Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2 Royston Celtic……………………….1

(Reuben, Alli)

u8 blues

The Blues brought the curtain down on their first season at 11 a side with a stylish victory over Royston Celtic and in so doing secured third place in the league in a magnificent campaign that has also seen them lift two prestigious trophies. It was an attractive match, played in warm sunshine at Pixmore, on a daisy strewn pitch that looked like it was ready for the summer. The win this morning also erased memories of a very odd defeat against the same side earlier in the season when the Blues were the dominant force but lost out to two breakaway goals.

Unusually for this season, the Blues had just 12 players available today but this helped in terms of the continuity of play and substitutions were limited, enabling the boys to play for longer. Different formations were also tried by Gary as our boys experimented with new roles with next season in mind and the result was an excellent all round performance which saw the Blues playing some fluent and slick passing football which could have yielded a bigger margin of victory. We lined up with Sam in goal, a back four of Tommy, Stuart, Stan and Myles, Marcus, Matthew, Alli and Jake across the middle and Reuben and Ethan up front, Oscar starting as sub. Much of the first half play was end to end – the Blues clicked into their passing game quickly whilst Royston looked for the long ball forward and attacked down the wings. Ethan shot wide early on and both Marcus and Reuben carried on their intelligent form from last week. All three were involved in the opening goal – Marcus made inroads down the left and found Ethan whose great ball in was poked home cleverly by Reuben to make it 1-0. Subsequently, our goal wasn’t under much threat and we were comfortable for the rest of the half. The Blues’ new defensive back line looked strong and secure, with Stuart particularly relishing his new role and both Matthew and Alli setting lots of moves going with their creative passing. No sign of an end of season match as our boys challenged and competed tigerishly and good recovering tackles at the back were complemented by sudden injections of pace going forward which pinned Royston back and created more chances. Two of the highlights of the first half was an outstanding repeated passing one two, overlapping move between Myles and Oscar that went the length of the pitch and almost ended with Ethan shooting home and an outrageous , brilliant shot from Marcus from a long way out that struck the bar. Marcus seems determined to do something spectacular each match this season!

u8 blues

With a comfortable lead at half time, Gary praised the team and looked for more of the same in the second half. The formation changed slightly, with Tommy pushing up into midfield, but no major changes were necessary. The second 30 minutes saw an increase in the Blues’ superiority and all the good things from the first half developed even more. Myles had an excellent game at the back, tackling solidly and denying the Royston attackers any space, Stan let no-one through in the centre and Stuart continued to have a blinder, winning most of his tackles, closing down the attackers and bringing the ball forward with power and determination. Oscar showed lovely movement and passes and Jake too made some superb touches and found his team mates with accurate layoffs and through balls. Alli and Matthew worked well in tandem and distributed the ball creatively, switching play out to the wings and showing quick, silky footwork and, switched to the left, Tommy tormented his opponents as he skillfully glided past defenders on a regular basis. Several good chances to extend the lead went begging before Alli scored with a spectacular effort from 30 yards that soared over the Royston keeper into the net to make it 2-0. The match looked safe and very comfortable for the Blues, even as other efforts were not converted, including one that was set up by Reuben as he rounded the Royston keeper and a shot that flashed across the face of the goal. When Royston got one back to make it 2-1 however, we hoped that these misses weren’t going to come back to haunt us and the last few minutes were marginally more nervy than they should have been. Sam though was much less busy than his counterpart and the ref blew soon afterwards to finish the Blues’ season with a very deserved 2-1 win. Royston deserve credit too for how they kept going for the whole of the match.

Well done boys on a super end to the season and for all your great achievements this year. Two Cups and third place in the league is an outstanding haul and all of you have been a great credit to your club. It has been fantastic to see how you have developed over the season and how your passing football has adapted to the demands of the bigger game. Your Cup exploits have been truly remarkable and have brought qualities of battling determination and resilience to the fore. Fantastic boys – very well done to each and every one of you and a pleasure and privilege for all of us to be there to see it!

Thanks to Phil, Steve and Gary for all their hard work, excellent coaching and for juggling such a large group of players over the season – not an easy job by any means. Lastly, thanks to all the loyal Blues’ supporters – family and friends – that have been there on the touchline each week and for their many contributions, from cheering our boys on to volunteering to ref, run the line and prepare the pitches. An all round effort supporting Letchworth Garden City Eagles Under 11 Blues – well done everybody and what a great season!!

No.27 Sunday 3rd May 2009 Royston Crow Under 11 League Cup Final

Champions again! Brilliant Blues achieve another Cup triumph

Buntingford Cougars Blues………………………1 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2

(Ethan, Charley)

u11 blue

In a very exciting, pulsating match, the Blues played their best football of the season to decisively and deservedly beat the league champions and their fierce local rivals, Buntingford Cougars Blues, who have swept almost all before them in this campaign. This was a triumph for the excellence of the Eagles’ play, which shone through so gloriously today and it brought a rare and prestigious cup double in a season that has had some ups and downs but which has ended on a fantastically high note. If the County Cup final was about the occasion, today was most definitely about the football that was played and the Blues thus secured an incredible fourth consecutive win in this competition, lifting the Danny Spinks Memorial Trophy. These yellow kits are becoming addictive and certainly a lucky charm!

It was a good set up this morning at The Bury, in what must have felt like a home game for Buntingford and after some sociable mingling of the two sets of supporters in the excellent clubhouse, the two teams came out onto the pitch and were presented before the kickoff. The Blues lined up with Sam in goal. Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Marcus, Alli, Cam and Oscar in the middle and Ethan and Reuben leading the line up front – Jake, Luke, Billy, Myles and Stuart began as subs. Right from the start, one could feel and see the competitive nature of the game, with the score being 1-1 in matches this season and much local pride at stake. Tackles were sharp and fiercely contested and both sides pushed forward in turn in the first few minutes. Slowly but surely, it was the Blues who began to exert the greater pressure and they began to get on their game with real purpose. Some lovely passes were made, the ball being moved around sweetly and chances were carved out. Alli shot just over the bar and a couple of near misses raised the excitement levels in the crowd but the final ball was not converted. Already the pattern of the match was being set, with Buntingford hitting it long, looking for the ball over the top to their strikers and the Blues responding with passing football and our opponents must have already known that they were in for a game like no other they had experienced this season. Our defence was holding rock solid and balls were threaded through expertly form defence to launch new attacks. Reuben was producing one of his finest performances for the Blues, as he held up the ball and laid it off intelligently and his partnership with Ethan was outstanding, each of them seeming to know the spaces where the other was running into. Substitutions meant a change of formation, with Stuart coming on and going into centre midfield, Cam moving to the right and Oscar reverting to right back. Cam had a shot but Reuben was just unable to get on the end of it to follow up as the best chance so far was created but then, after 20 minutes, at just the same time as in the County Cup final, Charley put a ball through to Ethan and he finished expertly with a great shot to put the Blues 1-0 up. Great excitement from us all and thoroughly deserved after all the Blues’ dominance and pressure. The lead was maintained to half time and the whistle blew on a half during which the Blues had played some outstanding football, possibly their best of the season and it had truly been a team effort, with every one of the boys at the top of his game.

u11 blue

We all knew that Buntingford would come strong in the second half and this they did, aided by the strong cross wind that was now marginally in their favour. Clearly stung by being outplayed in the first half, they had the Blues under the cosh for the first period as they put pressure on our goal. The long ball was still in evidence, but they also found a lot of space on our right flank and their tricky and skilful winger was causing the Blues some problems. We were pinned back in our half and one could see the tide turning. We prophetically saw problems coming on the right and this came true when the Cougars winger cut down the wing to the byline and pulled it back cleverly for his team mate to finish powerfully into the roof of our net from close range to draw the score level at 1-1. Buntingford’s confidence was now high and as more balls went towards our goal, we feared the worse and were unable to push back our opponents to relieve the pressure. However our boys showed great determination in defending resolutely, Sam handled confidently and even corners were cleared with the minimum of danger. More substitutions brought back on Reuben, Ethan and Marcus and the tide began to swing back in our favour once more as we again held up the ball well and took the play to Buntingford once more. Things were getting tense as we knew that the next goal would be decisive and things were on a knife edge. Two minutes before the end, we won a free kick on the edge of the Buntingford penalty area and Charley powered in a tremendous, unstoppable free kick high into the Buntingford net that was not unlike the Beckham free kick against Greece a few years ago that took England to the World Cup Finals – just as much at stake today! Incredible scenes of jubilation on the pitch and the touchline and a few minutes later the ref blew up and the Eagles had won a famous victory, 2-1!

u11 blue

A truly brilliant win this morning, with the Blues showing some of their finest football in the first half and then the character and determination to hold firm under severe pressure and then come again strongly to get the winning goal. A match all about teamwork and a vindication of the right way to play football, with passing and movement as the central features. Buntingford are a good side and we congratulate them on winning the league this season, but the Blues were emphatically the better team and this was a deeply satisfying victory. Well done boys – another fantastic occasion and we are all immensely proud of what you achieved today. Very well done indeed!

Team – 5* performances all round!

In the bright, breezy sunshine on Royston Heath, the Blues played two matches against Royston Town Youth and came away with two wins and six points that propels them up to third place in the table. If the first game was comfortable, with the Blues playing some lovely passing football and scoring freely, all credit to Royston for how they played in the second match; it would have been easy for them to feel dispirited after conceding so many goals but they continued to play good football, belying their position at the bottom of the league, put up a real fight and held our boys at bay for three quarters of the match. For the Blues, this morning puts them spot on for the big match next Sunday against Buntingford and everyone seemed full of confidence, hungry for the ball and working for the team.

In the first match, the most notable thing about the Blues’ lineup was Matthew playing in an advanced role in midfield whilst Jake and Reuben began leading the line. Our boys were on song from the beginning and stroked the ball around confidently. The pressure was already building on Royston when Cam shot in to give the Blues the lead and then Jake made it 2-0 with a great headed goal after Tommy had done some good work retrieving a ball from a corner and whipped it back in. Only 2-0 at half time but the strong wind was partly responsible – with some great passes and balls forward but just too long and they often zipped out of play. A different story in the second half though as the goals came thick and fast and the Blues played some tremendous stuff. Jake got his second with a great strike from long range after being fed by a ball from Matthew and then after a ‘dress rehearsal’ shot by Reuben, he swiveled again in the Royston box and put an unstoppable rocket past the keeper to make it

4-0. Sam had little to do but the Blues kept up the pressure and ruthlessly went in search of more goals as they racked up their biggest league win of the season. Matthew got in on the act as he linked well with Marcus, moved forward and put it away with the outside of his boot for 5-0 and then Marcus himself scored with a first time shot high into the net after good work by Stuart. Charley got two more as he marauded down the right and was set up with beautifully weighted diagonal passes and Cam got his second when converting a bouncing ball to make the final score 9-0. Hard work for Royston but they didn’t let their heads drop and mention must be made of the young lady on their team who had a terrific game, showing both determination and skill. For the Blues, this was a good win – nice to see the goals flowing (helps our goal difference) – but they went about it in the right way, everyone vocal and hungry for the ball and putting in the effort right to the last.

If anyone thought the second game was going to be a formality, quite a surprise was in store as the Blues reverted to a more familiar formation. It can’t have been an easy season for Royston, with only one win and three points, but the spirit they showed after the mauling in the first match was highly commendable. They kept the Blues at bay for over three quarters of the match and competed for every ball. Yes we hit the bar, had almost all of the pressure and dominated the play, but Royston deservedly rode their luck and held on determinedly. Good saves were made by the Royston keeper and there were numerous near misses and scrambles in the area but for all the Blues pressure, the goal just wouldn’t come. Once again we were undone by the offside rule and we all wondered whether this was going to be one of the most unlikely results of the season. However then 10 minutes from the end, Harry spared the Blues’ blushes as he followed up an unlucky spill from the keeper after a great shot from Oscar and soon after Reuben confirmed the win when he did the same after a shot from Charley. 2-0 the final score and huge sighs of relief all round. Well done to Royston on their efforts this morning and good luck next season. Congratulations to our boys on their play today and the very best of luck in the League Cup Final next week – COME ON THE BLUES!!

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….3 Knebworth Lions Youth……………………….0

(Harry, Ethan, Marcus)

Matches are coming thick and fast now and this was the fifth game in 18 days as the league programme comes to the end for this season. It turned into a bloodless and comfortable victory for the Blues in another evening match, played in brilliant early evening sunshine at Pixmore. It was good for our boys to get back to winning ways after four consecutive defeats and this was a much improved performance from the team as they showed old foes Knebworth no mercy and dominated for most of the game. The familiar confident passing play was back on show and if all our chances had been taken, the Blues’ dominance would have been reflected by a much bigger margin of victory, possibly a huge one. No matter, 3 points and a confidence boosting win were just what was needed.

