The EBBs were back in County Cup action this weekend after a long break due to the Christmas holiday and the exceptional Alps like Snow conditions that nearly brought the entire country to its knees. The opposition, Hertford Town Youth who were rumoured to be a very good team. Playing at their home ground, the EBBs lined up as shown below.

1st Half Starting Formation

The weather was overcast but still and cold. Pre-match talk was about the change in the boys playing positions and the tasks for each player. EBBs were urged to close the opposition down and to test the goalkeeper at any opportunity. Following the pre-match checks by the referee; explanation of the rules and warning that cards will be issued; the EBBs kicked off the match at 10:08 on the bigger pitch and playing up hill. EBBs pressed on but Hertford came back and were vocally encouraged on the sideline by their coaching team to win the second ball. EBBs defence stayed strong but Hertford continued to pressurize with Sam being the first goalkeeper to make a catch.

In the ninth minute, as EBBs tried to push out, there was a gaping hole in the middle of EBBs defence. Two of the Hertford players seemed to be in off-side position when the ball came back to them. One of them squeezed the ball pass Sam to make it 0-1.

Hertford coaching team continued to be very vocal from the sideline. Hertford continued to play the better football. At times EBBs lost their shape. By the tenth minute, Charley had to leave the field of play due to some commotion. Harry came on for Charley and moved up front with Stuart dropping to right back. There was a need for Sam and the back four to communicate. Gradually, EBBs began to play their usual football with Marcus and Jake overlapping on the left wing. For a period, EBBs played the better football with Stuart intercepting well and sending the ball back. Harry was making his usual runs into the box. EBBs continued to tighten the screw. Kyle had a shot that came off the woodwork. EBBs finally found their form and started distributing the ball well and showing their superiority. They continued to pile on the pressure. Cam took a short from way out but it went wide. Charley came on for Ethan who needed a breather. EBBs continued to move the ball well. Charley was driving forward from the right wing.

The anticipated drop in fitness level due to not having played competitive football for a while started to manifest itself. Good calls from Marcus for the ball. As EBBs pushed forward, the ball was often intercepted by Hertford. When Hertford broke through, Sam came out early to catch the ball. Kyle had another shot and truly tested the Hertford goalkeeper who caught well. Hertford played the physical game. They are  physically stronger and used it to effect by barging the EBBs off the ball. Kyle found himself at the end of one of those barges, went down and had to come off. Oscar continued to intercept and send the ball back. EBBs continued to pressurize and squeeze Hertford from the left flank. There was not enough energy in the EBBs to finished. Just before half-time, Hertford broke through and had a shot with Sam catching well.

The half-time talk was about how exceptional the EBBs had played and a lucky goal for Hertford from what seemed to be an off-side position. EBBs were urged to be steadfast as the goal will eventually come. "To keep their passing going". To ensure that the defence keeps the shape and not let any holes in defence. To work harder up front and to defend and attack corners.

Right from the start of the second half, EBBs supporter could see the determination in EBBs' play. They started to pass well. Ball to feet. More importantly, they were closing down Hertford very quickly. A great ball from Reuben to Charley who then drove it forward with Hertford cutting it out. Another great ball from Stuart to Charley who once again drove it forward, had a shot with the ball coming off a defender into the side netting. Cam took the corner and delivered the ball quite high, right in the middle of the six yard box. Scramble in the box with one of Hertford defenders putting the ball into their own net to level it at 1-1.

EBBs began to communicate well, urging each other to put on the pressure. Charley continued to drive the ball forward. Stuart sent the ball in. Marcus was onto it, he ran the ball and crossed it in with Harry latching onto it on the volley only for the ball to hit the upright and come it. That would have been a great goal. EBBs continued to play their simple ball and pile on the pressure. Oscar continued to intercept well and eliminate the danger. The play remained even for a while. Then Stuart got the ball, drove the ball forward and put it through to Ethan. Ethan shot with his left foot and sliced it. It would have been another great goal. EBBs began to pressurize again, Hertford hit back on the counter attack. Their striker had a shot which just missed going in. The game was being stretched but EBBs maintained their shape. EBBs defence continued to eliminate the danger. Charley won the ball and had a shot which went wide. Thirty seconds later, Charley had another shot on target, this time he drove the ball low with the Hertford goalkeeper putting his hands onto it and then mishandling the ball to let it through over the line. Referee was close by and made sure that the ball went over the line before blowing and awarding the goal; 2:1.

EBBs continued to put on the pressure with a great shot from Kyle but into the Hertford goalkeeper's hands. Then Harry had an open goal but shot wide. Towards the end of the match EBBs were getting tired and making mistakes. They started giving the ball away. Hertford had two chances but didn't capitalize from it. The score remained at 2-1 at the final whistle.

Another exciting match by two determined teams; albeit in different styles. Hertford, physical, EBBs ball to feet and good pass and move. As Phil said at the end of the match. EBBS "...showed determination, hard work and good football"; the score line did not reflect their hard work today. EBBS played well considering that some of the boys played out of their usual positions. EBBs will have to continue playing in this manner if they are to retain the cup. Well done EBBs for going through to the quarter final.

A week after exiting the League Cup, the County champions were back in action to defend the County Cup. The EBBs draw for the fourth round was against a very weak Bury Rangers Youth. Bury who are in Division 1 of the Mid Herts League have won only two of their games this season. It turned out to be one of those disheartening game for the losing team. However, it was the tonic the EBBs required after going out of the League Cup.

EBBs were away to Bury Rangers. It was a cold, damp and frosty morning with a 10:30 kick off on an almost flat ground. Pre-match talk was for EBBs to keep it simple and play in their usual style; simple passes and ball to feet. EBBs lines up as below but playing uphill and into the head wind.

In the second half, Bury continued to play the long ball and didn't follow up. EBBs were in their element, passing and moving but often caught off side. Despite going down to ten players due to Alfie sustaining an injury, Ethan going in goal and Sam playing out field, EBBs put another six goals pass Bury to make it 0:12. A clean sheet!!!

Well done EBBs for going through to the next round with the confidence boaster of 0:12 score line.

No.12 Sunday 6th December 2009 - "Royston Crow League Cup 3rd Round"

Wymondley Park …………………4                             Letchworth Eagles Blues ………………3

(Attacking Corners)

Amidst controversy and injuries the Blues capitulated to Wymondley in the third round of the Royston Crow League Cup. In so doing, they relinquished the Cup which they have held for the last six years. In what turned out to be a very exciting match indeed, EBBs started very well but then seemed to lose their mojo in the first half. The ensuing circumstances did not help matters as Wymondley played a very physical game.  This took its toll. At first, Sam was taken out by Wymondley's left winger; thus forcing Charley to stand in for him in goal. Following on, Kyle and Alfie suffered similar fate. At one point, the EBBs  were reduced to ten players. The 3-4 score line shows how close this match was.

At this time of the year and given last weeks playing condition at home, it was feared that it will be another muddy occasion. However, on arrival to Lucas Lane, Wymondley's home ground, the pitch, having just been played on, was slightly muddy but not in such a bad condition as anticipated given that there was overnight rain. The ground was flat which suits the EBBs. The sun was out but it was cold and windy. For the 13:00 kick off, EBBs were now in their familiar 4-4-2 formation with Sam in goal, Tommy, Oscar, Charley and Stuart as the back four; Kyle, Reuben, Cam and Jake as the midfielders; Ethan with Alfie as strikers and Marcus on the bench. Pre-match talk was for the boys to use the greener patches of the pitch; to keep it simple; to keep moving and for the strikers to play as a pair.

