Letchworth Garden City Eagles “Oranges” v Baldock

15th November – KO 10.30 am

Team
Elliott, Kieron C-L, Thomas, Joe, Ryan, Harry, Jordan, Ben

The oranges kicked off the first half against a very tall and physically strong Baldock side on a confined, bobbly pitch. Early Eagles pressure saw Joe and Jordan combine well. Baldock counter attacked and Elliott made a couple of good saves. Strong defending from Kieron and Thomas restricted Baldock’s opportunities and with Ryan influential in the middle both breaking up opposition moves and linking well with Harry, Eagles began to press.

Ben came on for Thomas and was straight in the action starting a move that saw Ryan and Jordan combine before Ryan’s shot was blocked.

Baldock started to come on strong and Elliot made further saves to thwart the opposition. Kieron nearly released Jordan before Harry made an excellent tackle to stop a Baldock break.

At the break the score remained 0-0, a fair reflection of an even half. Baldock being the stronger team but Oranges playing a lot of attractive football.

The second half started with Ben, Ryan and Harry combining well. Ryan again went close before a Baldock attack managed to bundle through the Eagles defence and gain Baldock the lead.

With Elliott solid in goal and the defence of Kieron, Ben and Thomas also looking strong, Oranges began to seek the equalizer. Ryan again went close before Harry set up Jordan for a shot saved well by the Baldock keeper.

Thomas swapped again for Ben who had looked solid in defence and attack. Eagles forced a chance and a super shot from Joe hit the post. So unlucky !

A physical battle between Harry and his marker continued with Harry continuing to be influential.
Thomas tackled strongly to keep the Eagles in the game. Further Eagles pressure created opportunities for Harry and Jordan without reward.

In the final minutes Eagles continued to press with Harry flashing a great ball across the six yard box.  The final whistle went to end a very competitive game. The oranges standing up to the much taller Baldock team and responding with their usual slick passing and movement.

Final Score: 1 – 0 Baldock

Letchworth Garden City Eagles “Blacks” v Baldock

1st Half

Its a sunny autumn morning and the Eagles are looking upbeat and ready for kick off !!!

The boys take their places on the pitch and the whistle blows !!  Possession is 50/50 at the start with both teams stringing some good passes together. It’s Baldock though who get the first break but the ball is cleared by Joseph before they get a shot on goal which results in a corner.

The corner is taken and a shot on target for Baldock but Jakob is on good form and gets a hand to it which gives Baldock another corner, but they are denied a goal by a great save again by Jakob.

The Eagles get a break and Brandon has a good run down the pitch, he then passes the ball to Billy who has a shot but it goes just wide of the goal.  Eagles have a corner taken very well by Jack but is cleared by Baldock.

Daniel and Jack are getting stuck in with some good tackles, but it’s a tackle by Baldock which results in Brandon being injured and replaced by Elliott, but Brandon made a speedy recovery and came back on pitch to give Kieran a little rest after running his boots off up and down the pitch.

After some nail biting missed shots from Baldock its Joseph who’s given a rest for a revived Kieran to come back on and with some superb team work he puts it in the top right hand corner 1-0 to the Eagles!!!!!!

The Eagles are on good form and it’s not long before Billy has another shot on goal but just clips the post and goes wide, The whistle goes and it’s half time !!!

Second Half

Brandon is on in place of Jack

The Eagles kick off the second half but Baldock are on the attack and move quickly down the pitch a shot is taken and saved by Jakob, but the Eagles come back fighting, and with Daniel intercepting the ball makes a pass to Kieran who goes for goal but is brought down by the goalkeeper, all is ok and the game resumes.

Baldock have the ball but not for long if Daniel has anything to do with it, he put the Baldock  player under pressure and with that gets the Eagles a throw in which Kieran gets a head on enough for Billy to get a touch and make it 2-0.

The Eagles defence is strong as Baldock go back on the attack Joseph makes a great tackle and wins the ball, with a good run down the pitch Joseph lays the ball of to Kieran who takes a shot but it goes wide. While the ball is out of play Eagles make a sub Jack is now back on in place of Kieran.