Phil and Steve had a full squad of 18 players to choose from this evening and there were frequent substitutions during the course of the match. The Blues lined up with Sam back in goal, a back four of Oscar, Charley, Matthew and Tommy, Stuart, Alli, Cam and Harry across the middle and Reuben and Ethan up front. Jake, Marcus, Hanney, Myles, Alfie and Billy all came on as subs during the match. The early play was none too convincing and some tackles were being missed in midfield but Ethan charged down an early ball for Reuben to shoot just over and Harry did some good work on the left, whipping in some dangerous balls. Sam had to make a couple of saves – one an outstanding tip over from a powerful shot dead on target and destined surely for the net - and was calm, assured presence at the back, handling very well throughout the game. Gradually the Blues upped their game and began to pressurize their opponents. Stuart was a major presence on the right, playing confidently and he linked well with Oscar whose ball was sent in and Harry just got to it first to squeeze it home and give the Blues the lead – 1-0. Cam then put in a deft through ball and Ethan latched onto it and decisively doubled our lead at 2-0 and by now the Blues were dominant. Marcus and Harry combined excellently on the left and a great ball in to Alli was fired over but the third goal threatened to come at any time. It arrived and was the best of the three this evening when Ethan turned provider and his accurate cross into the Knebworth box was watched all the way by Marcus who side footed it in superbly – an outstanding goal from a skilful and intelligent player in great form at the moment – very well done.

3-0 at half time then but absolutely no complacency was allowed and the team talk centered on the need to still go out and win the game and develop, in Steve’s words, ‘good habits’ for future matches. The Blues now had a changed formation with Myles in defence, Matthew in the middle and Hanney and Billy leading the line. It was a half in truth in which the Blues toyed with their opponents and how it remained at 3-0 was a mystery. The Blues had chance after chance but missed out with the final finish. Shots rained down on the Knebworth goal and our opponents struggled to get out of their half. Billy unluckily hit the post, Jake fired over and Stuart had a header from a corner go close but we were almost over eager to score at times and crosses went too close to the goalkeeper or balls hit too long through and over. Pleasingly however, the Blues’ passing play returned in good style and it was great to see many fluent moves developing, cutting through the Knebworth defence. Some of the football was as good as we have seen this season and Tommy, Billy and Hanney had particularly good games, whilst Matthew enjoyed orchestrating things from the middle. It was like pinball at times but still the next goal wouldn’t come - heartening though to see both the football returning, along with the confidence of the whole team, everyone very comfortable on the ball. Somehow you felt that Knebworth were never going to score but they kept battling and their skilful, strong forward hit our crossbar with their best effort of the half.

A good win which gives our boys a much needed lift as they push up the league table and develop those ‘good habits’ in the lead up to the League Cup Final, now less than two weeks away. Nice to score three goals without our opponents scoring four in the light of recent matches! Best of all, it was really good to see the Blues’ passing football returning along with their self belief and confidence. Well done boys – back on song!

Biggleswade United Youth Blues…………………………….4 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….3

(Harry 2, Cam)

u11 blue

It was an uncanny repeat of Wednesday’s match as the Blues once again threw away a lead after a game of fluctuating fortunes which incredibly saw them again lose out by the odd goal in seven. As with Wymondley, an inability to defend a corner was the trigger for them to go to pieces and they allowed Biggleswade, playing some very attractive passing football, to dominate and grab the winner. The parallels with the last match extended to us again having a goal disallowed for offside and no luck with much of our finishing. We had beaten Biggleswade easily earlier in the season but they have improved and in their last league match of the season they probably just shaded it against a very out of sorts Blues team that is still struggling to consistently capture their best form.

We had a few players back today but some key personnel were again missing, most notably Sam in goal. The Blues lined up with Myles again deputizing, Alfie, Matthew, Stan and Tommy, Cam and Stuart, Jake and Marcus and Reuben and Billy up front – Harry, Hanney and Ethan began as subs but came on during the course of the game. The early play was even but we could see that Biggleswade were a passing, footballing team and they went ahead with a nice strike from the left which looped over Myles and the Blues knew that they were in for another tough battle. A good response followed with our boys using the width of the pitch well and from a quick throw in, Tommy showed quick thinking and did very well to cross the ball in and Cam got to it first to squeeze in the equaliser – 1-1. Only a fantastic double point blank save from their keeper prevented the Blues taking the lead as he saved from first Ethan and then Billy and as the half progressed, Biggleswade grew stronger and pressed us back. It was slightly against the run of play when we took the lead with a long ball forward which Harry ran onto and he bravely shrugged off two defenders closing him down on either side to finish expertly and make it 1-2. However the lead couldn’t be maintained as Biggleswade were awarded what looked like an undeserved penalty which was converted to make the scores level at 2-2 at half time.

Things were going positively for much of the second half and it suited the Blues playing into the wind as it held up the through balls and put an emphasis on accurate passing. The irony was however that it was Biggleswade who kept their passing going for longer and some of their moves cut through us with alarming ease and regularity. No sign of what was to eventually happen to begin with though as the Blues won more of the ball and looked again to spread it wide. Harry got his second to put us ahead again at 2-3 and was unlucky to have another ruled off for offside but Biggleswade continued to press and brought it back to 3-3 with a rifled header from, maddeningly once again, a corner that wasn’t attacked or cleared. It was Wednesday all over again and as our boys’ passing foundered, we just sensed that unbelievably, the Blues were about to be mugged once more. The killer blow came unluckily from a headed own goal after another ball that was launched into our box and which wasn’t cleared and soon after the ref blew his whistle – the final score 4-3 and a very disappointed set of Blues players and supporters for the second time this week.

Four successive defeats now but this poor run will end soon and our boys can only come out of this experience stronger and more determined. Bad runs are just that – runs, rather than one off matches and when everything clicks once again, disappointments like today will soon be forgotten. Well done to Biggleswade – one of the most attractive passing teams we have seen all season (almost Eagles like with some of their moves!) but well done to our boys too for their effort and attitude today.

Wymondley Park…………………………….4 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….3

(Alli, Jake, Marcus)

u11 blues

The Blues continue to experience post Cup blues in the league as they disappointingly lost to old rivals Wymondley in a roller coaster match in which they fought back from being behind to take the lead, only to lose it at the death. A day after the thrilling 4-4 tie between Chelsea and Liverpool in the Champions League, this game equally swung from one side to the other with goals almost being scored at will at one point and the Blues certainly should have got a draw out of this game at the very least and a win would have been more deserved.

The team was down to the bare bones this evening – an unusual kickoff time of 6.30pm to get through the fixture backlog – and at one point we thought only 10 boys would be available to play. Luckily 11 were mustered but it was an unusual set of formations to say the least, with us lining up with Myles in goal, Cam, Stan, Tommy and Billy across the back in defence, Alli, Jake, Ethan and Hanney in midfield and Marcus and Harry up front. We had the perfect start when Marcus set up Alli who scored to make it 0-1 after only a few minutes and then Marcus hit the bar. Our boys were playing well on the quick, firm surface, making good passes and using the flanks intelligently and our defence was looking solid with Cam striking the ball well and Tommy showing great poise and assured footwork. However then the Blues began to allow Wymondley more time on the ball and started to lose possession in midfield. A headed effort from close range was adjudged to have crossed the line to pull the home side level and then soon after they took the lead when a long speculative ball in was not cleared and bounced into the net –

2-1. This provoked a good reaction from the Blues who continued to look for the passes and Marcus was having an outstanding game – linking cleverly with Hanney, holding the ball up well, laying it off and forward and chasing it down with great energy – all the more remarkable since he had been unwell all week and was coughing and breathing heavily throughout the match. It was he who almost singlehandedly set up the Blues’ equaliser as he chased down a forward ball, took a quick throw in to Harry who in turn crossed it into the centre for Jake to finish high into the net – 2-2 and a fantastically created and finished goal – well done all involved. From a quick and long goal kick, Marcus then scored with a rifled left foot shot from long range to put the Blues back in the lead at 2-3 – well done young man on your quick thinking and a truly opportunistic and outstanding goal. It stayed at this at half time – a pulsating first half and the Blues well on top.

Unfortunately, the second half paled by comparison and the Blues, now with a changed formation, were nothing like the same team and in turn lost their shape, their creative passing, too much possession and ultimately therefore both the lead and the match. Although now playing with the increasingly strong wind, there was too much sitting back and as with the Stortford game, challenges were not made or were decisive enough. A foul on the edge of our penalty area resulted in a free kick which was excellently powered into the net by the Wymondley striker, giving Myles no chance, to draw the sides level again at 3-3 and now the home side had renewed confidence and pushed forward with menace, Having said this, we appeared to score two goals, only to have both disallowed for offside – one a superbly taken flick up and high volley by Ethan from a long way out involved no-one else so how it was ruled out was a mystery and this would have put us 4-2 up. Once again, shades of the Bishop’s Stortford match were apparent with our finishing touches missing and the opposition goalkeeper making some good saves. Our boys were looking tired and were unable to cope with the long balls hit forward by a capable but rather one dimensional Wymondley side. Myles performed heroically in goal, making several excellent saves and we had a few more half chances but nothing materialized. A warning was flashed with one of their corners that was cleared but only a few minutes later, another corner from the same side was powerfully headed in and Wymondley now had the lead at 4-3 which they kept for the remaining last few minutes.

A hugely deflating result and one that should never have happened. The long post match debrief said it all really but for the first half our boys played very well and looked good – their capitulation in the second half was all the more disappointing because of this and is very uncharacteristic of the Blues. It is now very important that we pick up some winning form in the matches leading up to the Royston Crow Cup Final – heads up boys, we know you can do it!

No.22 Sunday 5th April 2009 - Double Header

BSCFC Town…………………………….2 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….0

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….0 BSCFC Town…………………………….1

The Blues have got so far behind with their league matches due in the main to their Cup exploits, it is now necessary play two double headers in order to fit in all the games before the end of the season. Today was a tough assignment, playing Bishop’s Stortford who still have a chance of winning the title and the result of the two matches, both played away, was a double loss with the boys playing for most of the time nowhere near their best and nothing resembling the team that lifted the County Cup. With the league title out of the Blues’ reach, today felt like two games of experimentation, with many of our boys trying out new and unfamiliar positions and others who had played less this season having fuller runouts. There were some good things that Gary and Steve saw today and some excellent passages of play but in truth our boys were outmuscled by a hungry Stortford side that were out for maximum points to put the pressure on Buntingford and who seemed to want it more – too many of our side were below par and we seemed to shirk too many challenges and tackles and wasted good chances to score. Add to this no luck at all with passes and the final ball and it was two blank sheets and an overall bad day at the office.

In the first match, the match was even until Bishop’s Stortford scored from a free kick that was virtually unstoppable from close range and despite some good chances, our finishing was wayward and the Blues were certainly second best in the first half. What a transformation in the second half – with a different formation, the Blues showed immense creativity in midfield and absolutely battered their opponents who couldn’t get out of their half. This showed the true gulf between the two sides as Stortford essentially were hitting the ball long, albeit having one or two players who were strong and skilful on the ball. However despite having seven corners in a row at one point, the Blues couldn’t get the goal that they richly deserved and Ethan was particularly unlucky and had a rare off day with his finishing. The second goal for Bishop’s Stortford came from a breakway as our boys pushed forward looking for the equaliser and the final score of 2-0 was a harsh reflection on the overall game.

The second match saw much more even play from the beginning but as the Blues’ creativity fell back, they invited on Stortford pressure and when they scored from a corner that wasn’t cleared (again!), most of us felt that it just wasn’t going to be our day, a feeling confirmed when several really good chances that normally would be buried were scuffed, saved or went wide.

Never mind – many mitigating factors this morning - we all know that this wasn’t the real Blues overall today and anyone can have an off day. Think instead of much of the second half when our boys were a class above their strong opponents and some of their passing moves took the breath away. As this gets welded to their increasing strength, power and experience, it will be mouth watering to see what they can they achieve – and of course they are County Champions already this year, so not a bad season really! Well done boys!