EBBs kicked off, playing against strong head wind. Right from kick off, EBBs attacked from their right flank with a Wymondley defender putting the ball out for a corner. EBBs made a good start but after three minutes, from an opportunistic ball, Wymondley attacked, had a shot to forced Sam to put the ball out for a corner.  Gradually, Wymondley started to pressurize the EBBs with the wind in Wymondley's favour, they were getting more of the ball, playing the better football and forcing EBBs to make errors. EBBs seemed to play nervously. Wymondley's back four maintained their line. Sam was made to work hard. Wymondley were winning the majority of the free kicks. Ten minutes into the game, a Wymondley free kick from a long range, narrowly missed as it went over the cross bar. EBBs continued to struggle with controlling the ball. Their supporters on the side line anticipating one of their classic moves. When the EBBs attacked, the Wymondley goalkeeper made good calls and was way out to clear the ball. Halfway through the first half, Alfie seem to have picked up a knock, Marcus came on for Alfie, Jake switched for Alfie with Marcus on the left mid field.

Wymondley goalkeeper was sending long balls as they continued to pressurize the EBBs. The game was becoming tough for the EBBs who seemed to lose their flare and usual sparkle. In the nineteenth minute, from a not well taken corner by Wymondley, EBBs conceded an own goal, 1-0, to give Wymondley the lead. The wind continued to cause havoc whilst Wymondley continued to pile on the pressure. Within three minutes of their first goal and from a good passing move on their right flank, Wymondley hit the back of EBBs net to increase their lead by 2 goals. EBBs now had a mountain to climb. Heads dropped and communication out of the window.

Wymondley seemed to be winning the throw-ins.  Twenty six minutes into the match, the ball came to Sam, he caught it. Wymondley's number 15, ran into Sam and kneed him. Sam went down; after being attended to, he could not continue so Charley had to go in goal thus forcing a change in the EBBs line up and no substitute. In the twenty-ninth minute, Stuart sent a long ball; Ethan was onto it and from a great individual effort, put the ball beyond Wymondley's goalkeeper to bring the score to 2-1. Not long after Ethan's goal, Kyle sustained a knock and had to leave the field of play thus reducing the EBBs to 10 players. As play continued, EBBs front players were being caught off side, time and time again. Wymondley continued to play the long ball and put EBBs under pressure until half time.

The EBBs were encouraged by the coaching team at half time; to remain focused; win every header and every tackle; to keep it simple and win every challenge. Also, to keep it tight at the back and not to be afraid. For the second half, Charley remained in goal; Tommy, Oscar, Reuben and Stuart as the back four; Alfie, Kyle, Cam and Marcus in mid field with Jake and Ethan up front. Right from the restart, EBBs played their usual football. Within seconds of the restart, the EBBs hit the side netting. They won a corner, EBBs pushed up. Cam delivered the corner well but Wymondley cleared and counter attacked. Wymondley were not closed down quickly, EBBs' defence was exposed, Charley came out early for the ball but Wymondley's number 10 lobbed the ball over Charley to further increase their lead; 3-1.

Wymondley's players were now rearing to go, they could not wait for the restart whistle to blow and were quick in closing down the EBBs.  On EBBs left flank, Tommy and Marcus became lively with good overlaps. Marcus was quick and controlled the ball well.  With two goals up, Wymondley could now afford to play the delay tactics and they did it well. At one point, their coach walked onto the field of play and had a long conversation with the referee. EBBs gave away cheap free kicks. Marcus continued to work overtime on the left flank with Tommy. On one such move, Marcus had the ball, sent it to Tommy, turned and run in to the space ahead of him with Tommy sending the ball back immediately to Marcus. He ran it and crossed the ball in; forcing Wymondley defender to send the ball out for a corner.

Wymondley's goalkeeper continued to come out early to catch or clear the ball. Rightly or wrongly, EBBs continued to be caught off side. Wymondley continued to play the long ball. EBBs won a free kick, Cam took it. Alfie got his head onto it but it went out for a goal kick.  EBBs started to push up. Charley began sending the long balls. Kyle won one such ball and sent it to Ethan who had a shot into the goalkeeper's hand. Both teams now locked horns, with the EBBs closing down Wymondley much quicker. The game became stretched. The temperature dropped as the sun lowered in the horizon and blocked by clouds. Marcus was fouled, he took the free kick quickly to Ethan who was now in the box. Ethan was on to it but was taken down to earn the EBBs a penalty. Ethan took the penalty very well to bring down the lead to 3-2.

EBBs began to liven up. Marcus had a chance and took a shot but Wymondley's alert goalkeeper denied a goal. The game continued to be stretched from end to end. Charley was forced to make some good saves. On the hour mark, an EBBs attack from the left wing saw Marcus put a great cross into the box. Ethan jumped high and connected with his head to level the game at 3-3 and earn him a hat trick. Game on! Both teams were now determined. EBBs pushed forward, Wymondley's goalkeeper continued to make the early call and put his name on the ball each time EBBs attacked.  With minutes to go before full time. Wymondley put a through ball. EBBs did not close down their forward, at least three EBBs player stood and watched as Wymondley's forward struck the ball well into EBBs net to make it 4-3. EBBs, once again started to play their football. They had a chance to level again when Wymondley's goalkeeper made a mistake. He released a ball which Stuart headed back over the goalkeeper. The ball was rolling into goal but the goalkeeper was quick in rectifying his mistake. Then Marcus had an open goal, his shot went wide.

Quite a mixed bag for the EBBs this weekend. At times they played brilliantly and other times, lack any kind of punch. Half hearted tackles. Inability to close down the opposition. It was very noticeable that for the majority of the free kicks Wymondley were awarded, EBBs did not form a wall. Although they capitulated to the physical intimidation, they did not relinquish the cup without fighting. They rallied in the second half and played the better football. It just wasn't their day as some of the decisions did not go their way. Like last week when Sam was the twelfth player for the EBBs, the Wymondley goalkeeper was their twelfth player. He was the key factor in taking Wymondley to the next round of the Cup. He had a very good game. He ran out early, each time, to clear or catch the ball and in so doing denied the EBBs a victory and hence out of the League Cup.

No.11 Sunday 29th November 2009 - "Mud! Glorious Mud!"

Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………3                              Ashwell Academicals………………1
(Cam 10', Reuben 35', OG 36') Sam MOM                     (Right Winger 19')

(Mud Kung Fu?)

Due mainly in part to the recent bad weather conditions, the EBBs have not played competitive football for some weeks now. The continued bad weather, overnight heavy rain and hail stones early on Sunday morning, threatened yet another postponement. The EBBs were determined to play come rain or shine and so they did in what proved to be a very heavy and well cut up pitch on their home ground. The EBBs are so used to playing on the proverbial velvet carpet, this was an opportunity to get some practice for playing on heavy and muddy conditions as we move into the winter months. This then was a return match for an earlier encounter with Ashwell Academicals in which the EBBs beat them with a score line of 4-2. As usual, Ashwell raised their game to make this encounter an exciting one indeed.

Pre-match talk was about the mud and how the ball would move and some change in tack from the EBBs usual play. To defend set plays well but fairly and equally to attack set plays. The rain had subsided but with dark clouds looming around on the first really cold weekend of the season, the EBBs lined up in their usual formation. Starting line up; Sam in goal, Tommy, Oscar, Charley and Stuart as the back four; midfield consisting of Jake, Alli, Cam and Marcus; with Harry and Reuben up front. Ethan and Alfie were on the bench.

Ashwell kicked off, playing down hill. EBBs pushed up immediately and started using the wings. When the ball came back, Charley cleared well. You could not tell that the EBBs hadn't played competitive match for three weeks. Within two minutes of starting, Marcus narrowly missed scoring from a great interplay between the two forwards and himself as the ball came to him in acres of space. In the seventh minute, EBBs defence did not release the ball quickly enough; one touch two many and the ball was lost to the opposition. Ashwell pushed the ball to their right flank from where a shot was unleashed. An Ashwell supporter nearby was heard saying, "great goal!", how the ball did not go into the net remains a mystery as I also thought that it was definitely going in, that's football for you!  Sam might have got his hand onto it as the referee gave a corner.