A goal kick taken by Baldock Town gives them an opportunity but Jakob is on fire today and saves a good shot.

Jack finds some space and Daniel spots him and with a good cross Jack has a shot and is very close as it goes just over the cross bar. It’s a goal kick taken by the Baldock G.K which finds a Baldock player, Their was a battle of feet in front of the Eagles goal and with Jakob not being able to get to it Baldock get a lucky goal.

The Eagles have possession and as Brandon goes to make a run he is brought down with a tackle and is taken off the pitch with a sore leg, Kieran comes back on in place of Brandon. Baldock are back on the attack and as they go for a shot Daniel tries to defend but the ball comes off of his arm and a penalty is given, with a stroke of luck Jakob was relieved when the ball was kicked right over the top of the goal.

An Eagles goal kick finds Billy who then makes a good pass to Kieran who puts it in the bottom left of the goal 3-1

Time was not on Baldock’s side and with in two minutes of  Eagles last goal the final whistle was blown.

What a game a great effort by all!  WELL DONE BOYS!!!!!!!!!!

8th November 2009 Letchworth Eagles Oranges v Potton Town League Cup Match

Team: Elliott, Thomas, Kieron C-L, Harry, Ryan, Joe, Jordan, Kieran B.

Eagles kick-off and after a bright start we begin to take control of the game with some good passing out of defence, through midfield and up to Jordan. Joe does some good work down our right and swings a cross over for Jordan to make a header which is cleared by the Potton defence but only as far as Ryan on the edge of the box whose strong shot hits the outside of the right post.

Potton break away and some good covering defensive work by Kieron and Thomas stop the danger and it’s away for a corner, which is then headed away by Ryan.

Then follows a lovely move from defence to attack, Thomas calmly plays a ball to Harry who passes over to Joe on the right, again a good early cross behind the Potton defenders causes problems for them.  Ryan, Harry and Joe are now taking control of midfield and with Kieron and Thomas happily playing short passes out of defence; we really are playing some excellent football.

Harry has a shot which is well saved, the Potton defence only clear to Jordan who makes a lovely jinking run and has a shot which is also well saved.

We look in almost total control. HOWEVER, Potton have a break away and Thomas has to come across to intercept for a corner. It’s a good ball, which bounces out and falls to their midfielder who hits a sweet volley into Elliott’s bottom left hand corner.  Almost only the 1st thing Elliott has had to do is pick the ball out of the net – unlucky! 0 -1

But the boys come back well and we make some attacks down our left with Harry and Jordan combining well, Jordan gets a shot away which is saved only by a diving keeper.  Harry takes a short corner to Thomas who plays it back Harry crosses and again the Potton defence frustrates us and they break, Thomas and Ryan sprint back from the corner to help Kieron see out the danger – good work.

Ryan comes off from midfield for a break to be replaced by Kieran Bush.

It’s all Eagles now and they are showing some great spirit and hard work, tackles coming in fast from Kieron C-L, Thomas and Harry.  Kieran B has a great shot from range which is well saved. HALF TIME – somehow we’re 0-1 down!

2nd Half.

All gets a bit exciting and the reporter begins to forget he’s meant to be reporting!!

We start the half with Kieran B up front, Ryan back on in midfield and Jordan off for a break.  It takes a little while for us to get into full swing with a few early stoppages, but soon Joe starts to get control of the right and again tests their defence with 2 excellent crosses.  Potton then make a break into our half and Elliott makes a good save from a header.  We take control of midfield and after an attack breaks down it falls to Thomas on whose shot is deflected for a corner. It’s well defended but leads to a throw-in, Harry has a shot and then Kieran B has a shot. It’s all happening in the Potton half; Kieran B works well on the right hand side gets a great cross in for Harry to have another shot.

Kieran B is replaced after a really hard-working 15 minutes either side of half-time and Jordan goes up front.

Really great spirit being shown by the boys now, still 0-1 down but we’re bombarding the Potton goal, still getting great tackles in and really pressurising the Potton players and not letting our heads drop.