No.21 Sunday 29th March 2009 Royston Crow League Cup – Semi Final

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2 Knebworth Youth Lions……………………….0

(Ethan, Cam)

u11blue

The Blues have another Cup Final date after a hard won victory over longstanding rivals Knebworth in what turned out to be a tense semi final match. Returning to action after the memorable events of last Sunday, only a stone’s throw away from our home pitches at the FA County Ground, our boys were forced to work hard for their win by a Knebworth side that have played very well in Cup matches this season, belying their position in the league and who were as up for the game today as they could possibly be, hoping to be the first team to defeat the newly crowned Hertfordshire County Champions. Ultimately the margin was comfortable enough and the Blues had the better of the play and deserved their win but their opponents put up a good performance, were competitive throughout and had their own chances to even up the game.

The Blues began with Sam in goal, a back line of Charley, Matthew, Oscar and Tommy, Cam, Alli, Stuart and Marcus and Ethan and Reuben up front as the strike force. We didn’t start particularly slowly but Knebworth were the more urgent and pushed our boys back from the kickoff. For the first few minutes, most of the play was in our half as they pushed forward and whilst our goal wasn’t in any real danger, attacks of our own were hard to get going. Gradually we lifted our play and the pace but it was still slightly against the run of play when the breakthrough was made – a lovely through ball from Matthew was passed on in turn from Cam to Stuart who then sent it wide on the right and Ethan, seemingly scoring at will these days, lofted in a powerful shot/ cross that soared over the Knebworth keeper and into the net for 1-0. Was that meant as a deliberate shot Ethan?!.. Knebworth were stung by this but continued to press forward and Sam made the first few of many well judged catches as he watched incoming efforts closely and handled with calm assurance. Alli and Cam were strong and combative in the middle and Phil used substitutions to good effect with Jake, Myles, Billy, Alfie and Hanney all coming on and doing their job well. Cam went just wide with a powerful shot but it was still only a narrow margin at half time.

In the second half it remained close and tense for much of the time – Knebworth were showing great tenacity and resilience and could easily have drawn level with a ball sent into our box but for a fantastic last ditch tackle by Alfie who singlehandedly preserved our lead. The Blues showed passages of their tremendous passing play from recent seasons as they showed conclusively how they have truly come to terms with 11 a side football but the second goal just wouldn’t come – too many offsides foiled our efforts - and our dogged opponents were hard to shake off. There was one great chance for Knebworth to draw level but Sam saved at point blank range and that was the moment of crisis over – from our corner, Stuart laid it out again to Jake and his cross was expertly headed in by Cam – how about that - a headed goal!! 2-0 just before the end and Knebworth’s resistance was finally broken and it was the Blues sailing towards an epic confrontation with Buntingford in the final in Royston.

Well done Knebworth on reaching this far and for playing so well and congratulations to our boys on their steely, determined performance today. You did exactly what you had to do and there was absolutely no resting on your laurels after last weeks’ triumph. If a side of this age group can be ‘professional’, you were it and once again you have made all your supporters very proud. Well done the Blues – Cup Kings!!

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….1 Welwyn Pegasus Royals……………………….0

After several years of trying, the Letchworth Garden City Eagles Under 11 Blues finally became the champions of Hertfordshire on a never to be forgotten occasion as they defeated Welwyn Pegasus Royals 1-0 in a tense County Cup Final. On a brilliant day, and not just because of the warm sunshine which bathed the FA County Ground this Sunday morning, our magnificent group of players put up the performance of their lives to beat the current leaders of a very strong league and a side that had previously only lost one match this season. Our boys played with such commitment and determination not to get beaten, it was truly fantastic to witness and in lifting the trophy, there was a sense that they were reaping their reward. Over the past few seasons, those witnessing the Eagles play have had the strong feeling that few teams, if any of this age group in Hertfordshire have been as good at passing and overall teamwork and yet they have fallen in this competition after some mighty performances that have promised so much. Today wasthe day when it all came right and the moment of victory and its aftermath were both sweet indeed for all the Blues and their enthusiastic fans thronging the County Ground stand.

From the beginning of the day, the whole occasion was memorable one for all involved. The boys, in their smart new personalized tracksuits, whisked away into proper changing rooms, having their details and exploits listed in the souvenir programme (superb pen portraits of each player Phil!), coming out of the tunnel and being announced individually to the crowd and gazing into the crowd in the stand with scarcely disguised excitement and pleasure. Their supporters, gradually swelling in number as they packed out the seats on the halfway line, roaring their approval at the appearance of our team (“Eeegalsssss..”), waving their Yellow flags enthusiastically and having a million and one conversations as they soaked in the atmosphere of the buildup to the big match – there was even a small scale Mexican Wave! It was great to see so many extended family members there, along with other friends and players of L.G.C.E. and nerves and excited anticipation jostled in equal measure as the kickoff time of 10.30am drew near. Welwyn Pegasus looked strong and determined, their players and supporters not used to losing and we could only speculate on how these two titans would match up as they approached kickoff – the remaining two teams in the competition out of a massive initial entry of 142!

u11blue

The Blues lined up with Sam in goal, a defensive back four of Oscar, Charley, Matthew and Tommy, Stan, Cam, Stuart and Harry across the middle and Reuben and Ethan up front – on the bench were Marcus, Alfie, Jake, Myles and Luke. Our boys started really well – how important it is to settle quickly and take control of the game – and immediately took the play to Welwyn by pushing forward. They didn’t let their opponents settle and the first impressions settled many of the nerves in the stand for we had the better of the passing and were using the wide open spaces of the pitch to good effect. Welwyn then came more into the game and began to launch balls forward but the Blues were definitely having more of the possession and were creating more openings. What was impressive was how focused and determined each of our boys was – Cam and Stuart battled strongly in the middle to win tackles and the Blues began to spread the ball out wide for Harry to push up the line and Ethan to run onto down the centre. Chances were getting closer and then, after 20 minutes, the crucial opening came as we had a corner and in the following scramble in the Welwyn box, Harry drove the ball low and hard into the net with his right foot to give the Blues a deserved 1-0 lead. Pandemonium in the stand, celebration on the pitch and now something to hold onto. The rest of the first half unfolded with more even play and Welwyn pushed forward for the equaliser but Sam didn’t really have too many saves to make. Our boys continued to pass the ball and were strong in the tackle and the defence was superb - nullifying any threat and everyone making the right decision by clearing the ball when danger threatened. It was vital not to concede before half time and despite a couple of scares as the long ball was launched in from free kicks, the score remained at a thoroughly deserved 1-0 at the break.

The second half was pulsating and tense but our boys were magnificent throughout. Welwyn are a very good side – one can see how they will probably win their league – and they upped their game and had us on the back foot for extended periods but our defensive back line never wavered and were quite superb, the bedrock of our victory today. Time after time they closed down attackers, cleared dangers and put the ball out if necessary. Welwyn’s dangerous forwards were completely shutout and when they did get a sniff at goal, Sam came out in usual confident fashion to clear his lines. One time when a Welwyn forward did get in the clear, his shot was from too far out and lacked power and went safely into Sam’s arms and our excellent keeper was vigilant too with long and high balls coming in on goal, watching the flight of the ball closely and handling assuredly. After being under some pressure, the Blues came back at Welwyn as the second half progressed and we created spaces as play became stretched and players tired. Jake and Harry went very close to extending our lead but we had a heart stopping moment at our end too as a shot flashed across our goal and wide – in the stand for a second it looked like it had gone in. Every member of the Blues’ squad made vital contributions to the game as all players got on as the rotation policy was used to good effect. Injury time seemed to go on for an eternity but at last, as fingernails had disappeared and we were starting on fingers, the referee blew his whistle and our boys had won the cup!

u11blue

Sam – a terrific display again today – sure and safe handling and giving so much confidence to the defence in front of you, knowing that you are always alert to any possible dangers.

Oscar – you gave a fantastic defensive display, with well timed, determined tackles and looking to release balls forward.

Charley – your was a captain’s performance full of strength and power and you were a rock in the centre.

Matthew – the other towering central defensive pillar - you timed your tackles to perfection and showed your usual poise and balance.

Tommy – outstanding on the left in defence – cool and calm, no Welwyn forward could get past you at any time.

Cam – winning so many tackles in the middle and you had such great power with corners and passes spreading the ball wide.

Harry – you tormented the Weywn back line with your thrusts down the line and by being a focal point for balls spread wide. You proved your value as a goal scorer and your versatility by scoring with your right!

Stan – you were a powerful and thrusting presence in the middle today.

Stuart – your energy and commitment thrusting down the centre set the tone for the whole team today.

Reuben – you were a constant threat up front today, showing 100% effort and commitment and leading the line so well.

Ethan – sharp and hungry and ready to run onto any ball passed forward. No goals today but some lovely touches and selfless movements which were as important to the team.

Marcus – your movement and awareness today was possibly the best ever – one curling defence splitting pass for Harry was genuinely world class.

Alfie – you were a vital piece of the Blues’ jigsaw when you came on – you let no-one pass you and made some excellent passes.

Myles – You slotted into the team smoothly and made some vital interceptions to deny the opposition space.

Hanney – Welwyn couldn’t keep up with your speed of movement and you made some superb passes spreading the ball wide.

Jake – you carried your excellent recent form into the biggest match of the season and almost set up a second goal for the Blues.

Billy and Alistair – you unluckily didn’t play today but both of you contributed to the team’s success in the Cup by making important contributions in earlier rounds.

Congratulations to each and every one of the boys for their superb performance today. The Blues can play better in terms of goal creation and scoring but what couldn’t have been improved today was their heart, commitment and determination which together created the mindset that they refused to be defeated. Well done to Welwyn Pegasus Royals who are a very good side and who have done so well to get to the final and the match was credit to Under 11s football. The match too was played in an excellent spirit, with generosity shown in both victory and defeat and in some cynical and unsavoury times for football, this was heartening to see.

Congratulations and thanks too to Phil, Steve and Gary for all their hard work and dedication which came to fruition so gloriously today – you richly deserve to enjoy this achievement which is quite something in our boys’ first season at 11 a side.

Very well done boys – it was huge pleasure and privilege to be there – what a day!

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2 Fairlands Youth……………………….2

(Cam,Ethan)

U11 blue

Yesterday in the Premier League, Liverpool stunned the title favourites Manchester United with an emphatic and wide margin win at Old Trafford. Today, in the bright spring sunshine at Pixmore, as if to underline the fact that no contest should ever be seen as a foregone conclusion, the Blues could only draw against a Fairlands side that they had comfortably beaten in their first match of the season. This was one of the most disappointing matches of the campaign for the Blues who were only near their best in patches and couldn’t get clear of their tigerish opponents despite twice taking the lead and two sloppy goals conceded threw away the three points. Not the ideal way to go into the big match next Sunday but that will be a totally different situation and the Blues undoubtedly will raise their game for this (and will need to!)

The Blues lined up with a less than usual formation with several players in unusual positions and others not available to play. A generally tepid and forgettable first half saw our boys creating most of the chances and putting pressure on Fairlands but moves broke down in the crowded penalty area and efforts went wide or just over. There were glimpses of good passing and Reuben and Billy led the line well, with Cam and Matthew creating from the middle and Harry dangerous down the wing. One move of class gave the Blues the lead – Reuben, with his back to goal cleverly laid it back to Cam who drove it low and hard into the net for 1-0. The lead was deserved for all the Blues’ possession, but it was never comfortable viewing after that and Fairlands drew level when they powered in a header from a corner that was dangerously whipped in - not for the first time, a failure to attack and clear the ball from a set piece had cost us dear. It remained an unfulfilling 1-1 at half time.

The second half unfolded in much the same way – the Blues created some good moves, increased their level of possession and put considerable pressure on the Fairlands goal but found it hard to break through. Uncharacteristically, they looked for the long ball forward and over the top but Hanney, Harry and Marcus showed good overlapping passing play down the left flank. Sam was not too troubled but needed to come out and clear balls that were put through by the opposition. Ethan was showing his predatory form of recent weeks and finished off an excellent passing move as he ran through onto an exquisite pass and with composure rifled the ball into the Fairlands net to make it 2-1 and this we all hoped would seal the win. However, our boys then seemed to lose their shape and the width disappeared from their game. They held onto the ball for too long without finding the pass, attacks foundered down the centre and several chances to extend the lead went begging. This then combined with another error, this time a slip at the back in our defence gave Fairlands two on one and their attacker then slid the ball past a helpless Sam to draw the scores level at 2-2. There wasn’t time for much more action and the match finished with our opponents jubilant and a feeling of great disappointment amongst our players, management and supporters that we had surrendered a game that we should have had won much earlier.