Jake was making good runs on the right wing. Sam was vocal and making calls to let the defenders know that it was his ball. On occasions, Sam was the twelfth player for the EBBs today as he came way out to kick the ball back into Ashwell's half of the pitch. Stuart had a throw in to Reuben who used his strength to protect the ball and then forced another throw in. Quality passing football from Alli to Stuart to Jake and a deadly cross from Jake into the box saw Cam jump high and side footed the ball into the net to make it 1-0. Excellent passing football with a killer cross from Jake and a quality team goal as the end product. It doesn't get better than this.

Good man to man marking from the EBBs. Alli was distributing well and had a shot on target with Ashwell goalkeeper having to make a save. EBBs continued to use the wings with good interplay between the midfielders and the defence. Charley was making his usual runs to cover and clear the danger at the back. EBBs continued to dominate the game and pressurize Ashwell with the EBBs' back four on the half way line.

In the nineteenth minute, Ashwell capitalised on an error in the EBBs defence. They sent the ball out wide to their quick diminutive right winger who ran the ball and let rip from about twenty eight yards on the right flank. The goal was reminiscent of Marcus' goal against Bedwell Rangers. There was no way Sam could have saved it. A well taken strike and an excellent goal from Ashwell to equalise, 1-1. Game on!

Ethan and Alfie came on for Reuben and Alli with Ethan going out to right midfield. On the restart, EBBs were quickly back in their element. The ball went wide to Tommy who played it to Marcus. Marcus then played it to Harry who beat his man and sent it to Cam. Cam pushed the ball forward and had a shot which narrowly missed the goal. Ashwell counter attacked but Charley again eliminated the danger. EBBs attacked again and had a period of long possession of the ball which culminated with Alfie taking a shot. Ashwell goalkeeper caught the ball but Alfie had already been flagged offside. Another counter attack from Ashwell, saw them break through EBBs defence with their striker eyeballing Sam. When he shot, Sam jumped high to send the ball out for a corner and in so doing kept EBBs in the game. At 1-1 Ashwell raised the bar and started to put more pressure on the EBBs who seemed to be flagging and lost their shape. Stuart drove the ball forward and had a shot which the Ashwell goalkeeper caught well. The match was evenly balanced when the half time whistle was blown.

Half time talk was for the EBBs to counteract the effect of the muddy and heavy condition. To learn from playing on such surface as prevalent at this time of the year and to pass the ball to the feet. A reiteration of what to do with set plays. Also to use the channels and to get the crosses into the six yard box.

Alli and Reuben came back on for Jake and Marcus for the start of the second half. A tactical switch was made with Harry going to left midfield, Ethan to right midfield, Alli and Cam in centre midfield with Reuben and Alfie as strikers. Ashwell also changed formation to 5-1-4, an unusual formation which signalled a more defensive approach with fire power up front.

Ashwell started well. EBBs seemed to lose the wind in their sail. Oscar played the safe ball. Three minutes into the second half, out of the blues, excuse the pun! EBBs played their best passing football ever. Alfie played the ball safe to Stuart who beat his man and sent the ball out wide to Ethan, the ball came back to Stuart. He drove it on the right flank and crossed it into the six yard box. Reuben who was now in the box, close to the near post to Stuart, coolly turned his head to the centre of the pitch, with both arms stretched towards Ashwell's goal mouth, flicked his head onto the ball to head it into the net to make it 2-1. It was an excellent cross and an elegant finish to net the EBBs a great team goal. Another contender for the goal of the season.

Within seconds of the last goal, there was a similar move, a great run and an almost identical cross from Ethan into the six yard box. There were at least four EBBs player queuing up to put the ball in the net but were relieved of their duty as an Ashwell player headed the ball into his own net to make it 3-1. Ashwell continued to play well and managed to hit the EBBs' upright, Sam was quick onto the ball when it came off the upright. A great shot from Ashwell's number 10 was palmed out by Sam for a corner. Ashwell pushed harder with EBBs seeming to lose it a bit and  Sam being made to work harder. They went through the EBBs like hot knife through butter. The mud was taking it's toll. A mistake helped Ashwell to break through and again, their forward was one on one with Sam who came well out and missed the ball. A great chance for Ashwell to pull one back but the shot, which should have gone into the empty goal, went across the goal mouth. Tense moment when Sam slipped on the mud and fell whilst he was kicking the ball out.

Ashwell continued to dominate the second half. They were not closed down by the EBBs. Ashwell had another attack in which the ball went across the goal  month. They were urged to push up. There were occasional attacks from the EBBs. When EBBs moved the ball they move it very well despite the mud. On the hour mark, Ethan had a shot which narrowly missed. Not long after that he was hacked down. Charley drove the free kick low. When the ball reached Alfie, he turned and shot with the ball coming out wide from Ashwell and once again EBBs were under counter attack. Sam caught the ball comfortably. Ashwell's number 10 who was having a good game pushed hard. During one attack, Charley closed him down. As they both chased the ball, they went sprawling on the mud. It was an act of true sportsmanship when Ashwell's number 10 gave Charley a hand to get off the muddy grass. In the closing minutes, Cam and Jake came on for Tommy and Charley. EBBs had another good attack but did not capitalize. On Ashwell's counter attack, Oscar intercepted. With seconds to go a mistake in EBBs defence gifted the ball to Ashwell's number 10. Again, it was just him and Sam. When he shot, Sam just managed to get his hands on the ball which then hit the upright and went out for a corner. As the ball came in from the corner, the final whistle was blown.

Final score was 3-1. Well done boys for the excellent quality play against a very determined opposition in a heavy and muddy condition. The intelligent class act in the EBBs movements was a joy to watch and the team crafted goals to perfection is as good as they get. More of the same in the upcoming Cup fixture please!!!!!!! Weather permitting! ???

No.10 Sunday 8th November 2009 - "Royston Crow League Cup 2nd Round"

Biggleswade United ………………0                             Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………3
                                (Kyle 8', 56', Alfie 29') Oscar MOM

(One minute silence.)

As the current Royston Crow League Cup holder, the EBBs were away from the rigors of League matches to concentrate on retaining the League Cup. Their opponent for the second round, Biggleswade United who are currently languishing at the bottom of the Division 1 League Table have lost all but one of their matches this season. Like all EBBs opponents this season, everyone wants to beat the County Champions and League Cup holder and Biggleswade certainly gave the EBBs a run for their money in this encounter. There is nothing like a Cup Tie to bring out the best in teams and this one was no exception. This was an exciting match which saw Biggleswade United hit the crossbar twice and missed several chances. Biggleswade were determined and showed character but in the end EBBs superiority, particularly in the second half, shown through to give them a 0-3 win. The goal margin could have been bigger was it not for Biggleswade goalkeeper who was superb in ensuring that the ball was kept out in numerous EBBs' attacks.

Given last weeks appalling weather conditions, today's conditions seemed luxurious in comparison. Although autumnal, the ground was flat, breaks in the cloud, slightly cold with the corner flags blowing in the slight wind. Pre-match talk was for the boys to stay warm, switch on and make good use of the flat ground. To ignore any previous results, stay focused on today's match and to play their usual football and demonstrate it.

Being a remembrance Sunday, there was a minute silence to remember and honour those who paid the ultimate price. EBBs kicked off following the one minute's silence. The familiar 4-4-2 formation but with some of the boys playing in positions that are out of their comfort zone. An initial line up which saw Sam in goal, Tommy, Oscar, Cam, Stuart as the back four; a midfield of Kyle, Jake, Reuben and Marcus, with Harry and Alfie up front and Ethan with Charley on the bench.