Another attack sees Joe and Jordan link up on the right hand side, Joe’s persistence sees him through, a nice pass inside to Jordan and finally the boys get their reward. Great finish by Jordan 1 -1.

Now we’re all over Potton, Harry has his best part of the game. Some good skill down the left takes him past 2 players, he very nearly loses it to the Potton right back but a great battle and strength shown by Harry sees him get the ball back, head to the line and make a lovely cross back across goal and Joe on the right hand side is there to finish 2 – 1

But from the kick-off we fall asleep, Potton attack through our midfield, Elliott makes a save but there is a scramble from the rebound, the ball hits the post and wide.  Potton now have their best part of the game, Elliott is on his guard and has to come out a couple of times.  Thomas and Kieron C-L are now busier too, but as a unit they stay calm under pressure and Potton best other effort is a shot wide.

We start to switch back on again, Thomas makes a good challenge and is up and passes to Kieron C-L who makes a driving run into midfield and then finds Jordan who holds the ball up and waits for a run from Joe. A really lovely pass inside the Potton defence leaves Joe through on the right and his shot is saved onto the bar and down.  REFEREE, it’s over the line??? No.

Another break down the right and another shot, this time by Jordan skims the top of the bar and out across goal.

The Final whistle.

A really excellent performance by ALL the team, some great football, lots of spirit to fight back from 0 – 1 down and a very well deserved 2 -1 win sees us in to the next round.

WELL DONE ALL THE BOYS.

LETCHWORTH EAGLES Blacks vs. Hormead Hares Blacks - 1st November 2009

1st Half

The boys start the game in a positive way passing well in difficult conditions, but an early break by Hormead gives Jakob the chance to make a good save. Strong running by Jack, Daniel and Kieran ensure good early pressure and this is rewarded when a positive break by Daniel and Brandon sets Billy free who drives a low shot that takes a deflection into the goal for an early lead.  1-0

It was Eagles soon on the attack again with Brandon and Billy linking up well and another good shot by Billy is once again deflected but finds its way out to Jack who calmly nestles the ball into the net.  2-0

Hormead start to apply pressure but strong tackling by Joseph and Brandon keep the attacks to a minimum. Billy goes off for a rest and is replaced by Elliott who soon joins in by making a good block to a powerful Hormead free kick.

With half time approaching Elliott makes a good pass to Joseph who decides to go direct with a long clearance up field which sets Kieran free to unleash a good shot that clips the out side of the post.

2nd Half

The conditions worsen but the boys start the second half on the attack, an early free kick by jack is cleared out to Billy who again takes a snap shot but goes agonisingly wide.

Jakob is kept busier in the second half and deals with anything that comes his way, Joseph also rises to the cause by making three successive blocks to frustrate the Hormead forwards. Jack and Daniel also keep the work rate up with some good one-touch play.

Kieran’s persistence up front earns a corner, which gets cleared out to Brandon who hits a sublime shot that just shaves the top of the cross bar.

Entering the last five minutes sees arguably the move of the match with Brandon, Jack, and Daniel all combining well to release Kieran who despatches the ball home to wrap up an excellent move and team display.   3-0

Man of the Match: Jakob.

Eagles Oranges v Hormead Hares Oranges - 1st November 2009

A very wet and windy day saw the start of the first game against Hormead Hares!  Right from the start the boys were up for it, some great defending and calm and composed passing from Kieron and Thomas sends Harry flying down the wing, a good cross to Ryan who attempts a shot narrowly missing the goal.

The game is very open but good defending again with passing through the midfield, this time sending Jordan on a brilliant run, skipping tackles and shooting which produces a good save from their keeper.  Our midfield have started to take hold of the game, Thomas and Ryan are throwing their weight into every tackle.  Some of the one touch passing between Joe, Jordan and Harry is a joy to watch.  Elliott makes a great save when we get caught on a fast break, but soon we are back on the attack, Jordan gets his reward with an excellent finish, set up by a fine pass from Ryan.  Jordan quickly makes it 2 0, this time his shot is fumbled by the keeper in the very difficult conditions.  There is just time for Elliott to pull off a fine save before the half time whistle.