A mediocre match in truth and not the performance that we had hoped for or expected. Any faint hope of challenging for the league title has also surely gone with this result today. However, every team can have an off day (ask Man Utd!) and credit to Fairlands (like Liverpool) for showing resolution and resilience and for taking full advantage of a below par Eagles side today. We have no doubt that our fantastic players will continue to do us proud next week in the very different setting of the County Cup Final and the very best of luck to each and every one of you boys – COME ON THE BLUES!!

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2 Ashwell Academicals……………………….1

(Ethan, Jake)

u11 blues

With postponed matches and their Cup exploits, the Blues have had a severely disrupted Royston Crow programme and in what was only their fourth home league game and their first in total for three months, they edged past their old village rivals with a below par, rusty performance but one that was still good enough to secure an important three points to help their position in the table. It wasn’t a classic by any means but our boys dug in after a slow start and showed an excellent attitude to combat both the conditions and determined opposition.

Ashwell have always been a good footballing side and arrived this morning after some excellent recent results which has got their season back on track after a poor start. On an initially sunny but then overcast day, with a chilly wind that got stronger as the match went on, the Blues lined up with Sam in goal, Charley, Stan, Oscar and Hanney across the back, Jake, Cam, Matthew and Alli in the midfield and Billy and Ethan up front – Reuben, Stuart and Harry began today as subs. The Blues were very slow to get going and despite playing with the wind and forcing several early corners, allowed Ashwell too much time on the ball and too often let the ball bounce without making the required challenges or headers. Billy and Jake combined smoothly for Jake to shoot just wide and Matthew spread the ball well and created moves from midfield, but our boys couldn’t get behind the solid Ashwell defenders and moves too often broke down. Charley picked up a hand injury, which meant that Matthew had to drop back in defence and we therefore lost some of our creativity and Ashwell were definitely having the best of it – hitting the bar with a great shot before taking the lead when their forward rounded Sam and fired the ball into the net – 0-1. In challenging for the ball, Sam was injured and Reuben had to come on and (eventually) donned the goalkeeping gloves and for a moment, it looked like things were turning against us in a major way. However it was then that our boys seemed to wake up and, stung into action, they played some much improved football for the latter part of the first half and their excellent response saw them first draw level and then take the lead. Stuart, who had come on, made a couple of threatening and thrusting moves forward and then, as we pressed forward, Ethan latched onto a measured through ball and finished clinically with a half volley to score the equaliser – 1-1. Alli was orchestrating things well from the middle and winning battles for the ball and as the half neared its end, he had a shot in the box that was palmed away by the Ashwell keeper but only into the path of Jake who powered it into the gaping net to make it 2-1. Jake was carrying on his good form from last week and could have had another but just shot wide and half time arrived with the Blues having recovered from the shock of going behind and deservedly now in front.

Make the challenges and close down possible shots from the opposition, spread the ball wide and stick to passing play were the half time messages and all were followed to the letter by the Blues in the second half. The windy conditions played havoc with the match in truth and neither side was able to put together too many sustained passages of fluent play – instead the action was disjointed and the ball spent a lot of time in the air and going out of play down the lines. There were moments of good passing from the Blues and attacks which threatened but equally we had to be alert to the long balls launched forward as Ashwell looked to play with the help of the strong wind. However our boys stood firm, defended excellently, heading away solidly now and took no chances when danger threatened – the ‘percentages game’ as Alan Hansen would call it! There were a couple of moments when an equalising goal came close – from some whipped in, dangerous corners and lofted free kicks, but in the end, the Blues emerged as deserved and hard fought 2-1 winners.

Nowhere near their best but still good enough this morning and a lesson reinforced about the need to start well and not put themselves under undue pressure. The Blues continue to compete on all fronts in this busy season and their attitude and response today were both exemplary. Well done boys!

No.17 Sunday 1 st March 2009 - Royston Crow League Cup – Quarter Final

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….4 Bedwell Rangers Reds……………………….2

(Ethan 3, Reuben )

u11 blues

A year ago almost to the day, the Blues had a hard fought win over Bedwell Rangers when they took some time to get their superiority reflected by the goal margin and it was a similar story this afternoon as eventually they came good and won their way through to the last four of the Royston Crow League Cup. After a scrappy first half, when the Blues were second best to the current Second Division leaders, playing like a stuttering car, and lucky to still be at 0-0, they finally got going and took the lead, only to be pegged back and then needed extra time to see off their tough opponents. This was a match which showed conclusively how no opposition should be underestimated and how important it is to be on your game right from the start.

On a chilly Sunday afternoon, playing on our pitch which was not in too bad a condition, the Blues began with Sam in goal, Myles, Matthew, Stan and Tommy in defence, Billy, Alli, Stuart and Harry across the middle and Jake and Marcus up front. Our early play was promising – Marcus went close with a shot and we forced two corners. Sam continued his excellent form of recent weeks, with safe and solid handling and anticipation of the ball and the Blues looked to switch the play across the pitch. However, Bedwell soon showed that they hadn’t come to roll over and were strong and direct, looking for the ball forward and forcing our boys back. Most of their attacks were focused on their strong and skilful centre forward but fortunately for us, he was not sufficiently supported and kept the ball too long, allowing our defence to close him down and then clear the danger. Our passes were not coming off and even refreshing the team with subs Oscar, Reuben and Hanney couldn’t create clearcut chances – their keeper didn’t have a save to make and Sam was definitely the busier of the two. One notable feature of our boys this morning was the number of accurate headers that were made in intercepting the ball, which was good too see.

A below par first half for us saw us in truth lucky to still be level against a team which were really up for causing an upset and had come to play football. The message was to get our normal passing going and create and take chances and our play was certainly raised as the second half began – it was all action from now on. The Blues began to force Bedwell back into their area and when Ethan was brought down , he drilled the penalty low and hard into their net to make it 1-0 and give everyone a huge amount of relief. However, in this competitive, fluctuating match, Bedwell weren’t ready to go under and got an equaliser when they shot home after a corner through a crowded box of bodies, past an unsighted Sam who still nearly got to the ball. 1-1 then, everything back in the balance and one slip would see either side go out. The Blues finished full time strongly – Reuben hit the bar, but it came to the tense atmosphere of extra time – 15 minutes each way. Now the Blues finally showed their class and two passing moves of quality gave us the much needed buffer of a two goal lead. Firstly Jake, showing outstanding skill and having his best game of the season, picked up a pass from Alli on the right and beat his man before crossing for Ethan to side foot the ball into the net – 2-1. A few minutes later, on the other wing, a flowing passing move from Hanney to Reuben to Harry led to Ethan meeting the cross and he made no mistake – 3-1 in a instant and claiming an excellent hat trick. Now the Blues had a degree of comfort and were certainly dominating the first period of extra time. Yet there was another twist – Bedwell this time finally broke through the middle, beating our defence and their forward confidently shot home – 3-2. Suddenly it was uncomfortable viewing again on the touchline and only when Marcus got to the byeline and pulled the ball back for Reuben to calmly clip it into the net to make it 4-2 just before the end could any of us feel anywhere near relaxed and only now was the gallant Bedwell side finally subdued.

A very exciting match, certainly from the second half onwards, which saw alternating periods of pressure, competitive play, six goals and the result in doubt for a large part of the time. Nothing like the prospect of a potential cup upset to stir the blood and certainly the Blues had a fright and needed to battle today. Credit to Bedwell – surely we will be meeting them in Division 1 next season. Ultimately a really gutsy performance by our boys, with flashes of great play, with everyone digging in and playing their part and Jake and Myles (in defence – winning everything) especially outstanding and both winning Phil’s Man of the Match Award. Will it be a double Cup celebration this year perhaps?.. Very well done boys.

No.16 Sunday 22nd February 2009  Herts County Cup U11 – Semi Final

Ware Youth Blues…………………..1 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….2

Ethan, Charley (pen)

u11 blues

It was the Blues versus the Blues this morning as the several times postponed County Cup semi final took place in chilly conditions in Ware and the result was a hard fought but ultimately deserved victory for the Eagles who thus will make their first appearance in the final of Hertfordshire’s premier Under 11 competition on March 22 nd in Letchworth. On a grey morning, the match was lit up by two incisive passages of play which led to the Eagles taking a two goal lead in the first half but Ware Youth came back into the match to make it 2-1. Both sides then alternately pushed forward with their attacks and defended stoutly in a game that was physical and skilful and both teams deserve credit for the standard of football and commitment that they showed.

There was almost a full squad to choose from today, with only Myles and Tommy missing. This was just as well, for the pitch and competitive nature of the match led to a series of injuries and every player was needed - however the resulting enforced substitutions and those that took place due to normal rotation didn’t help the continuity and smoothness of our Blues’ play, particularly in the second half. The first half however was a different matter though and was hard to fault. Lining up with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Hanney in a defensive back four, Oscar, Alli, Cam and Harry across the middle and Reuben and Ethan leading the line up front, the Blues played against the strengthening wind and slight slope but soon settled to their game and took the play to their opponents. The first few minutes saw equal possession and pressure from both sides with no real chances but then, after only a few minutes, from a throw in, Reuben slid through a perfect pass for Ethan to run onto and he finished lethally, drilling the ball low into the Ware net for 0-1 and the ideal start. Ware responded well, with their players showing good strength and skill on the ball, but our defence held firm and the back four made the right decision every time, either playing the ball and passing their way out of danger or clearing it if necessary – Sam too was already having an excellent game, showing alertness and smart handling and coming out to clear when called upon. Our passing saw the ball being moved smartly across the pitch and down the flanks, Reuben and Ethan linked well and Harry began to play a significant part in the game as he thrusted forward down the left, causing the Ware defenders all kinds of problems. One particularly forceful and decisive run into the box saw him clattered to the ground and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Charley powered the ball home to make it 0-2 and give the Eagles a margin that their play and positive attitude fully deserved. Marcus, Stuart, Billy, Stan and Jake all came on and played their part but the injuries began to pile up too – Stuart unfortunately had to go off with a knee injury soon after entering the action. Billy was very unlucky not to win a second penalty as he appeared to be brought down when through on goal and colliding with the valiant Ware keeper. Then we had to withstand several dangerous corners and free kicks from Ware as they hit the ball long and powerfully as they raised their game towards the end of the half - once again however our defence was magnificent in clearing all the dangers. Half time therefore arrived with a great two goal lead and something to really hold onto.

u11 blues

Phil and Steve impressed on our boys how important it was to continue to work hard and match the effort of Ware who would be coming at us determinedly at the beginning of the second half – also the need to be strong in the tackles and interceptions. The message was certainly needed for our opponents did exactly that. Despite now having the breeze and slope in our favour, it was Ware who began the half more strongly and put us under pressure, picking up from how they finished the first 30 minutes and playing the same kind of game as our close rivals Buntingford, who had been eliminated by Ware in the previous round. Our defenders made some outstanding tackles to deny their attackers and once again Sam was faultless with his handling. Our boys didn’t play as well as in the first half or anywhere near as well as we can do, too often missing tackles and not closing down in midfield and this allowed Ware to launch their long balls forward over the top, putting us on the back foot. Too often, our passing play deserted us and we were sucked into playing things long ourselves which is obviously not our boys’ game and balls forward were overhit in the strengthening wind, rolling onto their keeper.

As the half progressed however, our boys came back into things and evened out the play and pressure – several corners were forced and one or two scrambles in the box almost resulted in goal chances – Harry had one chance and a shot when in the clear but this was well saved. Alli, Oscar and Cam battled well in midfield and Marcus looked for every opportunity to turn his defenders whilst there were some glimpses of the characteristic slick Blues’ passing game. Tension was racked up when Ware won and converted a penalty to make it 1-2 after an unlucky and accidental handball but the Blues were also denied what looked like a penalty when Reuben was felled when running with purpose into the Ware penalty area. Both goalkeepers had excellent games and overall, the respective defences were on top, denying the attackers many goal chances and forming two solid back lines.

The final whistle signaled a famous victory for the Eagles but, in the interests of objectivity, this was a match where both sides were evenly matched and the margin of victory was a narrow one. Well done to Ware on reaching this stage and for giving us such sterling competition and many congratulations to all our boys on their magnificent achievement. For the second year running the Royston Crow league has a finalist at the Hertfordshire FA County Ground and this is some achievement in our boys’ first season at 11 a side. It was a pleasure and privilege to watch you this morning – very well done boys and roll on the final!!