Right from the start, EBBs were on top of their game with the ball going wide from Oscar to Marcus who beat his marker and passed it to Harry. Harry then ran the ball along the left flank and crossed it into the eighteen yard box; Kyle who was running in just missed putting the ball inside the net. Moments later a similar play from the right flank, saw Harry miss putting the ball in the net when Kyle crossed it in. EBBs continued to pile on the pressure and had another chance when a great pass from Alfie found Kyle, he turned and shot but Biggleswade goalkeeper caught well. Then Stuart drove the ball forward, had a shot but it went over the crossbar. By now the EBBs had started their demonstration football, it was no surprise when their first goal came, quality play, when Jake passed the ball to Reuben, Reuben passed it out to Marcus on the wing, Marcus lobbed it to Harry up front on the wing. Harry crossed the ball in with Alfie and Kylie running it. It was a question of which one of them was going to put the ball in the net. Kyle slotted the ball into the net to make it 0-1 to the EBBs. Seconds later, the Biggleswade goalkeeper was forced to make yet another great save as Alfie tested him. Reuben took a short that went wide. EBBs maintained their line at the back.

A momentary lapse in EBBs concentration saw Biggleswade having too much time on the ball. When Biggleswade attached, Oscar and Cam covered well. Oscar was working overtime to eliminate the danger by chasing down the attacker. Both sides started to up their game with some good passing and movements. About half way through the first half, a chance came for Biggleswade when an un-weighted pass by EBBs mid-field did not get to its target. One of Biggleswade forward was quick onto the ball; he had a shot which went across the goal mouth; the ball narrowly missed going into the net. Suddenly Biggleswade stepped up their game. They started using the width but EBBs defence continued to shut them down. Another great movement from the EBBs nearly netted them another goal when Kyle crossed the ball in and Harry got his foot onto it. The ball hit the top left corner of the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

Pressure and counter pressure from both sides. Biggleswade defended in number, too many red shirts in their eighteen yard box but when they attacked, they pushed out in numbers. Twenty minutes into the match, Biggleswade shook the woodwork when they hit the EBBs crossbar for the second time. It would have been a great goal, unlucky for them. Again, this boosted their confidence.

EBBs counter attacked with Marcus now on the ball, he passed it to Harry who beat his man and switched the ball out to the right with Kylie running onto it; the Biggleswade goalkeeper came out early to smother the ball.

Charley came on for Jake but on the right midfield with Alfie moving into centre midfield. Stuart was working hard to win the ball and driving the ball forward. He ran the ball and sent it to Kylie who crossed it in to force a corner. Cam took the corner, when the ball came, Charley got his head onto it with the ball going out for a goal kick. In the next attack, Stuart sent the ball, Charley was onto it, ran the ball and had a shot come cross with Harry running onto it. The ball narrowly missed going into the net and Harry just missed helping it on.

With just one nil down, Biggleswade supporters encouraged their players to try to bring them back into the game. Biggleswade were urged to go for the second ball. By now they were putting pressure onto the EBBs. With just seconds before half time, Reuben had an opportunity and took a good shot; the Biggleswade goalkeeper made yet another great save to put the ball out for a corner. Cam took the corner and lifted the ball quite high. When the ball came into the box, Alfie headed it into the net to make it 0-2. A great corner and a great goal. Inside two seconds of the restart, the half time whistle went.

Half time talk was for the EBBs to play their simple football and not to give the ball away by having too many touches. To keep the ball. To test the goalkeeper whenever the opportunity presented itself. From the restart, to play like they did in the first fifteen minutes of the first half.

Jake and Ethan came on for Reuben and Harry for the half time kick off. The sun started to shine through the breaking clouds as the half time restart whistle was blown. Ethan was quick to chase the ball down as Biggleswade kicked off. Biggleswade pushed hard. Stuart tried to find Charley on the right, ball came back. Great pass from Tommy trying to find Marcus on the left but Biggleswade intercepted. Biggleswade continued to push the EBBs. Oscar upped his work rate and battled hard to ensure the danger was eliminated time and time again.

Biggleswade won a free kick about twenty five yards out. Sam did not have to worry as it went wide. Biggleswade continued to play well and pass the ball well. Each time EBBs pushed forward the ball came back. Gradually Sam was coming into play and was now having to make some saves. Reuben came back on to play in centre back position. As play progressed Ethan had a great cross which Stuart tried to put his head onto. EBBs were unlucky not to score from it. Given the way Biggleswade were playing, it was hard to see how they were at the bottom of the League. Again, Biggleswade were urged to win the second ball. EBBs back four continued to maintain their shape. Ethan had a left shot which went wide.

EBBs continued to make used of the width on both sides. Cam to Marcus to Harry who switched to the right flank to Charley, Charley drove the ball forward and tried to put it in the goal but the Biggleswade goalkeeper got his hand to it to send it wide. Another great save!

Alfie and Kyle came on for Cam and Stuart with Alfie moving into centre midfield and Kyle to the right. EBBs won a free kick on the left flank near the half way line. Reuben took it and bent the ball in towards goal. Jake hammered it with the ball going out for a goal kick. Oscar continued to make good clearances. Good ball from Sam to Marcus, Marcus sent the ball out to the corner flag with Harry onto it. The ball went out for a goal kick. EBBs won a throw in, Marcus took the throw. Alfie got the ball and passed it to Charley, Charley passed it to Kylie who scored from a very, very tight angle to make it 0-3 to the EBBs.  With a few minutes left to go, Biggleswade hit the woodwork and were very unlucky not to score. Biggleswade pushed hard and played good football till the final whistle.

This then was a match in which some of the EBBs played out of their comfort zone. They made the Biggleswade goalkeeper work hard and to make some excellent saves. This proved in the end to be an exciting match. All the boys worked hard this weekend and that includes Biggleswade. I'm certain if Biggleswade carry on playing the way they did in this match, they will soon start rising up the League table. This is yet another example of how not to under estimate the opposition. Well done EBBs for going through, convincingly and with a clean sheet, to the next round of the League Cup.

(Looking for the killer pass!)

No.9 Sunday 1st November 2009 - "A Cold, Wet, Windy & Wash-out Match"

Bedwell Rangers………………0                                  Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………1
                                 (Marcus 46') Marcus MOM

(Bedwell Rangers boxed in under horrid weather.)

Eagle's supporters were fixated on their mobile phones this Sunday morning in anticipation of a call or message to say that this weekend match was cancelled. Not on your Nelly! Despite the heavens opening up this morning and the gusty wind, the match was to go on.  And behold, on arrival at Chells Park playing fields, the under 13s were just finishing their match. The goalkeeper's standing spot looked like a swamp. As players and supporters arrived, a grounds man was busy mopping up one end of the pitch with an industrial roller sponge.

The Eagles Blues Boys (EBBs) beat Bedwell Rangers 4-2 in last season campaign for the League Cup in a closely fought match. EBBs superiority only came through in the later stages of that match. Weather aside, there were some similarities between this match and that of the Cup encounter. Bedwell Rangers are a good strong team. They have talented players and won promotion to division one for this season. They have drawn 1-1 with Buntingford Cougars this season.

Pre-match talk was about how the ball will behave given the atrocious, wet, windy, cold and muddy weather condition.  As usual, EBBs were urged to incorporate this in their play; to use the necessary parts of the pitch. The initial 4-4-2 formation saw Sam in goal, Jake, Cam, Charley and Tommy as the back four; midfield consisting of Kyle, Ali, Alfie and Marcus; with Ethan and Reuben up front and Oscar on the bench.

EBBs kicked off. Right from kick off, EBBs put immediate pressure on Bedwell Rangers as Reuben sent the ball out wide to Kyle. Kyle made a great turn to beat his man and bring the ball on the inside. He passed the ball to Ethan, Rangers defense were onto Ethan with the ball going out for a corner. Cam delivered the ball well into the box with Alli trying to make contact but couldn't quite reach.

Fourteen minutes into the match, with EBBs in their form, Reuben put the ball in Rangers' net; the goal was ruled offside.

The weather condition started to impact the play. The ball was hardly bouncing in the wet and muddy condition. A mistake in the EBBs defense in not clearing the ball early enough forced Sam to make a catch. Bedwell Rangers had a corner, with wind blowing across field. Worrying times.