The second half starts the same as the first Ben and Kieron are solid and confident on the ball in defence playing us out of trouble.  Elliott takes a kick to the head after a brave dive at the feet of the players but he is soon back up on his feet.  The boys are back on the attack in no time winning corner after corner, again Jordan with silky skills and a fine finish makes it 3 0 and Jordan’s hat-trick!!  Harry and Joe work hard tracking back and tackling and sprinting forward and they were both unlucky with near misses.

Hormead Hare’s come close and hit the post but still our defence and midfield battle hard!  Once again Jordan finished a great solo run from a fast break from defence 4 0!  Hormead get a late goal in the last couple of minutes.

Sorry the second half was too exciting to write too much!!!!  All I can say is well played to all the boys, best game I have seen played this season in the worst conditions to play in – wicked!

EAGLES Blacks vs. Melbourn Dynamos Tigers - 11th October 2009

A bright start by the boys sees Kieran have an early short well saved after good work by Daniel and Jack in midfield.

Dynamos come back quickly and have a corner which is cleared by Daniel, the following corner is well cleared by Joseph which sets up an attack on our left with Billy working well to give us a corner.  It’s taken by Jack and after a goalmouth scramble it’s well collected by the Dynamos keeper.

Dynamos come back at us but an excellent intervening tackle by Brandon and then control and pass to Billy down our left, onto Kieran and then onto Jack.  Pleasingly for Paul, Jack takes a nice touch to control it and then rifles home for the lead.  1 -0

From the restart Brandon regains possession, passes to Daniel on the right who after riding one tough tackle is then brought down further up the pitch.  Jack takes the free-kick really well, but just misses out on his second goal as it hits the crossbar.

We keep the pressure up though and Kieran has a good shot in the box, it bounces off the keeper to Daniel who is in the right place at the right time.  2 – 0

Dynamos are now managing only long range efforts but Jakob keeps his concentration and saves well twice from these long shots.  Dan comes off for a break and Ben comes on. We keep up our pressure with a shot from Kieran, a corner which is taken short by Jack, it breaks to Ben who is in bravely but can’t keep his shot down.

We have a break down our left and great work by Billy and Jack sees us get to the byline, cross to Kieran from him to score his first well deserved goal of the day.  3 – 0

All Eagles now as Ben makes a good run down our right, pass to Kieran whose shot is saved but it breaks to Jack who brings it back inside and finishes really neatly with his left foot for his 2nd goal of the day. 4 – 0

To show how much the boys want to win, Dynamos kick-off and attack and Brandon makes 3 fantastic tackles one after another to keep the lead at 4, great determination.

We reach half-time worthy 4-0 leaders.

At the start of the 2nd half Daniel comes back on, this time for Billy.  We have some early pressure with Brandon earning a couple of corners, but from a break away Dynamos earn a free-kick on their left.  An unstoppable shot beats Jakob on his left, nothing could be done. 4 – 1

We keep the pressure up though 2 attacks are set up by Dan and Jack for Kieran and Joseph to have saved shots.  Kieran is having a great game up front and his pressure earns us another corner.  Jack takes the corner (an inswinging beauty) which Kieran leaps to head in to the bottom corner.  Brilliant set-play. 5 – 1

Billy comes back on and Ben is off this time.  We continue to break down the left and right, Billy having a good run leading to a shot saved from Kieran.  Brandon has a great run in the middle, and shows some of the skills he’s been learning from the training C.D.!

Dynamos clear and Billy, who is now playing at back, judges the bounce really well and heads to Dan in the middle, a good run and shot, which is well saved leads to Kieran on the follow-up. 6 – 1 and a Bushy hat-trick!

Ben is back on and the hat-trick hero takes a well earned rest. BUT, he’s almost straight back on as Brandon takes a knock. And that means no rest for Dynamos as now Ben has a great run on the right, crosses for Kieran whose shot is well saved.  Our final bit of attacking action sees Kieran set up Ben for a shot, but it goes just wide and into the side-netting.

A very well deserved 6 -1 final score.  Well done to all the boys.

Team: Jakob, Joseph, Brandon, Jack, Daniel, Billy, Kieran B, Ben (Capt.).

