2nd half Yellows pushed forward but alas to no avail as Hitchin went 1-0 up, followed some minutes later by another. There followed some very tense final minutes when it looked like Hitchin could get a 3rd (a good save from Liam prevented that). So full time 2-0 to Hitchin which gave our bright battling start a somewhat disappointing 2nd half finish. Never mind chins up, as Arnie once famously said ‘We’ll be back!’ (ok slight poetic license).

Next week we are away to Stevenage, as ever keep up the good work Eagles!!!!

Whites: Robert, Ryan (1), Harry, Liam, Austin, McCauley, Callum, Riley
Man of Match: Austin

MATCH 3 – Royston Crow League versus Bishop Stortford.

Saturday 22nd September at Letchworth.

Yellows started the proceedings today against a strong team from Bishop Stortford. It started as a tight contest with not much to choose between the teams. BS then started to edge ahead and some neat play saw them take a lead of 1-0. Yellows almost equalised when Ryan put in a cracking tackle and a good move resulted in a lovely cross that we just failed to convert. BS were then awarded a free kick on the edge of the Yellows penalty box and with the wall retreating they blasted a good shot in to make it 2-0. There followed some good saves from Liam and a great last ditch tackle from Alex to leave Yellows 2-0 down at half time. Second half was a much closer contest but BS took a 3-0 lead after Liam made another great save only to be unlucky with the follow up. Talking of following up that is just what David did on his debut to a Ryan shot to make the final score 3-1.

Whites also came up against a strong team from BS and from looking at my notes today (yes surprisingly I do actually write some things down in my Disney Cars note Book!) I had only written a couple of lines. They were, even contest, McCauley mopping up, decent save Mash, couple efforts Noah and cracking game. It did end 0-0 but it was a very enjoyable game that may be BS just edged but Whites really battled hard and did have a couple of half chances in the second half. Our defence was solid with McCauley seeming to be everywhere and I am sure that when we do score the goals will start to fly in again

So two hard games this week but good battling performances by both sides, the wife is back reporting this week so that may just be our lucky mascot that we need!! Also big welcome to David and as Andy said no pressure on you now after scoring on your debut!!

Next week we are home to Hitchin, as ever keep up the good work Eagles!!!!

Yellows: Liam, Callum, Ryan, Alex, Thomas, Lukas, Riley, Josh, Rhys, David (1), Leon
Man of Match: Liam

MATCH 2 – Royston Crow League versus Stotfold Juniors.

Saturday 15th September at Stotfold.

You may all remember our sudden death penalty shoot out when we last met in a summer tournament. We were just piped at the post then and so too were we today. There were some excellent displays of competitive play from both sides and our 2-0 defeat in no way reflected that.

Noah had a good shot on goal within four minutes of play and there followed two near misses, with the ball hitting the post. Austin had a shot at goal before Stotfold were awarded a free kick which saw them miss but start to apply some pressure. Ten minutes into play Stotfold scored their first and tried their luck again. Fortunately Mash performed an outstanding save which resulted in a minor injury, importantly denied them their second goal. Second half saw some good defending from Harry and McCauley but it didn’t stop a second goal from rolling in despite Mash’s excellent reach and contact with it. Second half also saw subs Callum and Ryan on. The whites kept applying the pressure right to the last minute when a good run by Ryan resulted in the ball hitting the post and traveling down the line but sadly not across it. Well done guys, you all deserved your Man of Match, a win next week is surely in the bag!!!!!

Eagles Yellows came out to a flying start and the Stotfold team were feeling the pressure immediately. Rhys scored his first (of many) goals and some thoughtful assistance from Callum set him up quickly for his second. Ten minutes into play saw subs Josh and Thomas on, with Thomas immediately getting stuck in and having a good goal. Attempt denied by their goalie. Stotfold fought back with a good shot at goal which Josh cleverly kicked off the line to deny them a goal. With the whole team working well together Rhys scored a hat trick, with the third goal almost stumbling in making the half time score 3-0. The second half saw Stotfold win back a goal and start to apply some pressure. A good save from Liam and some good defending ensured that the Yellows stayed ahead. Rhys, well Rhys must have had wings on his boots because another two goals from Rhys saw the final result of 5-1, and the second consecutive win from the Yellows. Well done!! M.O.M umm…. 5 goals, has to be Rhys!!!!

Next week we are home to BSCFC, as ever keep up the good work Eagles!!!!

Man of Match: Whole Team

Yellows: Liam, Callum, Ryan, Alex, Thomas, Lucas, Riley, Josh, Rhys (5)

MATCH 1 – Royston Crow League versus Sawbridgeworth.

Saturday 8th September at Letchworth.

Saturday started with a good viewing of many a new football boot coming in all the colours under the sun, a rarity to see a black boot now days. Good to be back watching football again, may the rain free viewing continue for a while!

Eagles Whites started well and had Sawbridgeworth in their own half for the opening minutes of the game and it was against the run of play that Sawbridgeworth broke and scored to go 1-0 up. This seemed to wake Sawbridgeworth up and they had far more of the play. Whites came back to level at 1-1 with a lovely one touch move which was well finished by Noah. This seemed to spur on Swabridgeworth even more and they ended up scoring two more goals to go in at half time 3-1. The second half was a much more even contest with a couple of good efforts from free kicks from Robert and their keeper being forced into a good save. Whites unfortunately could not get that vital goal to get back into the contest and it ended up 3-1 to Sawbridgeworth.

Eagles Yellows started brightly in the second game and spent most of the first half in the Sawbridgeworth half. A lovely move and excellent cross from Thomas resulted in a clinical finish from Ryan to open the scoring. Callum made it 2-0 before half time with a cracking long range effort. Yellows continued where they left of in the second half and went 4-0 up with good finishing from Noah and Thomas who did a very impressive dive celebration afterwards. They tired a bit at the end letting in two late goals but a very good performance ended up with them running out 4-2 winners.

So two enjoyable games to start with this week, everyone is now eased back in and I’m sure they all be raring to go for the next match. Think on you could be my team and have the best start since 1973 (5 straight wins) and still be 0 points. You will be pleased to know that Michelle will be reporting next week so no Leeds quotes in the report!!

Next week we are away at Stotfold, as ever keep up the good work Eagles!!!!