Alli was making good tackles in midfield. Rangers started to play well. Attacks and counter attacks. Multiple throw ins for Rangers on their right flank as they pushed forward.

EBBs boxed in Bedwell Rangers on their right flank. Good interplay between Kyle and Ethan with ball going out for a corner. Again, Cam delivered the ball well into the box despite the high wind. Bedwell headed the ball out. Charley intercepted the ball and sent it back. There were so many red shirts and no blue shirts inside the box.  Kyle followed up with another good delivery inside the box but Rangers sent it out for yet another corner.

By now it was raining hard. Players and spectators alike were soaked. The ball bounced awkwardly due to the down pour. EBBs defense were on their toes to clear well.

Good passing by the EBBs, Reuben to Ethan. Then a triangular pass between Marcus, Tommy and Reuben.  So beautiful to watch each time they pull it off. The ball was by now frequently  going out of play; at pace and assisted by the high wind.

EBBs began to test Rangers' goalkeeper who was catching well. Attack and counter attacks from both side with both goalkeepers having to make good saves.

Twenty minutes into the match, Oscar came on for Cam in defense. Cam moved to midfield for Alfie who then moved up front.  Marcus was prolific with his runs on the left wing. Time and time again he beat his marker and passed the ball well. Good passes to Alli and the occasional overlap between Marcus and Tommy.  With EBBs now playing well, Charley drove the ball forward and threaded it to Ethan who took a shot to force a good save from the Rangers' goalkeeper.

Bedwell Rangers' left back was marking Kyle very well. He did not give Kyle any space at all. From an EBBs corner, delivered to the front post, the ball came out to Charley who took a shot, the ball came out again for Charley's second shot which came back out for the third time.      Bedwall Rangers counter attacked, Sam caught the ball and then came the howler. Sam threw the ball out. It did not get to it's target. Thud, as the wet conditions stopped the ball dead. Rangers' striker was quick onto it. He was now one on one with Sam. He tried to put the ball in the far right corner but Sam got down to smother the ball. Phew! that would have been a costly mistake had Sam not redeemed himself. He did make a good save of it.

Bedwell Rangers won a free kick from about 25 yards out. It was now very windy, on par with last week. The free kick was well taken but Sam caught it very well. Rangers pushed forwards with EBBs defense maintaining their shape and defending well. 0-0 at half time.

Half time talk again revolved round the treacherous weather conditions. Praise for the boys for their hard work under the circumstances. To keep the work rate up, to follow up the ball up front and to mark well at the back.

One change in formation for the second half with Reuben coming on for Ethan. EBBs were once again passing well. One touch too many in EBBs defense and the ball was lost to Bedwell Rangers who were now counter attacking. Charley was on hand to clear the danger. Great tackling!!!

Bedwell Rangers now had successive corners but was eventually cleared by Marcus. A sharp intake of breath as the ball came back out.  Bedwell Rangers' striker took a shot that went right across the goal mouth and narrowly missing the far post to go out for a goal kick.

EBBs started to work a bit harder. Shouts of "hand ball" by the EBBs player went amiss. Reuben had a shot and the goalkeeper caught it well. Bedwell Rangers came under more pressure. Tommy put a great ball in which nearly slipped through the goalkeepers hand. Cam took another corner and delivered well into the box. Reuben got his head onto it but headed it wide of the post.

Another EBBs' mistake at the back, during a counter attack, saw Sam earning his keep as Bedwell Rangers' prominent striker shot the ball well. Twenty six minutes into the match saw some more good passing for the EBBs. Reuben passed to Marcus and Marcus to Alfie who was now inside the eighteen yards box. Alfie ran the ball. As he was about to take a shot, he was floored inside the area. Alfie took the spot kick from way outside the designated spot because the designated spot was very muddy. Alfie's shot skimmed the goalkeepers' right hand down post to go out for a goal kick.

EBBs continued to maintain their shape at the back. Kyle was making good clearance of the ball. Gradually EBBs started to show their superior play. Bedwell Rangers lost their shape. Charley sent the ball out towards the left corner flag. Marcus was onto it. Marcus sent that ball in a parabolic curve into far right corner of the net to make it 0-1. I'm still not sure if it was an intended shot or a cross but I heard someone from the opposition side mutter, "it's a goal!", whilst the ball was still in flight. This is definitely the third contender for goal of the season.

On occasions EBBs put themselves under unnecessary pressure. Charley was making great runs from the back. He drove the ball forward, had a shot which skimmed the side net as it went out of play. Ethan had a shot with the Rangers' goalkeeper making a catch. Charley and Oscar continued to make clearances at the back with Sam coming out early to make catches.

Towards the closing stages, Bedwell pushed for the equalizer. There was a tactical switch to strengthen the midfield and thus protect the one nil lead. Still Bedwell had another chance but didn't take it. EBBs gave away a free kick inside Ranger's half. The ball was well cleared when the free kick was taken.

Alli, Marcus and Reuben tested the Bedwell goal keeper. He kept the ball out. Bedwell Rangers were now sending long balls, trying to hit their target striker.  Oscar and Alli were heading the ball back to the opposition side. Kyle and Jake had good interchange on the right wing. EBBs worn a corner, Cam delivered as usual but the whistle went for an infringement in the box. EBBs were now on top of their game. Jake sent the ball out to Kyle, he passed it and moved into space, got the ball back and passed it to Cam who took a short, a low drive to his left.  It slipped through the Bedwell Rangers goal keeper's hand and went out for a corner. As Cam took  the corner,  final whistle went.

So it ended 0-1 to the Eagles on a closely fought match in the first half but with the Eagles showing their superiority in the second half. Bedwell rangers had three clear chances but were unlucky not to capitalize on it. EBBs made use of the width and that is where their goal came from. The score line for the EBBs could have been more had they followed up through balls that were put to the front; as the ball thudded to the ground due to the wet and muddy ground. Under the conditions, EBBs did themselves proud. Marcus is still to tell everyone if it was a shot or a cross. Keep up the good work lads.

No.8 Sunday 25th October 2009 - "Strength in Numbers"

Ashwell Academicals………………2                             Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………4
(3', 33')                              (Harry 6', Alfie 15', Cam 15', Kyle 19') Harry MOM

(Good head!)

EBBs were away this weekend to Ashwell Academicals. The Eagles have not lost to Ashwell for as far back as I can remember and certainly not in the last two seasons. Is the table about to be turned? Of course not but the conditions were not favorable to the Eagles this morning as the weather conditions threatened to spoil the party during the second half.

Pre-match warm up included a tackling session. Tackling was thrown out of the window during last week's encounter with Buntingford. The pre-match talk revolve round the hard ground, the prevailing windy condition and the need to follow up the ball inside the six yard box for any spilled ball; to hold up the ball up front and to use the width.

With the squad strengthened this weekend, the Eagles had the luxury of two players on the bench. The starting 4-4-2 formation saw Sam in goal, Marcus, Charley, Oscar and Stuart as the back four; midfield consisting of Harry, Alli, Cam and Jake; with Ethan and Reuben up front and for the first time this season, two players on the bench, Alfie and Kyle.

Eagles kicked off, playing down slope with a tail wind which by now had picked up. Right from kick-off, the Eagles were bearing down on Ashwell. Harry and Reuben made early runs into the box. Cam had an early shot on goal with Ashwell goalkeeper having to make a good save to keep the ball out. Oscar was tackling hard and making great runs to stand his man and cut out the dangerous ball. Three minutes into the match saw a mistake in EBB's defense. Sam was sold short by a back pass that he was never going to reach. "Shall I go or shall I stay?", as he back tracked to cover the goal, meanwhile the Ashwell front man who now had the ball, shot it to the far right of the net to make it 0-1. One nil up and Ashwell were buoyed up, one of their front man held the ball up well with the rest streaming forward. They had a shot in which Sam caught well. Sam then unleashed a long ball which bounced behind Ashwell's last defender. Ashwell's goalkeeper came out to catch the ball; meanwhile Harry was making a great run towards the keeper. True to form, as predicted by Phil in the pre-match talk, the keeper caught the ball and dropped it. Harry's run paid off as he tucked the ball into the net to equalize. Someone was indeed really listening during the pre-match talk!