EAGLES Oranges vs. Melbourn Dynamos Panthers - 11th October 2009

1st Half

The boys started the game really well knocking the ball about on the floor and putting the Dynamos under pressure from the off. A very good move forced an early corner which Joe curled right into the goal mouth but both Jordan and Harry just couldn’t get the touch to force the ball home.

Ryan slipped a lovely ball through for Jordan whose clever first touch pushed him past the last defender but his shot was very unlucky as it whizzed just past the far post. A long clearance from the Melbourne defenders put them on the attack and their lads up front pressured the ball really well, their forward managed to nick the ball away and then produced a lovely finish by burying the ball in the bottom corner. 0-1.

Eagles came back with a great move when Ryan played in Jordan, he turned inside his man and then rolled the ball into the path of Harry who hit a first time screamer but the keeper denied him with a super save. The Eagles put the Dynamos under pressure with some great football but again the goalkeeper denied them with 3 brilliant saves including a superb double save from Jordan and Harry.

Joe went on a powerful run down the left wing and then found Jordan with a good ball; he in turn played it inside to Ryan who slipped a clever return ball for Jordan to strike, but his shot crashed into the side netting. Down the other end the Dynamos went very close when a good shot crashed against the Eagles bar and bounced away. Kieron found Harry out on the left wing with a lovely sweeping ball and Harry beat his marker with a little step over before pinging in a great cross which Joe met at the far post with a very calm finish and the Eagles were level. 1-1.

Elliott replaced Kieron. Melbourne came back strongly but Elliott, Thomas and Ryan all defended very well to keep them at bay, but Melbourne took the lead again when their forward cut in from the left wing and drilled his shot into the far corner. 1-2. Then just before the break the Dynamos went two up when the ball was smashed in from a goal mouth scramble. 1-3.

2nd Half

After the half time team talk the lads came out flying and really put Melbourne under pressure. Harry fed a good early ball into Ryan who flicked a super ball through to Jordan who spun and smacked a first time shot into the top corner. 2-3. The Eagles created some great passing moves and really pushed hard for the equaliser which came when a quick corner into the middle found Jordan who drilled the ball home.  3-3.

Both teams were now going all out for the win and both creating great chances, Jordan’s looping volley crashed back off the Dynamos bar, and Elliott denied the Melbourne forward with a brilliant flying save to push the ball around the far post. Melbourne were really close to taking the lead when their forward found himself through on goal but a very brave Elliott dived at the boys feet to deny him, another lad hit the rebound goal wards but Joe got back and cleared off the line, and Elliott managed to save a third effort which looked to be looping in until the keeper climbed high and clawed the ball away. The Eagles produced another good passing move which saw Thomas and Ryan combining really well to create a chance for Jordan to grab his Hat-trick with a lovely flick into the top corner. 3-4.

Kieron carried the ball out of defence to put the Eagles on the attack and when the ball dropped to Harry his looping volley forced the Dynamos keeper into a great save. Joe drilled the rebound into the goalmouth where the Dynamos defender tried to keep the ball out but could only deflect the ball into the net. 3-5. Harry completed the scoring when he again tried a volley but this time the keeper couldn’t get to it and the ball nestled into the far corner.

Final Score: LGCE 6 – 3 Melbourne Dynamos
Team:  Elliott, Ryan(Cap), Kieron, Harry, Joe, Thomas, Jordan, Elliott

Eagles U10 Oranges Vs Wormley Youth - 26th September 2009

Eagles kick off with great moves and skills from Harry.  Wormley soon put Elliott’s goal skills to test by attacking it from the start of the game.  The ball is soon down to the other end and Ryan has a shot at goal but unfortunately it’s saved.  Joe’s working hard with some great kicks.  The ball starts to make its way back to our goal but Thomas gets the ball away and is eventually saved by Elliott.  Kieron throws on and Eagles are battling on with their heads up.

Wormley have a free kick and saved by Ryan.  The boys are still trying very hard to get the ball into their goal but they don’t succeed.  Kieron is defending very well at the back and there is a lot of great passing between the boys.