No.15 Sunday 1st February 2009 - Royston Crow League Cup

Stotfold Juniors…………………..1 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….5

(Harry, Cam, Ethan, Jake pen, Charley pen)

u11 blue

After very little football in recent weeks due to the variety of poor weather conditions, the Blues finally got to play this morning and comfortably defeated Stotfold Juniors in bitterly cold conditions to advance to the next round of the Royston Crow League Cup. Their Division 2 opponents made them work hard in the second half but by then there was already a four goal margin and the Blues’ superior play and class had put them in an unassailable position.

The wind was biting from the moment of arrival in Stotfold and keeping warm before kick off was the first priority. At least the match could take place – snow showers were threatening to arrive later in the day and the pitch could have been frozen first thing. With a strong squad this morning, the Blues lined up 4-4-1-1, with Sam in goal, Tommy, Matthew, Stan and Myles across the back, Oscar, Jake (captain today), Cam and Hanney in the middle and Reuben just behind Harry who was up front – Charley, Marcus and Ethan started as subs.

The Blues went on the attack from the start and immediately had a chance that just went wide as they pushed forward and this set the tone for the whole first half. Stotfold were unable to get out of their half as the Blues carved out chance after chance as they strung passes together and moved the ball sweetly across the pitch and down the wings. However despite creating umpteen opportunities, the goal wouldn’t come and somehow Stotfold survived – credit to their keeper who made some excellent saves when we looked certain to score. There were some incredible misses when the goal was gaping but the score remained at 0-0 until two corners from Hanney in quick succession changed the game. The first corner was curled in with the wind and pushed in by Harry to make it 1-0 and then the second came out to the edge of the box and Cam powered it home impressively. 2-0 and no more than the Blues deserved and when Ethan flicked the ball home from an acute angle to make it 3-0, the match was now only the Blues’ to lose. Cam was clipped going through on goal and Jake put away the penalty with a sweet shot to make it 4-0 and half time arrived with an excellent scoreline, reflecting some very good passages of play.

It would have been easy for Stotfold’s heads to have dropped but to their great credit, they made a real fight of it in the second half and, aided by the now very strong wind, they created chances of their own and gave Sam more to do in the first few minutes of the restart than he had had for the whole of the first half. The play was much more even and although our boys still pushed forward, they didn’t manage to get the passes and interplay going as smoothly as before. We moved people around to different positions, with Tommy and Matthew playing further forward but our defence was never in too much danger, with Stan being very solid and dominating and Cam too having an excellent controlled game in the middle. Charley was fouled and scored the penalty himself to make it 5-0 but Stotfold got one back from a corner to reduce the margin to 5-1 and they deserved this for their spirit and determination in the second half.

A comfortable victory, with the Blues on their game from the start and showing great hunger and desire this morning. Certainly something to warm us all up on the coldest of winter mornings – well done boys!

The Blues finally got to play their twice postponed County Cup Quarter Final match against John Warner Youth and, on a weekend of last minute winners in the Premiership, scored the winner right at the death to deservedly get through to the last four in the competition. A narrow margin of victory, but they were by far the best side on the day, playing the classier football on a dreadfully heavy pitch which cut up badly and they went close with several chances before getting the winning goal. John Warner were spirited opponents who were strong in the tackle and made life hard for our boys and both sides deserve credit for playing so well on a difficult surface that suited no-one.

The Blues lined up with the formation that had served them so well in the previous round with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Cam and Alli in the middle, Oscar on the right and Harry on the left – Ethan and Marcus led the line up front and Reuben, Jake, Stuart and Hanney began as subs. Our boys started brightly and immediately took the play to their opponents – within the first two minutes Marcus clipped the post with a shot and then a superb piece of skill by Ethan  on the right saw him flick it past the defender and hit a rocket that just went wide. Much of the early play was squeezed down the flanks but the Blues looked to spread the ball wide across the pitch and run into the John Warner half. Passing football was becoming increasingly difficult on the muddy pitch but the Blues continued to look for each other, with the final ball however often just going missing. Another consequence of the pitch was the disruption to the flow of the play due to regular substitutions caused by injuries – Oscar was replaced by Stuart (who himself then had to go off with Jake taking his place) and Marcus then limped off after a heavy challenge, to be replaced by Reuben. The Blues continued to play the better football, but neat passes through the middle were increasingly difficult, whilst John Warner kept looking for the ball forward, over the top. The lively Ethan set up Reuben for a great shot that was well saved by their keeper and we generally looked very solid in defence – Sam had very little to do. Towards the end of the first half, a renewed surge by our opponents – trying to capitalize on the last few minutes playing with the slope and the wind – saw us being pushed back more but we held firm and some very calm, assured play and distribution kept the dangers to a minimum. Set pieces – free kicks and corners – were some of the best chances to score, with the ball so difficult to hit cleanly in normal play, but these came to nothing on either side and both defences held firm.

Phil and Steve’s half time talk stressed the need to not overdo things and try and walk the ball through the centre – our boys were again told that it was important to use the width of the pitch and the better surface wide. With renewed vigour and now playing with the wind and the slope, the Blues immediately took this to heart and Hanney, now on, tormented the opposition as he overlapped on the left time after time and on the right, we launched balls forward, looking for them to be crossed in. The second half saw sustained pressure from the Blues as they carved out a series of good chances but the finishing touch was missing and to their credit, the John Warner defence repeatedly blocked our attacks and were strong in the tackle in the middle – there were some firm but fair challenges on the pitch today which showed the commitment of both sides. Frantic scrambles in the opposition penalty box ended with shots on goal but their keeper made some good saves and denied our boys the goal that looked sure to be coming – Reuben had the best chance but his effort was saved and then Ethan lifted over his shot from close range. Potentially dangerous free kicks went over and once again, superb corners were not converted as they flashed across the opposition goal.

John Warner came back into the game as the half went on – a couple of times they outnumbered us at the back and there were some brilliant last ditch saving tackles from Charley, whilst Sam was alert and several times came out to clear possible dangers. The game went from end to end, but with the Blues having most of the pressure and the chances, on the touchline we were wondering if it was going to be one of ‘those’ games (Royston Celtic comes to mind!) and when our opponents were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes to go after their attacker was caught, we feared the worst. However Sam saved it with the minimum fuss as it came at him straight on and we were all able to breathe again! Still our goal wouldn’t come however but then, with hardly any time left, a passing move of sheer class led to the breakthrough – Alli passed it to Harry whose one two with Marcus saw him hit a high ball towards goal and it deceived the valiant John Warner keeper and looped over him and into the net – Reuben followed up for good measure but will probably have difficulty claiming the goal! 1-0 and great celebrations and relief all round and it was fitting that on such an awful surface today, which made passing so difficult, it had been a slick, incisive move of real quality which had set up the goal.

The final whistle was not long in coming and this tremendous win and performance, in such adverse conditions, was a great tribute to all of our boys today. Now in the last four in Hertfordshire, surely anything can now happen and today was all about keeping going for the full hour, working hard right up to the final whistle. Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and the Under 11 Eagles Blues – all late late winners this weekend and not a bad group of teams to be part of!!

Very well done boys today from all of your families and supporters – a memorable first match of 2009 and a fantastic attitude and commitment from you all.

u11 blues

The Blues finally got to play their twice postponed County Cup match against Stevenage and immediately picked up their form from the victory against Buntingford with a performance that was equally as commanding and decisive, as they advanced to the quarter finals for the second year running. This was a very satisfying and ultimately enjoyable win, against skilful opponents and the Blues showed that after a somewhat stuttering start to this season, they now appear to have wised up and both truly look and play like an 11 a side team.

On a sunny, breezy morning and on a pitch that was reasonable, if inclined to be a bit sticky in the middle, the Blues lined up with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Harry, Hanney, Cam and Oscar and Stuart and Marcus up front – a smaller than usual squad today saw Billy and Myles starting as subs. Much of the early play was scrappy, with the ball in the air and in and out of play down one wing and neither goalkeeper was called into action. Charley fired in a free kick but it came to nothing and once again we whipped in some dangerous balls from corners but no one got on the end of them. Slowly but surely, the Blues passing began to pick up - Harry, Marcus and Stuart combined very well with quick interplay and Hanney was a real threat as he pushed forward with menace down the flank. Our back four looked completely solid and although Stevenage pushed forward several times into our half, their threats didn’t look dangerous, so assured were our defenders. However the Blues too were having trouble breaking through the Stevenage defence – Marcus was very lively and showed great skill but found himself outnumbered in the middle. The first goal was urgently needed to reflect the Blues’ superiority and it came when Tommy lifted in a high looping ball from the left which deceived the Stevenage keeper and, after a fumble, was bundled in by Harry – 1-0. A great start but it wasn’t plain sailing for the rest of the half as Stevenage responded well to going behind and pushed forward themselves – a dangerous free kick right on the edge of our area could easily have found the net but was watched all the way and saved assuredly by Sam, whose alertness and handling throughout the game today was superb. Billy came on to give fresh energy and the Blues saw out the first half comfortably, ensuring that they didn’t give away their well earned lead.

The second half had three things in our favour – the slope, the wind and the sun which was now shining directly into the faces of the Stevenage defence and keeper. Right from the restart, the Blues went on the attack and Marcus was almost through on goal. Back came Stevenage however and for a brief period they held the upper hand and had some shots on our goal. However once again, on the touchline, there was a quiet confidence that our back line wouldn’t let us down; Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy, this was the best you have played as a unit all season – a mature and totally confident display – outstanding, terrifically well done boys.

Higher up the pitch. Oscar and Cam were winning vital balls and linking up play very effectively. Stuart too was having his best and most effective game of the season as his power and skill punched holes in the Stevenage defence. It was he who put through an exquisite ball – the best of the match – to Harry who squeezed it in the corner with his right foot to make it 2-0 and give the Blues the proverbial breathing space. Harry then completed his hat trick when he hooked the ball in after a corner to ensure that the Blues would be going through to the last eight. Myles came on up front and almost scored in the last few minutes and Harry again had a good chance to add to his scoring record when through on goal but his shot was well saved. Right to the end, the Blues kept up their standard of play and just before the final whistle, Marcus, Stuart and Harry combined with a fantastic set of passes that deserved a goal at the end. The Blues thus saw out the match totally in command and ultimately as very comfortable winners.

Very well done today boys – a performance that made us all extremely proud as parents and supporters. Stevenage are a well drilled, good footballing side but were decisively beaten and the improvement shown in recent matches and the momentum of the side continues. All over the pitch, our boys played well individually but even better as a team and their confidence is high, with goals flowing and another clean sheet being kept. Now into the quarter finals of the County Cup, we are the only team from the same stage last year which has repeated the feat, which is another great tribute to our boys - now we hope we can go further!

Wishing all of the Blues and their supporters a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you boys for all the memorable moments you have given us in 2008 and we look forward to many more of the same in 2009!

Buntingford Cougars Blues…………………..0 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….1

(Charley pen)

Outstanding is the only way to describe the performance and result this wet Sunday afternoon as the Blues put up their best performance of the season in deservedly beating the league leaders on their own ground. Buntingford are a strong, powerful side with good players and had won all of their games to date but they had no answer to the Blues who really clicked for the first time this season. We passed the ball around beautifully on a good surface and matched our opponents for determination and grit. Whether this turns out to be the game in which our boys finally turned the corner in adjusting to the demands of 11 a side only time will tell but it confirms that all the positive signs in the game of two weeks ago (report no.10) were indeed encouraging and it looks as if the Blues are a threat to all once again.

Everyone played for each other today and the Blues lined up with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Alli, Oscar, Harry and Cam and Ethan and Marcus up front. Reuben, Hanney, Billy and Stan started as subs but all played a part in the victory and today the rotation of players was not a problem with nothing disturbing the flow of the teamwork of our boys.

The Blues began really well – immediately on their game and one could sense a determination to take the fight to Buntingford and put right the previous league defeat. From the kickoff the passing was slick and accurate – the Blues tore through their opponents’ midfield and defence and put them on the back foot. Ethan and Marcus combined well up front and had several attempts on goal and Oscar was very lively, continuing his fine weekend form in seeing a lot of the ball and launching moves forward. Harry pushed on down the wing, taking on his man and Cam had the first real shot of note as the Blues also forced three corners. Alli also was having his best game of the season as he won balls and made vital interceptions in midfield. In a repeat of the home match, our boys were well on top without getting the goal their superiority deserved and although the slight breeze was in our favour, this was much better, high quality football that we were seeing which must have been worrying and impressing the Buntingford supporters in equal measure. Ethan went close with a shot but Reuben had the best chance as he blasted just wide after yet another chance had been created.