Not long after the equalizer, EBBs started to use the width. The ball was going out wide to their left flank. Marcus passed the ball on the edge of the touch line to Harry who then ran it towards goal, had a left foot shot which tested the keeper. Ashwell were boxed in for long periods on both flanks but they were no push over. At times they did string some good passes together. Their number 10 striker at one point had a good turn and shot from outside the area but it went out for a goal kick.

Ten minutes into the match, Alfie and Kyle came on for Alli and Reuben. The wind was getting stronger and blowing downhill. EBBs continued to move the ball well. Fours minutes after coming on, Alfie received a great pass and put the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-2 to the EBBs. Straight from the restart, Jake and Ethan exchanged some good passes. When Jake took a shot, the ball ricocheted from an Ashwell player to meet Cam who then volleyed it over the goalkeeper's head to go into the back of the net to make it 1-3; all that in just under a minute after Alfie's goal.

Ashwell had a corner; Eagles didn't attack the ball to clear it. Ashwell player got his foot to it but sent it out for a goal kick.  Stuart threaded the ball to Kyle. Kyle was about to run the ball when he was fouled inside the area to earn the Eagles a spot kick. Kyle took it and made it look easy. 1-4 it remained till half time with the EBBs playing the superior game and putting Ashwell under the cosh. At the same time, there was some tactical switch at the back to re-enforce the defense.

At half time, EBBs were reminded of the strong wind and the fact that they will now be playing uphill and against the strong head wind. They were asked to encourage each other and to use the wings. To play their football and to hold the ball up front. Some tactical changes saw Reuben drop back to mid-field to accompany Alli and Kyle to right back.

As soon as the half time start whistle was blown, Ashwell had the sail in their wind. They moved the ball better.  EBBs came under pressure. Ball was everywhere. One could see the ball being blown back as soon as it was kicked. EBBs were now under the cosh. Two minutes after the start of the second half, Ashwell won a corner. The ball was well delivered into the box. Eagles did not attack the ball, Ashwell got the ball into the EBBs' net to make it 2-4. Now Ashwell were really buoyed up. Eagles were boxed it. Every time the ball went up front, it came straight back into the EBBs' half. Ashwell had a shot into the side netting and some of their supporter on the opposite side though that it had gone in. Sam was now having to make saves upon saves as the ball kept coming back. Charley, as always was clearing the ball.

EBBs won a couple of corners and again the ball was not attacked, Ethan made runs with the ball but Ashwell defended well. At times the game was stretched. Harry had a shot at goal which was blocked by the Ashwell defense. Kyle took a free kick from just outside the eighteen yard box with the ball just going over the cross bar. With the ball bouncing unpredictably, EBBs lost their shape. Ashwell seem to grow in confidence. Ashwell had a free kick from just outside the half way line but Stuart headed it away.

Ashwell continued to push hard. Ball was mostly in EBBs half but with the occasional counter attacks from EBBs. A free kick by the EBBs from their own half saw the ball delivered well to Ethan. With Ethan now on the ball, he was tackled hard and brought down in what the spectators thought was inside the box. A free kick was given from the edge of the eighteen yard box. Oscar took the free kick and just missed scoring as he tried to put the ball in the far right hand corner of the net.

With about ten minutes to go, Ashwell seemed to lose the momentum they had in the first five minutes of the second half. EBBs front players were urged to hold the ball up.  EBBs battled hard to keep the ball out. There was a substitution to strengthen the EBBs defense. As the substitution was being made, the Ashwell team coach urged his players to see which of the EBBs players was coming on and going off.  He also urged them to go wide. EBBs had another corner, when the ball was delivered, again it was not attacked but when the ball came out to Oscar, he had a shot but the Ashwell goalkeeper caught the ball. Ashwell started getting space and taking free shots. They missed a few chances. Charley was heading the ball out. Mid field made a couple of mistakes, at times they just stood and watched the ball.  EBBs had another chance when Ethan lobbed the ball with the Ashwell goalkeeper just getting his hands to it. EBBs hanged on till the final whistle.

This was definitely a game of two halves in which the EBBs played their superior game in the first half and capitalized on it to win 2-4. Ashwell had the upper hand, in the second half, albeit wind assisted. EBBs tackled well and worked very hard in the second half against Ashwell and the wind. It was good to see the Eagles back in their winning ways. Good job Eagles!

No.7 Sunday 18th October 2009 - "Return of the Titans"

Letchworth Eagles Blues ………………0            Buntingford Cougars Blues        …………………2
Cam MOM                                        (13", 63")

(Defending)

In a weekend that was jam packed full of oddities (i) Chelsea were beaten by Aston Villa; (ii) Pepe Reina of Liverpool did not know which ball to catch, technically, a beach ball scored the goal against Liverpool as the beach ball had the last touch before the ball went into the net (Ok, Daren Bent helped it on the way); (iii) given that it was only three matches ago since the Eagles clashed with the Cougars in Buntingford with EBBs winning convincingly and showing why they are County Champions. This, the return match on Eagles turf being so soon, was to be a game of determination and the desire to win. It was the Cougars who won by 0-2 but only just.  The Cougars extracted their revenge on a cold Sunday morning with temperature down to 4o C and beautiful autumnal colours on the tree. How odd that the EBBs' first defeat of the season should be by the Cougars whom they beat convincingly in their previous encounter.

As in their previous encounter - EBBs were not at full strength.  With no player on the bench this weekend and some injuries, EBBs lined up in their usual 4-4-2 formation; Sam in goal, Tommy, Charley, Cam and Stuart as the back four; midfield consisting of Marcus, Alli, Reuben and Jake; with Harry and Ethan as strikers. The pre-match talk was encouragement for the boys to play their usual football and make use of the width.

Cougars kicked off with EBBs playing against the slope. Immediately, Cougars launched a long ball. The ball was intercepted as the EBBs went right on top of their game. Reuben pushed the ball out to Stuart on the wing who found Jake and Jake returned the ball to Stuart. Not long after this, there was a call for a hand ball outside the EBBs box. As expected, it was a long ball and EBBs escaped.

This was not the same Cougars team as in the last clash with the Eagles. Cougars were well organized and up for it. They were a bit more switched on and very communicative. They pushed hard and on occasion boxed in the EBBs. A second free kick from Cougars was deflected but Sam caught it well, likewise a third free kick. The one free kick from the EBBs in the first half did not have any EBBs shirt in the box to latch onto it. This typified the play up front. Cougars continued to deny the EBBs from playing their flowing football. Marcus delivered a great ball in the box, again there was no blues shirt to latch onto it.

Twelve minutes into the match saw the EBBs put some great passes together. They moved the ball well with Ethan slotting the ball into the back of the net but only to be flagged off-side. A minute later, EBBs pushed forward, squeezing in the Cougars. A long ball clearance from the Cougars with just one EBBs player in defense, coupled with a sloppy mistake in clearing the ball, saw the Cougars striker number 9 take a shot and as one was about to mutter "it's a goal!", the ball was in the back of the net to give the Cougars 0-1 lead. There was no way Sam could have stopped that ball.

About twenty minutes into the game the ball came out to Reuben who was about half-way between the eighteen yard box and the half way line. Reuben took a shot which most of the spectators thought was definitely going in but just skimmed the top of the cross bar.

Pressure from Cougars as they pushed and tried to box in the EBBs. Cougars kept returning the ball as there was no EBBs player up front in the eighteen yard box. Sam was made to work hard. A good strike from Cougar's number 10 was palmed out.

Two corners just before half time were well delivered by Cam, almost into the Cougars' goalkeeper's hands but the ball was not attacked. There was no Eagles player on the goal keeper. A loose ball from the fall out was not attacked. 0-1 to Cougars when the half time whistle went.