Half Time 0 – 0

Wormley kick off and Kieron clears the ball away from the goal.  Elliott working hard on his first match with the boys, running well up and down the line.  Wormley quickly pop a goal in that they’ve been waiting for, making the score 1 – 0 to Wormley.  The boys are now panicking and have got the heads down a bit but with two saves from Elliott and Kieron they soon pick themselves back up passing to each other and putting Wormley under pressure.  Time is ticking and the boys are getting very frustrated, they’ve had a lot of shots but the ball just won’t go in.  Thomas gets given a free kick and with a great try for a goal from Joe but unfortunately its saved.  The final result is 1 -0 to Wormley.

Team – Elliott L, Harry, Joe, Jordan, Ryan, Kieron, Thomas and Elliott M

20th September 2009 - LETCHWORTH EAGLES Blacks Vs Hitchin Colts

After a disappointing game the previous week the boys showed they wanted to put the record straight right from the warm up, all keen and looking sharp.  After the pre match talk we set out our goal and from the kick off the boys played some fantastic football which is a great feat as they have only played together for a short time.  They stunned the opposition with some sublime passing and clinical finishing to go 3 – 0 up, however Hitchin showed fantastic character by not lying down and with great resolve came back to bring the score to 3 – 3.  With this the boys raised their game once more and piled on the pressure which paid off  and produced another 2 goals ending in a 5 – 3 victory and producing a very entertaining 8 goal thriller and more grey hairs for the coaches.  Kieran and Joseph hard working and industrious at the back, Jacob commanding his area well and pulling off some fantastic saves, Ben, Billy, Jack, Brandon combining well going forward and were unlucky not to bag a few more goals between them and Dan up front holding the ball up well and was rewarded for his efforts by bagging a hat trick.

 Final Score 5-3

U10’s ORANGE & BLACKS (HOME)

LETCHWORTH EAGLES Oranges vs. Stevenage Town Hurricanes

13th September 2009

The team sat down with Rob and Paul for their team talk and movement on set pieces, communication and take a touch + complete a pass were the targets of the day.

 1st Half

Stevenage won the toss and elected to kick off and were instantly rewarded with a goal, 1-0 to the away side. Heads did not drop however and it was LGCE turn to go on the attack, Harry connected well with the ball and hit the post. Corner to LGCE - Joe swung the ball in and Kieron scored to bring the Eagles level. There was good pressure from the home side in the Stevenage half and Joe, Harry, Ryan and Jordan were passing the ball around superbly. Against the run of play Stevenage scored on the counter attack to make it 2-1. Our defence was being tested once more and Elliott made a great save to keep us in the match. Again Stevenage attacked and Kieron made a great sliding tackle. Stevenage still on the attack once more but the defence of Kieron and Thomas was holding strong, Joe and Ryan were also helping at the back – another goal was not going in the Letchworth net today!

It was Stevenage once more on the attack and Kieron had 2 players running at him, he made a great tackle to deny them making a shot, the ball fell to Joe who had a great shot on target which their goalie saved.

Harry who was having a great time in midfield won the ball and passed through to Joe, Letchworth were now keeping the ball again and moving it around nicely not letting Stevenage get possession.

Stevenage had another shot on goal which was saved then shortly followed by another super shot from the away side which was heading straight for the top corner had Elliott not managed to get a strong hand to it. It was the Hurricane’s turn to have some possession and the whole team pulled together defending strongly, the ball was now with Ryan who turned past his marker to have a shot, save. Thomas then had a shot, save! Next it was Jordan’s turn who ran on to a great pass from Ryan then beat off 2 defenders to release his shot which went just wide of the left post. Great football from Letchworth. Just before half time Jordan had another shot which the goalie just got his hands to and stopped us going to the break even.

 2nd Half

Stevenage were on the attack again and a tackle was needed from Thomas, Harry had the ball and passed through to Jordan who broke into the Stevenage half and we won a corner. A cross from Jordan into the area and Harry done well to get a good connection with the bouncing ball to score and make it level, 2-2.