Buntingford came more into the match as the first half unfolded and in the main hit it long, looking for the ball over the top. We had to be alert to dangerous through balls but Matthew and Tommy were rocks in defence, Alfie covered possible dangers on the left and Charley’s power game was ideally suited to today’s conditions and opponents. Sam handled well and for once we didn’t concede a soft goal, although again there was a heart stopping moment with a ball from a corner that wasn’t cleared properly – this time however we rode our luck!

Phil and Steve were fulsome in their praise for the whole team at half time and if ever there was a collective will to win a match you could sense it amongst our boys at this point. Despite playing against the wind as the second half began, it was this that seeped into every part of their play. The passing moves continued, as did the fierce tackling and interceptions and as Buntingford raised their game and racked up the pressure with their key players having storming games, so our defence rose to the challenge and snuffed out the dangers. Corners now were cleared properly and the width of the pitch was used to full effect, with our boys holding up the ball well and supporting each other, relieving pressure on our own defence. Billy and Hanney came on and fitted seamlessly into the pattern of play and throughout the side there was concentration and effort in abundance. All of this however would have been in vain had it not been for an incredible, out of this world save from Sam who tipped a vicious shot over the bar when a goal could so easily (and unjustly) gone against us. Definitely a leading contender for save of the season – brilliant work Sam.

It looked like a draw was going to be the final result which in the circumstances would have felt like a disappointment but when Cam was fouled in the box just before the end, Charley decisively scored the penalty (after a retake – well done on keeping your nerve!) which sent the excitement levels rocketing. There wasn’t time for much more play after the restart and the Blues were thus able to celebrate a famous victory over a very good team that does not lose often and which does so much to put their season back on track. Most pleasingly, although only 1-0, this win was decisive and comprehensive, achieved by brilliant football and a team ethic that has been the Eagles’ trademark over recent seasons.

Well done boys – heroes each and every one of you. It was a pleasure to be there today.

Royston Crow League Cup – 1 st Round

Buntingford Cougars Stripes…………………..0 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….7

(Billy 2, Matthew 2, Oscar, Reuben, Harry)

Blues

On a freezing cold day, the League Cup match went ahead, surprisingly, after earlier rain and sleet, on the pitch at the Community Centre in Buntingford, which was in a good state considering the conditions. The hardy Blues supporters saw our boys outclass a Cougars side that are playing their football in Division 4. The Blues never played anywhere near their best but did what they had to do and the side benefited from not too many substitutions, with many of our boys trying out unfamiliar positions.

We lined up with Sam in goal, Myles, Oscar, Matthew and Harry at the back, Jake, Cam, Ethan and Marcus across the middle and Billy and Reuben up front – Charley began as the lone substitute. The pattern of the game was set from the start as the Blues pushed forward and pinned back their opponents in their own half. Our boys won most possession and when passing the ball looked good, although a tendency to rush things and take on one too many players held up our progress. Sam was a virtual spectator and the first goal, although some time in coming, was inevitable – Oscar powered the ball into the net after a scramble from a corner – 0-1. Buntingford packed their half and our boys didn’t show enough guile to get through the massed rank of bodies – it only became 0-2 when Billy poked the ball in after a goalkeeping spill. The third goal was the best to date – a sweet pass from Marcus up the line saw Reuben give chase and he was both strong and skilful in rounding the keeper to put it away stylishly – 0-3 at half time and fortunately the freezing rain had now stopped!

More of the same in the second half and the play became very congested with 21 players deep in the Buntingford half. Another nice passing move involved Reuben sending Charley down the line and he crossed it accurately for Harry to bundle it in over the line – 0-4 and then the lively Marcus set up Billy to finish with a well taken drive – 0-5. Myles and new left back Marcus snuffed out any hint of Buntingford break by accurate tackling and interceptions, Sam came out to kick clear a couple of times and Jake and Cam linked things well in midfield – one deft lob by Jake over the Buntingford defence which almost led to another goal was beautifully executed.

Matthew then added the last two goals as he came on and enjoyed the change of being up front. Firstly Ethan did great solo work in intercepting a goal kick, beating several players and laying the ball off to Matthew who finished like an expert centre forward – 0-6 and then he got his second when turning poacher and finishing off Charley’s powerful shot on goal – 0-7. A hat trick beckoned but his glancing header was saved by the Buntingford keeper.

An emphatic victory then but no more than was expected in a match which the Blues were expected to win comfortably. Well done to Buntingford for competing throughout the game and to all the players on a very wintery November day. Sterner tests lie ahead but these well taken goals, some passages of nice play and lessons learnt from trying out new positions should all further help our boys’ confidence and strengthen their repertoire as they continue to build and develop. Well done!

Blues

The Blues narrowly went down to defeat at the hands of the unbeaten league leaders and our old rivals Buntingford. The match was a story of two halves, two sloppy goals conceded and our passing game foundering on the very muddy, almost unplayable pitch. Both teams were strong and determined but the Blues lacked a cutting edge and a late goal couldn’t prevent our third loss of the season. Ironically however, there is a lot of promise coming out of the game which shows more than ever what a transition season it is for our boys, adjusting to 11 a side.

Everyone was really up for this game, sensing its importance, which went ahead despite preceding heavy rain which turned the pitch, especially in the centre areas, into a mudpatch, The Blues lined up in familiar fashion, with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Alli, Stuart, Hanney and Cam in midfield and Ethan and Marcus as our strike force. After only a couple of minutes, disaster struck as a corner wasn’t cleared properly and the ball was poked over the line to make it 0-1 and the worst start possible. After this, Buntingford kept the Blues pinned back for a period as the play got disjointed and narrow but then there was a transformation. The Blues began to pick up their play and took the game to their opponents. Nice passing interplay repeatedly took our boys deep into the Buntingford half and all the good play came from the Blues. At one point, three corners in succession were forced as the pressure ratcheted up but dangerous balls flashed across the penalty area without any of our boys getting on the end of them. Charley and Matthew both had shots but they were comfortably saved and Ethan and Charley combined nicely in another attack. The Blues were all over Buntingford but the finishing touch was missing, although the battling qualities and attitude of our boys in coming back from going behind so early on was great to see. Oscar and Jake both came on and fitted in well to our overall play and Reuben, Ethan and Marcus put pressure on the Buntingford defence. The main problem was that the Blues tried to play too much football, which was impossible on the sticky, muddy surface, particularly in the middle of the park.

The half time talk from Phil, Steve and Gary made this point clear. The boys were praised for their workrate and attitude but were told that in the conditions, they needed to use the only really good ground in the corners by knocking the ball into the spaces there and putting pressure on their opponents rather than overplaying in the middle areas.

How things can unravel so quickly! The second half had hardly begun when in a carbon copy of the first couple of minutes of the match, the Blues conceded another goal and were 0-2 down. This time, we were caught short at the back without defensive cover and the ball was flicked in in almost in slow motion, Now it was the proverbial mountain to climb as our boys faced not only a two goal deficit but the slope and the wind. Buntingford certainly had the better of the second half and put us under considerable pressure but our defensive qualities meant no more goals were conceded – even more frustrating then that two such soft goals had been given away. In the last 6 minutes, we came alive again, took the play to Buntingford and Cam scored the best goal of the game as he twisted and turned in the area and beat several defenders before rifling the ball into the net for 1-2. This gave us some hope but it turned out to be too late and Buntingford held on to win in a game where based on the two halves and on balance, we had done enough to force a draw at least.

A disappointing result, especially as we were beaten by two preventable goals and had looked so good early on, dominating the play. Here however are the optimistic signs. The Blues’ great passing football is still there but they have not yet got used to adapting it to different conditions and need to know when and how to play during matches too, when things are not being productive – today Buntingford did precisely that as they consistently pushed the ball into wide areas and put pressure on our defence and midfield. However in all other aspects, our boys were admirable today – they more than matched their strong, physical opponents who have won all their games this season, punctured any feeling of being overawed by them and hinted that great things can lie ahead for the Eagles. The Blues have always been a terrific footballing side and today they showed this at times and all the other qualities too. Phil remarked on our boys “heart, determination and commitment” afterwards and this was exactly right. Well done on your efforts today and bad luck on this defeat.

determined mood as he threatens the Wymondley defence.

In a really good, competitive match, the Blues exacted revenge on Wymondley for their league win at Pixmore and in so doing advanced to the last 16 of the County Cup. Both sides deserve credit for they way they played on a very muddy, heavy pitch and the action was fast paced and exciting. It was a sweet victory for our boys who showed how far they have come from their disappointing defeat earlier in the season by playing as a solid unit and defending resolutely when the pressure was on.

The formation this morning was 4-1-4-1, with Sam in goal, Alfie, Charley, Matthew and Hanney across the back, Tommy in the hole just in front of them, a midfield of Ethan, Stuart, Harry and Cam and Marcus as the lone striker up front – Stan, Oscar and Reuben began as subs. The two keys to success this morning were everyone knowing their role, the team keeping its shape and the Blues starting the match sharply, with crisp passing and tackling. The fight was immediately taken to their opponents and Marcus and Stuart typified the team’s intent by thrusting forward and putting the Wymondley defence on the back foot. Charley had a free kick on target but it was comfortably saved and despite some threats, it was all Eagles pressure as we took full advantage of the slight wind in our favour. It was hard to muster shots of any power with the pitch in this condition, but all the early pressure paid off when fantastic quick passing interplay up front saw Ethan bear down on goal and he rocketed the ball high into the net off the crossbar for 1-0, sparking great celebration on the pitch and the touchline. In all positions, our boys worked their socks off – tenacious tackling in midfield, dangerous attacking moves and watertight intercepting and defending. Wymondley’s dangerous forwards were closed down in numbers and had their threats snuffed out and were denied the space that had been our undoing last time. When they did break and threaten, Sam was alert and came out to gather the ball securely. Marcus laid some great passes off to his team mates – one diagonal defence splitting ball was outstanding – and it was he who set up Stuart who drilled it into the bottom of the Wymondley net for 2-0 and some breathing space for our boys. By now the Blues were well in control and could have extended their lead as Reuben came on to create more threats – through and in the clear on goal on one occasion but his shot saved – but they were rocked by Wymondley pulling one back just before half time as their forward swivelled expertly to power his shot unstoppably past Sam with a ball pulled back from the byline. 2-1 then at half time, with the complexion of the game very much changed and our boys knowing that they would be put under severe examination in the second half.

The half time talk rang in our boys’ ears as the second half began – namely the need to keep their shape and deny Wymondley space and possession. The slope and wind were both against the Blues and reinvigorated opponents were determined to pull back the deficit. However the story of the second 30 minutes was one of great defending and a ‘they shall not pass’ attitude. Wymondley did look dangerous, put us under some sustained pressure and went close a few times, most notably from corners. However each and every one of the Blues tackled, defended and chased heroically. One or two last ditch tackles were fantastically timed to deny opposition forwards who were almost through on goal, Charley and Matthew shepherded threats out of danger and where we had to play safe we did so – careless mistakes hardly figured at all today. Alfie and Hanney defended confidently at the back, Tommy broke up attacks in the middle and Harry and Cam ensured Wymondley were unable to venture too far forward as they looked dangerous and pushed down the flanks. Stan and Oscar played important link roles as the Blues gelled extremely well and confidently. As the second half went on, we began to launch more attacks of our own - Reuben twice went very close with shots and when we pushed forward, this gave helpful respite to our defence from being under constant pressure.

The final whistle was greeted with great celebration and some relief for the Blues were under a lot of pressure in the second half and did extremely well to hold firm, albeit in a match which they did deserve to win. Credit to Wymondley too and this is just the type of game from which you learn and develop so much. For the Blues, this helps to take away the memory of the previous encounter and it really shows how they can defend as a team and withstand heavy pressure when needed. This will put them in good stead in the next round and also of course in their forthcoming tough league games, starting with possibly the hardest of them all, next week against Buntingford.

Very well done boys – a great morning’s work!

Letchworth Eagles Blues………5……… Biggleswade United Youth Blue ………1…………

Winter arrived early for the Blues this year. On a wet and cold morning the Blues had their first encounter of Biggleswade United.

The game set off in an uneventful manner until a cross from the right turned into a shoot that cleared the eagle’s keeper and ended in the top left hand corner of the goal. Yet again, the eagles putting themselves under pressure in the first half of the game.

The goal seemed to trigger the Blues into action with a number of attacks and more possession. Just before half time the work paid off with a goal from Ethan. 1 – 1 at half time was a fair reflection on what had been an up and down half.

The second half kicked off and the Eagles started to pass and move with more confidence and pace. This resulted in free kicks in and around the box and more shooting opportunities for the Eagles. With the continued pressure on the Biggleswade goal the eagles managed to put 4 more goals to our tally.