Half time team talk was to play the ball on the deck. To stop too many touches and play the ball to the corner flags and to mix it up a bit. To work hard up front.

In the second half EBBs continued to box in the Cougars. Some glimpses of what they do well. They played much better than in the first half. Voices of encouragement on the touchline from EBBS supporters. Sam releasing well to the wings but time and time again there was no EBBs player running in for the balls that were delivered into the eighteen yard box. The ball was not attacked. Tackles were half hearted. On occasions, EBBs put themselves under unnecessary pressure due to too many touches.

Again when the EBBs pushed forward, with just a few minutes left to the end of the match, Cam drove the ball into the eighteen yard box and was about to shoot when he was tackled badly and floored. As the play continued, the referee was informed to enable the game to be stopped so that Cam could be attended to. Now down to 10 players, from a dropped ball, with scrabble on the Cougars' goal mouth, the ball was not attacked enough. Cougars pushed the ball out to their left wing. EBBs lost their shape, Cougars skillful No. 10 striker ran the ball, beat his man, shot the ball into EBBs net to make it 0-2 to Cougars.

EBBs lost the match not because they did not play well but because there were some inconsistencies in their play. At times they did not close down the opposition. Several opportunities were missed. The Cougars' goal keeper was hardly tested. Corner balls were not attacked. When the ball arrived in the eighteen yard box, often there was no one there to play it. At times they looked like they were tired. Also with two players carrying an injury that did not help. On the day, they were beaten by a team who was more determined to win than the EBBs were.

(Given too much time on the ball)

No.6 Sunday 11th October 2009 - "Battle for the Summit"

Royston Celtic Whites………………2                          Letchworth Eagles Blues…………………2
(Harry 36', Jake 45') Oscar MOM
u12 blue
(Attacking formation.)

The battle to go top of the Under 12 Division 1 league table really began in earnest this weekend as the EBBs and Royston Celtic went head to head. The EBBs have won all their matches so far this season and so have Royston Celtic. However, Royston Celtic have not conceded a goal, well not until this weekend. The EBBs spoilt the party for Royston Celtic by putting two goals pass them. For about a period of 12 minutes, the EBBs were truly on top of the league when they were leading the encounter, initially by 0-1 and then later 0-2 but Royston Celtic pulled one back and later equalized to draw 2-2. So one a piece, that is enough to ensure that the EBBs remain top of the league table. However, Royston Celtic have a game in hand. For Royston Celtic to knock the EBBs off the top, they will have to beat the tough oppositions that the EBBs have beaten so far this season. Now, that is a tall order!

On the way to Royston, there was slight rain, memories of last season's fixture, in which it was windy and pouring with rain, surfaced. On reaching Royston, the rain had subsided. There was some chill in the air and some leaves on the pitch but the pitch was good. Pre-match talk revolved around the fact that Royston Celtic have remained un-beaten this season and for the EBBs to do what they do best and believe in what they have already achieved this season. Also emphasis for Royston Celtic to be closed down quickly and for there to be some defending from the front and to hold up the ball.

The line up for the usual 4-4-2 formation for this weekend saw Sam in goal, Tommy, Charley, Oscar and Stuart as the back four; midfield consisting of Marcus, Alli, Cam and Jake; with Harry and Reuben up front and Ethan on the bench.

Right from kickoff there was palpable sense of tension in the air and at the same time one could feel that this was going to be an exciting match by two good teams who were very determined. And so it proved as both teams battled hard in the first half. Royston Celtic tactics was to close down the EBBs quickly at whatever cost, so at times, there were three white shirts round a blue shirt. This meant that at times, EBBs wingers were unmarked. Despite Royston's tactics, there was a 40:60 ball possession to the EBBs. EBBs had more chances but didn't convert them. Royston Celtic had two good chances from free kicks that were given from outside the eighteen yard box. One was caught well by Sam and the wall did its job for the second. Royston Celtic had two corners in the first half with one being cleared just behind the front post and the second being over hit beyond the back post to go out for a goal kick.

Still nil all when the half time whistle went. EBBs were encouraged to play the ball on the ground and to use the width.

This they did to perfection in the second half to score two great goals. Harry was at the end  of some slick passing and movement to slot in the first and the second goal was  achieved by a master class in how the game should be played; EBBs  switched the ball quickly from left to right to find Jake just one on one with the keeper and so coolly slotted it into the net to make it 0-2.

EBBs continued to box in Royston Celtic with the defense pushing forward. Inability to hold the ball up front during a push forward saw the EBBs' forward lose the ball and gifted Royston Celtic with a counter attack from their left flank to score their first goal. Suddenly, there was some urgency in Celtic's play. Not long after their first goal, they equalized from not too dissimilar a mistake as the first one. A counter attack to make it 2-2 at the final whistle.

This indeed was an exciting match by two very good teams. The hand shaking at the final whistle showed how much respect these two teams have for each other. A match in which the EBBs led by two nil but their eagerness to score more goals meant that three points were reduced to one. As Phil and Steve said to the EBBs after the match, sometimes, it is better to hold on to what you have and defend it rather than wanting more goals. After all said, the EBBs are still top of the table. Yes, I know, one should not count the chickens before the eggs have hatched but sometimes one should keep at least one eye on the prize. So come on you EBBs! You remain undefeated. Try to keep it that way for the rest of the season.

The EBBs were back again at their home ground Pixmore this weekend for an early afternoon kick off. Wymondley Park had the upper hand for the two fixtures between these two teams in last season's campaign. However the EBBs did beat them in the fourth round of the County Cup on their way to win the Cup.

Unlike last week, the EBBs seemed subdued during warm up. They were lacking in communication and for some unknown reason, they appeared spooked. The lack of communication carried through into the match despite pre-match talk for there to be some.

It was cloudy with some rain clouds in the distance but there were also breaks in the cloud. The teams had the usual inspection by referee who also reminded them of the rules and FA "Respect" campaign. With the squad back to full strength this week, the usual 4-4-2 line up was Sam in goal, Tommy, Charley, Oscar and Stuart as the back four; midfield consisting of Harry, Alli, Cam and Jake; with Ethan and Reuben up front and Marcus on the bench.

EBBs kicked off, playing against the slope. Right from the start, Sam was having to make some saves. There was pressure and counter pressure from both sides. EBBs could not string up good passing like they normally do. Un-weighted passes or passes missing their targets.  Wymondley were strong. Four minutes into the match saw a long range ball launched from near the halfway line. The ball bounced in front of Sam who had to back pedal quickly and stretched out his hand to catch the ball above and behind his head. This was a very close shave. Long range, Rory Delap like throw-ins, were cut out or headed back by the EBBs defense.

Wymondley had far too much space and time on the ball. EBBs opportunities to cross the ball into the eighteen yard box were missed. This was totally different from last week when the ball was being crossed into the box time and time again. Eventually, EBBs had a good movement on their left wing, the ball came out to Reuben, he ran it and had a left foot shot with the ball going across the Wymondley goal mouth, just missed. A second opportunity came, this time Reuben had another shot which hit the wood work and came out, Harry ran onto it and took a shot but it hit a Wymondley defender and came out. Suddenly hopes were raised along the touch line. Jake had an open goal but the shot went wide. Surely but gradually, EBBs started to do what they did in their previous match.

Wymondley's tactics was to keep launching long range balls like cannonballs towards the EBBs. Each time the EBBs defense was able to cut out or send it back. Fifteen minutes into the match saw a tactical switch in the EBBs line up with Marcus coming on for Jake and moving to left midfield, Cam to right midfield with Harry up front and Reuben dropping to centre midfield. Marcus started to make his usual runs on the left flank. Chinks of EBBs usual passing play started to surface. Marcus threaded a ball into the hole, Ethan ran onto it, had a shot come cross across an open goal, Cam was onto it but hit it wide.