It was now end to end with Letchworth passing and defending well. Great pass from Thomas to Harry to Ryan to Jordan – shot saved once more. Ryan then made a run down the left wing to the corner crossing the ball which a sliding Jordan just missed, it was cleared and Thomas had a shot – save.

Stevenage then had three corners one after another and Elliott obligingly made three saves.

Letchworth broke and Jordan found a pass from Harry, he side stepped the defence and released the shot which was only denied by the right post.

Stevenage were now pressurising again and the Eagles were having to defend well to stop conceding another. A long goal kick was taken by Elliott which Jordan controlled and played a lovely one two with Joe, Jordan got his cross in and another shot was saved. Letchworth shot – saved, Letchworth shot – just wide. Eagles then won a corner, shot – saved.

It was again end to end stuff and Kieron found himself once more with two attacking players running at him, another great tackle from the defender. Kieron and Thomas were doing a great job in defence with Elliott guarding his line well.

It was the Eagles turn once more and Joe had a shot saved. Ryan passed the ball to Jordan who passed to Harry who had a shot that was just over the bar.

A great game which Letchworth thoroughly deserved to get all three points from but one point will do nicely.

 Final Score 2-2.

Letchworth Eagles Blacks v Stevenage Town Tornadoes

4 things for boys to work on:

  • 1/ Take a touch and pass
  • 2/ Communicate with each other
  • 3/ Movement at Set pieces
  • 4/ Early Crosses

Eagles kick off and the ball is straight out to the right and Jack makes an aggressive run but is tackled and the ball is off for a throw-in.  The ball is worked over to the left, Billy gets his early cross in, but no-one is on the end of it and Stevenage Town clear their lines and from that they make a quick break away on our left and a good shot by the Town striker and they were 1-0 up.  A good start by us is undone by a very fast breakaway.

2 minutes later and exactly the same happens.  Daniel, who has started very brightly, drives through the centre of the Town defence and has a good shot which is well saved.  A goal kick is controlled in midfield and their striker is through on goal, 0-2 and nothing Jakob could have done.

However, the next 15 minutes of the half were good for our boys.  Jack made some strong runs on the right and linked up well with Brandon up front.  Daniel was showing some determination and skill in the midfield and Billy was making some good runs and pleasingly some early crosses from the left.

We had several early shots from Daniel, one from Brandon after taking an excellent first touch from Jakob’s good goal kick.  The Town goalkeeper had several good saves to make and their attack was well marshalled by Joseph and Kieran at the back.

Ben replaced Billy after he got a kick in the back after making a brave defensive header.  Leading up to half time we had some very good pressure after some really good work in midfield from Daniel, Brandon and Jack.  Joseph had a good shot which their goalkeeper turned around for a corner. Daniel had a shot from distance and that was his last action of the half as he was substituted (again a high boot from the opposition – this time into Daniel’s mouth).

One final corner but no breakthrough

Half time 0-2

And the second half unfortunately started as the first did.  We started well, Jack shooting wide, good pressure in the midfield, but a breakaway by Town led to a corner.  The corner was very well taken and an excellent header into the corner 0-3.

This was the only point where the boys switched off and lost concentration and a bit of heart. We kicked off, lost the ball almost immediately and a long range effort over Jakob and it was 0-4.

We were really under pressure at this stage, Joseph having to make 2 great tackles, Ben getting a foot in and Jakob brilliantly made up for his only mistake of the game by saving very well down low.

Unfortunately though we ran out of steam in the last 5 minutes and after all 3 of the midfield left it to each other and didn’t talk to each other the Town midfield were through and on goal. 0-5.

There was still time for Daniel and Billy to combine well, Billy having shot well saved.  But from that a long goal kick and the town striker was through to make it 0-6.

A very disappointing scoreline after all the good work we’d put in, but lots of positives to be taken from the game – only the 2nd time this new team have played together.  Our bravery, good control, early crossing, but no doubt Paul and Rob will chat through things on Friday night.

LETCHWORTH EAGLES Oranges vs. Bedwell Rangers Rapids

6th September 2009

It’s the opening day of the season and the players and supporters turn up bright and early for the much anticipated 1st game.  After warming up the cloudy sky clears and the and the boys line up for the start of the game in front of a capacity crowd of about 72 (including season ticket holders).  Kieron captain for the day wins the toss and opts to kick-off.