A good result by the team in the end.

Ashwell Academicals……………………0 Letchworth Eagles Blues……………………1

(Charley)

U11 blues

On a chilly morning in Ashwell, the Blues got back to winning ways as they beat their old rivals by a narrow margin in a match that didn’t sparkle and won’t live long in the memory. It’s very strange that the two best passing sides from last season didn’t string too many together for the whole match today, but the windy conditions certainly had an effect, as the ball spent more time in the air than on the ground and was hit long and often inaccurately. Ashwell have struggled so far this season, not winning a point (another mystery considering they have some good players) but were up for the match against the Blues today – they tackled strongly, closed down our boys and pushed forward themselves – and in the end, this was a game where we ground out a win and where the three points were all important.

We lined up 4-4-2 as usual, with Sam in goal, Alfie and Hanney flanking Matthew and Charley in central defence, Cam, Alli, Stuart and Harry and Reuben and Marcus leading the attack. The effects of the slight slope on what was also a small and narrow pitch and the wind were not immediately apparent but became so; after some even play, Ashwell pinned back the Blues in their own half which they hardly escaped for the first 10 minutes. Our habitual slow start meant that our opponents had the better of the play and forced several corners which we defended. Gradually the Blues came into the game more – Marcus had a break and was in the clear but his shot was saved and we ended up hitting the post three times and the bar once before the end of the first half as our boys searched for the first goal. Yet overall, Ashwell were determined opponents and didn’t give us any space and we both rushed most of our moves and failed to build from the back with passes when the ball came out from our goal. Our defence was solid – Matthew and Charley let nothing pass – and Sam was outstanding, commanding his area and making one excellent save from a powerful Ashwell shot. Oscar came on for Stuart, Ethan for Marcus and Billy for Hanney as we rotated our squad to find the combination that would give us the breakthrough but this didn’t come and the increasingly strong wind made most of the overall play rather scrappy. This was despite some flashes of excellence – Oscar put a precision pass through to Ethan but his shot was saved. Once again also, we got caught offside several times which was frustrating.

Getting to half time at 0-0 was a bonus considering how the wind had been against us and how moderately we had played and the Blues began the second half with a solo run through on goal by Cam who dragged his shot just wide, as if to signal our intent to take the game to Ashwell. Yet despite more chances and pressure created on our opponents’ goal – now most of the game was played in the Ashwell half as they struggled against the wind – our passing play still didn’t come together in a sustained way. It was perhaps inevitable, given the pattern of the match, that it was a long ball hit powerfully forward that would win the day – Charley’s rocket free kick from just inside our half somehow went all the way into the net after deceiving the Ashwell keeper to make it 0-1 and there was great relief on the touchline and the pitch as the breakthrough was made. Still it didn’t bring on our normal fluid passing play however and despite intercepting most Ashwell goalkicks, the long ball was still too dominant and passes not accurate enough. Chances from Ethan and Harry (played well again today) were matched by our opponents still taking the game to us – they hit the post and Sam also made a fantastic point blank save to deny their attacker a certain goal. In the last few seconds, we almost paid for this when Ashwell crossed the ball incredibly dangerously into our area but it flashed across in front of our goal without any of their forwards making contact. It could have been disaster but soon after the whistle went and the hardest of hard fought wins was secured.

Certainly not the most attractive of matches but a well deserved win despite not playing at our best. The Blues’ defence and Sam were excellent this morning but Phil and Steve at the end emphasized the need for our attackers to be defensive and help out too, not just be active when attacking, as well as the need to go wide again – our habitual problem of keeping things too narrow and trying to go down the middle was apparent again today. Nevertheless it was a victory and this is just what the Blues needed in their league campaign.

Well done boys on a well earned three points as we climb a place in the table!

Lea Sports PSG Youth……………………0 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….9

(Harry 3, Marcus 2, Stan 2, Cam, Reuben)

This was more like it. The Blues convincingly got their first win in three matches as they turned on the style and easily beat Lea Sports PSG Youth to advance to the last 32 of the County Cup. On a beautifully sunny morning in the picturesque village of Pirton, near Hitchin, our boys enjoyed themselves, playing some eye pleasing, attractive football on a superbly prepared pitch and this was just the confidence booster that they needed after recent setbacks. PSG initially promised to be stern opponents but the Blues soon asserted themselves and dominated with their play and goals.

The Blues lined up with Sam in goal, Oscar, Charley, Matthew and Tommy across the back, Stuart, Alli, Jake and Cam in the middle and Ethan and Reuben starting up front. The first few minutes saw even play – Stuart had an early shot and a corner was forced for us but this was evened out as PSG pushed us back and had a spell of pressure themselves, deep in our half, also winning corners. Their tall, imposing centre forward was constantly looking to run at our defence and caused us some worry as he thrusted forward with imposing presence but our defence was excellent in closing him down and putting in some crucial tackles before finding team mates with passes to launch our ownmoves. Lots of our attacks came down the right and slowly but surely we began to take command. Cam fired in a corner which flashed across the area without a touch and then Alli had a great shot that rebounded off the bar. The boys’ passing was slick and incisive and was typified by a great diagonal ball from Stuart to Jake who crossed it in but we were then blown up for offside. Harry made an immediate impact when he came on as he ran powerfully at the PSG defence down the left, confidently taking on and repeatedly beating his man. Marcus too came on as a sub and by now we were dominating, without being able to put away that all important first goal. Shots were still too weak or snatched at but Marcus went close and forced a good save from the alert PSG keeper. We could sense the goal was coming and it arrived when Reuben broke on the left and crossed in superbly for Cam whose shot was initially saved but he then followed up to put the ball into the net. 0-1 then quickly became 0-2 when a clever flick in from the lively Harry was skilfully hooked in by Marcus with his right foot. Stan, Hanney and Billy were now on and blended smoothly with the passing teamwork of a confident Blues side that were by now really motoring and Harry’s unstoppable drive made it 0-3 at half time.

Phil and Steve’s half time talk was simple – play down the wings, not the middle and keep a clean sheet – and rightly praised some very good play for the first 30 minutes. Right from the restart, the Blues attacked and forced a corner but we were fortunate not to concede when PSG made a rare break and, in the clear, their forward hit the post. As if determined to fully reflect their superiority with goals, Reuben finished a nice move to make it 0-4, surprised that he wasn’t offside and then Harry got his second when he finished a move with great momentum to extend the lead to 0-5. Credit to our opponents who didn’t give up and kept pressing themselves and Sam needed to make a save to keep his goal intact. Four goals of real class completed the morning’s work; first Marcus, with cheeky self confidence, back heeled the ball on the edge of the PSG area for Stan to unleash his piledriver shot to make it 0-6 and then Marcus himself turned in Ethan’s cross for 0-7. Harry completed his hat trick and a very impressive personal performance today with a solo goal – 0-8 – and great link up play between Jake and Stan saw Stan show the close control and skill of Wayne Rooney to score the goal of the game as he shimmied, beat his man and unleashed a high curling shot into the net past the valiant PSG keeper – 0-9.

A terrific performance this morning with each and everyone of our boys at the top of their game and passing, skill and goals of the highest standard. Hopefully this will now carry across into our league games and let the boys really kick on. Thanks to our gracious hosts this morning. Very well done boys – great stuff

Royston Celtic...2 Letchworth Eagles Blues...1

(Harry)

The Blues went down to an unprecedented second defeat in a row at the hands of new opposition for this season, Royston Celtic at Greneway School, in the driving rain on a morning of grey, overcast skies in Royston. How this match was lost however all the Blues’ supporters can only puzzle over for seldom has there been such a one sided game at this level – our boys were absolutely dominant for three quarters of the encounter, played by far the better football, with some outstanding passing and passages of play, but they conceded two goals from just about the only two chances their opponents had for the whole 60 minutes. This was a hard defeat to take for everyone but it serves as another harsh lesson in how to play 11 a side football and defend tightly as well as attack with style.

As usual we were 4-4-2 - Sam in goal, Matthew and Reuben as centre backs with Hanney on the left and Alfie on the right, Alli and Cam in the middle flanked by Jake on the right and Harry on the left and Charley and Marcus up front – Billy, Stuart, Myles and Oscar began as subs. The Blues began well, taking the attack to their opponents, but the play soon evened out and we knew we were likely to be in for a tough match as Royston came into it more and launched forays forward of their own. As in last week’s match, our boys weren’t tight enough in closing down the ball and it was truly déjà vu as we went behind again 1-0 as a shot was spilled in the slippery conditions and the Royston forward had too much space and shot the ball into our net with force. A poor goal to concede again but, unlike last week, this seemed to wake us up and shake out any complacency, for the response from the Blues was fantastic and they started to play their passing football and came back at Royston with some dominant play that was to last for the rest of the match. We used the width of the pitch to good effect, with Jake and Harry very effective, thrusting deep into the Royston half and several good chances were created before Harry scored a cracking goal with a great drive from the edge of the penalty area after a one two with Jake from a corner. 1-1 then and the Blues then played more great football for the rest of the half. There was only going to be one team scoring next but unfortunately we were just not able to grab the lead.

Urged at half time to keep solid at the back, use the wings and cut out overplaying the ball in the middle and defence, the Blues took this to heart for the second half was extraordinary one way traffic. Royston hardly got out of their half, our boys carved them open time and time again with slick passing football and interplay and shot after shot rained down on the Royston goal. At one point, we had four corners in a row, but in the packed penalty area, the ball was cleared, hit bodies or just went wide when it looked like we were bound to score. Mention should be made of the Royston goalkeeper who did very well, showing good handling in the wet conditions and several times palming away fierce shots from our boys – excellent efforts came from Marcus, Harry, Charley and Stuart. At times, we were attacking at will and holding a very high line up the pitch and Sam was almost like a back line defender, always alert to clearing the ball when danger threatened. It was a really good and entertaining match and quite stunning to see how much on top we were but the enjoyment quickly drained when one unfortunate mistake at the back saw Royston grab a goal and the lead with virtually their only break of the second half. 2-1 then but to their great credit, our boys’ heads didn’t drop and they continued to push forward with even more urgency. Despite more pressure from us, numerous chances and agonizingly near misses, this was how it stayed – possibly the most misleading scoreline of the season, for if we had won by 5 or 6 goals, this wouldn’t have exaggerated our overall superiority.

Everyone was very disappointed at the end because we all knew how well our boys had played and they didn’t deserve to lose like that – even the opposition were in admiration of our passing game. A very different performance from last week and more progress in the gelling of this team and on another day, the goals will reflect the massive superiority the Blues demonstrated today. For now though, this is a whole new situation that our boys have got to get used to – and quickly – and we remain confident that they will emerge from this testing time even more together and determined to come out on top. Well done boys on your play and hard luck this morning – back to County Cup action next week!

Letchworth Eagles Blues…0 Wymondley Park…2

Another glorious sunny autumnal morning, but there was nothing glorious about the performance or result today as the Blues went down to their first league defeat in over a year at the hands of a tough and determined Wymondley side who seemed to want the game more than our boys and ran out deserved winners. On the balance of play and chances created, certainly in the first half, the Blues were on top but it’s goals that count and two decisive finishes saw the opposition race into a two goal lead that in all honesty we never really looked like pulling back as the match progressed. For once, the Blues’ accurate passing play deserted them, we lacked any kind of punch up front and our defence, which has been so assured and solid so far this season, veered between being hesitant and non existent. Bearing in mind Wymondley had previously drawn with the Knebworth side that our boys had beaten easily 4-1, this shows how below par we were this morning but hopefully this shock result will prove to be just what is needed to get rid of any kind of complacency as the season gathers pace.

We lined up 4-4-2 as usual with Sam in goal, Alfie, Reuben, Stan and Hanney across the back, Matthew and Alli flanked by Charley and Oscar and Stuart and Ethan starting up front in the centre – Marcus, Myles, Billy and Jake began as subs. Early on, we pushed forward and created several chances – Oscar broke well down the left and went just wide with his finish and Charley shot over from close range. At one point, we forced four corners in succession but these were weakly hit and shots of any real power or penetration were missing. Wymondley came more into the match and their defence was rock solid, denying the Blues any real penetration. Worryingly, they were running at and through our defence far too easily, causing all kinds of problems and we were guilty of being intimidated by robust challenges, making several unusually half hearted tackles, overplaying the ball and not taking the simple option, Finding space on the right on one break, Wymondley went 1-0 up when their forward scored with a great finish high into the net, giving Sam no chance and it went to 2-0 when there was a scramble in the box after a free kick and again there was a decisive finish from the right. Now the Blues had a real mountain to climb but, unused to being in this position, their usual slick play disappeared and passes went astray and we didn’t use the wings to any real effect. Alli had a free kick, but the ball went safely to their keeper who also made some good saves to snuff out the few chances we did create.

In the second half, an early goal was needed for the Blues to give them a chance of a famous comeback and some self-confidence, but after a bright start, the same pattern of play developed and Wymondley grew in confidence – hitting balls powerfully from corners and all over the pitch, they were the most likely to get a goal and there developed an air of inevitability on the touchline amongst the Blues’ supporters. Our boys deserve credit for continuing to try hard but shots that we did have were blocked or saved and chances not taken and it began to look like one of those days. Marcus, Billy, Myles and Jake came on as subs but couldn’t make the difference and the frequent rotation of players, although necessary, didn’t help the consistency of our play. We had two good shouts for penalties – one, where Charley was upended in the box looked as clearcut as it gets – and, when finally getting in the clear, our forwards fell into the offside trap again, but any excuses would be just that and Wymondley finished the match elated as 2-0 winners and deserved their victory.

The bottom line is that this was a very bad day in the office – as Phil said, our ‘Bury Rangers’ game from last season’s County Cup - and much more will be needed by the Blues if they are going to win the league this season. On the weekend where Hull beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates stadium, this result was an equally big a shock but an abrupt reminder to our boys that results like this can and do happen and that they have to be at the top of their game now they are playing at this level. Let’s not overdo it though, for this may prove in the long run to be a very valuable lesson since it takes away the pressure of the unbeaten tag and therefore the prize that all the teams are looking for when they take on the Eagles and it should serve to make them extra focused to put things right in their next matches. Certainly we can’t complain now that we haven’t got the competitive games that we wanted many times last year! This defeat definitely stings however and it is not something that I have been used to writing about so come back next week boys ready for the physical challenge, rediscover your touch and teamwork and be singlemindedly determined to put the Eagles back on track and on top where they belong!

No.3 21st September 2008 - Herts County Cup U11 –Second Round

Hertford Heath Junior……………………2 Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………….13

(Ethan 3, Cam 3, Marcus 2, Jake, Matthew pen, Sam pen, Charley , og)

The Blues began their quest to win the County Cup in their first season at 11 a side with a huge win as they outclassed and annihilated Hertford Heath Junior, but without clicking into top gear and playing at their very best throughout. Much sterner tests await but this was a match which was never a real contest and seven of the team got on the goalsheet.

It was a brilliantly sunny morning at Pinewood School in Ware and the pitch was excellent to play on – the type of flat, even surface with a lush covering of grass that suits the Eagles’ football so well. The Blues lined up 4-4-2 again, with Sam in goal, Alfie, Stan, Reuben and Hanney across the back, Matthew and Cam in the middle with Harry on the left and Charley on the right and Stuart and Ethan leading the line in the middle. It didn’t take long for the boys to show their class and superiority, when a threaded ball through the middle saw Ethan give the Hertford Heath goalkeeper no chance as he slotted it home – 0-1. Charley then crossed for Cam to make it 0-2 and when Ethan again shot high into the net after a nicely weighted ball from Cam, it was already 0-3 before our band of supporters had really settled into the match. The ever developing teamwork between our boys was evident all over the pitch and pleasingly, we were not getting caught offside so much as last week. Marcus and Jake came on and after Ethan’s brilliant control and flick forward, Marcus had an instant impact as a supersub as he lobbed the goalkeeper with his first touch – 0-4 and everyone enjoyed that goal – especially Marcus who celebrated accordingly! Billy came on and joined his teammates, all enjoying themselves and hungry for more goals and Jake’s deflected shot saw the score rise to 0-5 as we began to fear that it was looking a bit like many of the Yellows’ matches last year! Reuben got in on the act with a powerful freekick from a long way out which was spilled by the unlucky Hertford Heath keeper and Cam pounced – 0-6 and then Marcus finished clinically with just one brief glimpse of the ball to make it 0-7. There was just time for him to turn provider with a great cross that was met and put away cleanly by Jake to make it 0-8 by half time.

Phil, Steve and Garry applauded the boys’ efforts in the half time team talk whilst stressing the need to avoid complacency and keep on with their passing football. The Blues were certainly playing very well, but not at their very fluent best and a certain sluggishness kicked in at the restart – it must be difficult to keep up the momentum when so easily and so far ahead of their opponents. We lost our shape a little, didn’t close down enough in the middle and conceded a sloppy goal with a deflection from a rare attack and corner from the Hertford Heath forwards. It took a few minutes for the Blues to click back into gear and another Reuben freekick did the trick as it was met and glanced in superbly by the lively Ethan who completed his hat trick – 1-9. Now our boys pulled away again; talking a lot to each other and spraying out clever balls wide and changing direction, Matthew first won and then converted a penalty by shooting high into the net – 1-10 and then Sam came up and also scored from another penalty as the Hertford Heath defenders couldn’t keep up with our trickery and speed of movement in their area. No problems for Sam as he joined Matthew as the second of our new penalty takers team and it was now 1-11. It must have been rather dispiriting for our opponents, whose mistake from a goalkick led to yet another goal as Cam ran through and accurately fired it into the net for his third, but no-one begrudged them a moment of glory, as their skilful winger ran through down the left, beating several of our players and shot high into our net – an excellent effort and something for them to celebrate, even though our management team were righty disappointed that we had conceded twice today. Charley scored a final goal to make it 2-13, putting Hertford Heath out of their misery and wrapping an extraordinary morning’s scoring.

Well done boys – a very pleasant way to spend an hour in the sunshine today and some of your individual goals and moves were fantastic to see. However, things will get much tougher in the weeks and months ahead – starting with the return to league action next week!

Knebworth Lions Youth………………………0 Letchworth Eagles Blues……………………4

(Charley 2 (1 pen), Ethan, Harry)

blues

‘Spot the ball’ - Myles and Hanney keep a close watch as they defend the Blues’ goal.

On a sunny, breezy morning, the Blues travelled to the familiar surroundings of their old rivals Knebworth, which has been a happy hunting ground in recent seasons and where we have played some good, competitive matches. This morning produced a comfortable victory, with our boys still developing and learning to play together as an 11 a side team but the result was never in doubt and the excellent progress continues.

The Blues lined up as 4-4-2, with Sam in goal, Oscar on the right and Hanney on the left, flanking a powerful twin central defensive partnership of Reuben and Stan, Alli, Matthew, Charley and Tommy across the middle and Ethan and Harry leading the attack. Just like last week, it was a brisk and aggressive start from our boys as they went on the attack and an incisive thrust after only a few minutes saw Ethan feed Charley who coolly flicked it high into the net to make it 0-1. Much of our play was down the right, with Charley very prominent and dangerous and the score doubled when he raced down the wing and crossed in a super ball for Ethan to finish with precision – 0-2. Knebworth had no answer to the accurate passing and distribution of the Blues and paid dearly for their slow start as the match was by now as good as over with our boys firmly in control. A trip in the box meant a penalty was awarded to us and you would have put your house on Ethan scoring but unfortunately he dragged the ball wide. Some respite for Knebworth then but not for long when Matthew’s clever lifted through ball led to a chase by Ethan who rounded the keeper and set up Harry who couldn’t miss from close range to make it 0-3. A host of substitutes were used today and it must have been a fearsome sight for the opposition to see the strength in depth of our squad and Cam, Myles, Jake and Marcus all made important and instant contributions. 0-3 at half time then and the Blues in cruise control and they were reminded to keep things tight at the back and not over commit and also keep going wide in the second 30 minutes.

Knebworth began the second half however like a different team and came on strong, buoyed by now having the slope of the pitch in their favour. It was fair to say that they had the better of the first part of the second half, pushing back the Blues and forcing several corners in succession. Several scrambles in the box ensued but excellent, resolute defending kept our goal intact and Sam, who had made several good saves in the first half, was very assured, vocal and in command of his goal. All of our defenders were excellent and attacked the ball – Oscar, Hanney and Myles again (having another great game) in particular let nothing through and Knebworth were denied even a consolation goal. Up front, the Blues had several chances to extend their lead but the Knebworth keeper was excellent in winning several one on one encounters (he later went off injured after a brave interception) and we failed to put away dangerous crosses and shot harmlessly from too far out. There was some lovely passing interplay between Marcus, Jake and Ethan and Marcus also held up the ball well and took on the defenders as he ran through on goal. Improving from last week, the Blues used the wide ball to much greater effect and Stuart attacked powerfully through the middle. Two clear areas for improvement are heading the ball more when attacking and above all learning to stay onside! Charley put away a penalty just before the end to make it 0-4 and, notwithstanding the fact that the score could have been 8 or 9-0 if all our chances had been taken, all credit to Knebworth who put up a spirited and determined performance in the second half to make the Blues fight for their win.

Another excellent victory for the Blues who now sit proudly at the top of the league. Some very tough battles to come undoubtedly but this is a as good a start to the season as we could have hoped for and progression and development taking place all the time. Well done boys and now onto the County Cup next week!

Fairlands Youth………………………1 Letchworth Eagles Blues……………………4

(Ethan, Stuart, Alli, Marcus)

u11 blues

(Alli ‘does a Beckham’ and makes it 0-3 to the Blues with a brilliant free kick)

The brave new world of 11 a side football began for the Blues this morning at Barclay School in Stevenage and there was great excitement and anticipation amongst the team’s supporters as we wondered what the forthcoming season will bring and how our fantastic boys will fare as they step up after last season’s heroics. New season, new format and some new teams to play in Under 11 Division 1 and it should be extremely interesting to see how the former Blues and Yellows mould together, play as one unit and take on their opponents and, on the evidence of this morning, all the signs are very encouraging indeed.

Inevitably, given this summer, a grey morning but although it was damp underfoot, the pitch played well and didn’t cut up and for their first match, the Blues were pitted against Fairlands Youth who had won their league last season. The line up was Sam in goal, with a defensive back four of Matthew, Charley, Alfie and Hanney, Stuart and Alli in midfield, Ethan and Marcus up front in the centre, flanked by Harry on the left and Cam on the right. From the kickoff, the Blues took the game to Fairlands and, after only a few minutes, Ethan, providing the incisiveness up front that we had lacked against the Under 12s, twisted and turned cleverly in the penalty area and slotted the ball home to make it 0-1 and the Blues’ first competitive goal at 11 a side. Everyone looked on their game very quickly this morning – the familiar passing interplay was present and the back four looked very compact as a unit and as if they had been playing together for a long time. Play got a little more even for the next part of the half but there was no doubting the Blues’ superiority, as chances were created, corners forced and shots targeted at the Fairlands goal. Marcus cleverly set up Stuart whose shot went under the goalkeeper to double lead - 0-2 and Harry and Hanney showed some nice touches as they thrusted forward and caused their opponents all kinds of problems. Sometimes it got very crowded in parts of the pitch – with our own boys encroaching on each other’s space as much as their opponents and play rather narrow and congested, whilst the offside rule is a whole new factor in the equation, but all of these are to be expected as our boys learn to adapt to 11 a side and the overwhelming feeling on the touchline was how well the Blues were playing and how outstandingly they were coming to terms with everything. Alli scored a magnificent goal from a sweet free kick that was always destined for the top corner (see photograph) to make it 0-3 and it was a very satisfying first half for Phil, Steve and Garry to reflect upon after what is now 30 minutes play!

In the second half, the Blues continued in the same way and controlled the game. Regular and large scale substitutions will not always help the pattern of our play and are inevitable this year, but everyone today took their place with ease and Billy, Oscar, Jake and Myles (playing very assuredly in defence) slotted into the formation extremely well. The Blues didn’t get the ball wide often enough and this is an area which will improve the performance in the future but there were some moments of very classy play – for example a lovely overlap on the left involving Marcus and Hanney. Fairlands didn’t lie down as the second half unfurled and got a goal back with a header over Sam who had a confident first game, showing good handling of the ball. Our boys always had to be vigilant to breakaway attacks but our defence was solid, closing down forwards and intercepting where necessary, before setting off an attack of our own. We forced several corners in a row and created lots of chances before Marcus deservedly got a goal when his shot went in off a Fairlands defender to make it 1-4 and put the seal on a great first performance of the season.

Well done boys – a terrific display that shows so much promise for the future. It is going to be a lot of fun and excitement following your exploits this season and all your supporters are looking forward to the season ahead!