The game starts and both teams come out of the traps quickly, it starts at a fast pace with both teams having equal possession combining passes and the action going from end to end, Elliott is tested early but seems well in control in his goal and distributes the ball well out to Ryan and Kieron, Joe and Jordan combine well down the right to put us on another attack then the ball spills out to the edge of the area and as Harry bears down to unleash a venomous shot a Bedwell defender gets there first to clear the ball which Harry unfortunately catches square in the face, the game is halted for a couple of minutes while he receives treatment and then bravely gets to his feet and the game continues.

Ryan comes off and Ben replaces him and settles well in at left back and combines well with Thomas.  Bedwell are on the attack again and this time their effort pays off after a bit of a scramble they find the back of the net 1-0 Bedwell, Eagles re-start brightly and after a series of good corners can not grab that equaliser, half time.

Robbie has his half time talk and encourages the boys to keep working at it as the boys are doing well, we start brightly but Bedwell match us and there is very little in it, Harry is working tirelessly in the middle of the park and produces a series of jinking runs and is posing a big threat to the Bedwell defence but today is not his day and lightning strikes twice as he gets an injury to his foot which ends the game for him, Ryan comes on and settles straight in at the centre of the park and starts to ping balls out to Joe, Thomas and Jordan who is working very hard against the stalwart Bedwell defence.

Thomas goes down after taking a knock but quickly recovers and is back on his feet, unfortunately after a lot of pressure Bedwell break and they grab a second, the clock counts down and all the boys are working very hard but time is not on their side today and the final whistle blows.  Well done to both teams a thoroughly entertaining game.

LETCHWORTH EAGLES Blacks Vs. Bedwell Rangers Galaxy

The boys are ready for their first home match of the season. There are plenty of new faces and they are looking forward to developing their skills and teamwork.

The game commences with Eagles starting strongly; Jack making a great early run but Bedwell retaliate, forcing Billy to track back quickly, intercepting the ball and passes across to Daniel, who receives well and makes a strong run back towards the Bedwell goal.

Our boys settle and start playing well – with some good passing between the players. Against the flow of play Bedwell pick up the ball and get in a shot which Jakob narrowly misses – 1-0 down and the boys have to get back into their game.

Kieran B is fighting for all the loose balls and makes some excellent tackles and interceptions. He ties in well with Joseph clearing balls up the field and then on to Daniel, Brandon and Jack.

Bedwell put some good moves together and make a number of shots which Jakob covers well. Eagles respond well and after a nice pass in from Jack, Brandon gets in a good strike but sends the ball over the bar! Bedwell react quickly again and make a shot which lobs over Jakob and in for their second goal – unlucky!

Eagles get back to their task quickly but the whistle goes for half time and they group together for some advice from Robbie and Paul.

The second half starts quickly with Eagles getting straight back into the game with a quick shot on goal from Brandon. He takes the corner, met by Billy who gets in another good shot – just missing! Bedwell make a strong move down the field but are met by Kieran B who makes a great blocking tackle! – Excellent!

Bedwell take control of the match at this point, making some good shots from flowing movements; momentarily Eagles loose focus and concede 3 goals in quick succession. Eagles regroup and try to regain control. Joseph is working hard making some crucial interceptions and clearances from a number of Bedwell initiatives. Another shot on goal by Bedwell is calmly and efficiently collected by Jakob.

Eagles go on the attack and Billy puts in a great shot on goal which is pushed wide by the Bedwell goalie. Daniel makes a good run, turning the ball round a number of the Bedwell players, he links play with Joseph and Kieran B and then makes a shot on goal which narrowly misses. The goal kick is taken and Jakob reacts well to another quick break by Bedwell making a great blocking save.

Brandon, Billy, Daniel and Jack are working well together and put a great group of passes together before allowing Billy another shot; again, just wide!

The final whistle comes – it’s 5-0 and the result doesn’t really do justice to the really good work that the boys have done! There has been some good football from both of the teams! Well done.