From a drop ball, Wymondley won the ball. Their forward took a rocket like shot with Sam making the save of his life by palming it over the crossbar to keep the EBBs in the match. Wymondley continued to bear down on EBBs who looked some what tired. Sam continued to make saves, getting down quickly to smother the ball.  Game was becoming tough for the EBBs. There was minimal tackling from the EBBS and no second ball.

With literally one minute to go before half time, Wymondley won a free kick and launched another Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile towards the EBBs goal, Charley won the ball, put a great ball into the hole, Marcus was quick onto it, ran it towards the goal and hammered it so hard with his left foot that the Wymondley goalkeeper could only palm it out onto Harry who was running in and put it in the net to make it 1-0, phew, what a relief!

At half time the boys were reminded of their passing during warm up and how that had been carried into the game. They were told not to be afraid of Wymondley just because they were bigger. It was a mediocre performance and the boys acknowledged that.

It was great to see the coaching team getting the EBBs to gather around in a circle, shoulder to shoulder, including the coaches and belting out "We are the better Team!"

Slight change in the line up for the second half with Jake coming on for Ethan but on the right wing, Cam back in midfield and Reuben joining up front. As soon as the second half started, EBBs became vocal and within a minute, Jake was through on the right, in the eighteen yard box, tried to cross it in but it went wide.

Wymondley continued with their cannonball fire. Each free kick was launched towards the goal with Sam catching well. Following one such free kick, the ball came out to Cam who threaded it to Reuben. Reuben then ran it a little bit and shot with his left foot into the net to make 2-0.

EBBs started playing well, four misses from Ethan, one hit the cross bar and a miss from Marcus. Stuart put a few balls in the hole. I counted three lots of triangular passes between the EBBs but still some long range dangerous balls kept coming from Wymondley with Sam making good saves each time.

EBBs won a corner when Harry had a shot which hit the Wymondley goalkeeper's knee and came out for the corner; Harry took it short, when the ball was delivered into the box, it went out for another corner. By now the boys had become vocal. Harry delivered a great cross into the box, Ethan latched onto it to make it 3-0.

Given their recent performances, the first half did not show the EBBs in the best light. Perhaps the EBBs supporters have got accustomed to them playing so well that it is expected of them every time. As far as the first half was concerned, it was a bad day in the office. In the second half they played a bit better, although still tentative at times. As they say, the mark of true Champions is how they overcome adversity. To win 3-0 against a physically strong Wymondley side is a great achievement. More importantly, EBBs defense is becoming rock solid. Another clean sheet and another three points to remain top of the league. Congratulations is in order boys.

(Eye on the Ball)

This weekend saw a massive shock defeat for Chelsea. Until now they have had a 100% record this season and at the top of the Premier League table before they were knocked off by Wigan. This is yet another lesson on how not to be too complacent and take things for granted. Ok, they were down to 10 players but that is inevitable at times. Bearing that in mind, the EBBs who have been very strong this season, prepared at Pixmore to play Fairlands who have lost all their matches this season and have been languishing at the bottom of the Division 1 table.

The EBBs were very vocal in their pre-match warm up as they were urged by the coaching team to communicate with one another, to play as one team and to play the easy ball. More importantly, they were urged not to be complacent and to have a good game.

Given the Indian Summer we have been having lately, it was a glorious sunny, blue skies morning at Pixmore and pretty hot. The ground was unusually well prepared. It had been re-lined and cut to near perfect. To top it up, we had some EBBs supporters acting as grounds men, going round and ensuring that all holes were completely filled and that there were no debris on the pitch. So, perfect conditions, glorious weather, bring on the game!

The match kicked off just after eleven o' clock, following the pre-match inspection by the referee. Again, like last week, there was no one on the bench. A 4-4-2 formation with Sam in goal, a back four line up consisting of Tommy, Charley, Oscar and Stuart; mid-field of Ethan, Alli, Jake and Marcus; with Harry and Reuben up front.

Fairlands kicked off, but the ball was immediately intercepted by EBBs defense. EBBs had swift movement, from defense, the ball was moved left, left, left and within 42 seconds of kick-off, Reuben had a shot on goal with the Fairlands goalkeeper catching well. When the goalkeeper released the ball, it was immediately headed back by Jake. In the first two minutes the EBBs were bearing down on Fairlands with good quality passing football. There was a noticeable increase in the number of EBBs supporters this weekend. They were very vocal in encouraging the boys.

Two minutes into the game saw the first goal for the EBBs. This came from good quality passing from Oscar who intercepted the ball, passed the ball out to the right to Stuart who then ran the ball on the right flank, whipped it in dangerously across the goal with Harry tapping it into the net for the EBBs to make it 1-0.

There were good overlaps between Stuart and Ethan. EBBs maintained their pressure on Fairlands for the majority of the first half. Even with one man down at about fifteen minutes into the game, Fairlands could not capitalize on this. When the squad was eventually at full strength, there was a switch in formation with Jake moving to right wing, Reuben dropping to mid field and Ethan up front to get a breather.

Fairlands at times looked completely disorganised. EBBs back four maintained their shape and cut out the danger when it was called for. Apart from a spell when Fairlands had four successive corners and when they counter attacked after the EBBs short taken corner was not pulled off, they didn't get many chances. Fairlands efforts were stifled by the EBBs defense. However, there was a momentary trepidation for the EBBs supporters when a very similar incident to last week's in which the throw-in was mistakenly awarded to the opposition and they scored from it. This time the defense was well organised and cleared the ball. Time and time again, EBBs mid field pushed the ball out to the wings. Fairlands could not deal with this. A few of the Fairlands' goal kicks were intercepted or headed back by Reuben. It took Fairlands quite a while to realise this before switching their goal kicks from right to left in an attempt to stop him from intercepting and sending the ball back.

The score remained 1-0 at half time. The half time team talk was about how outstanding the EBBs had played but they needed to put the ball in the back of the net or face a draw with Fairlands. They were urged to communicate and to do what they do best and not to switch off.

Immediately after the half time kick-off, with the EBBs playing from the upper slope of the pitch, EBBs won a corner; Jake delivered the ball well into the box. Fairlands defended, ball came out outside the eighteen yard box, Ethan intercepted, beat his marker, turned and let rip with a killer left foot shot that is now becoming a trade mark. The net rippled to make it 2-0 in just three minutes into the second half. You could not get a better goal than this, definitely a contender for goal of the season.

EBBs continued to pressurize Fairlands; they became very, very vocal. Fairlands had a quick throw in from their right flank and had a short which hit the side netting. Time and time again the ball was being pushed out to the wings. Good call from Tommy for the ball. Brilliant over lapping between Tommy and Marcus. Likewise on the right side of the pitch. Sammy was coming out early to collect the ball.

Sammy released the ball to Tommy who then ran it down the left flank, poked it to Harry. Harry ran it, beat the goalkeeper, took a shot which hit the wood work and came out for Ethan to put the ball in the net making it 3-0.

There was an "easy" ball from Sammy, a great pass from Oscar to Marcus and from Marcus to Tommy who took a sweet left foot shot from well outside the eighteen yard box to hit the top right corner of the net, to make it 4-0 with great jubilation from all around.  Excellent goal to also earn Tommy's goal a contender for goal of the season.

The last goal was from the penalty spot; Ethan drove the ball low to the bottom left corner to make it 5-0.

Another match in which the EBBs made full use of the width. At times, one could hear Fairlands' management team telling their boys that it was all too easy. Those Liverpool and England Fans who have been following the progress of Glenn Johnson would have noticed some similarity between the way Glenn and Stuart play. An attacking right back but that's were the similarity ends because Stuart can whip in more dangerous ball into the box than Glenn. Stuart was relentless and time and time again he crossed that ball dangerously into the box.

So the EBBs marched on this week to go top of the table following their 5-0 victory against Fairlands Youth. EBBs built on what they did last week by using the width to deadly effect and playing excellent flowing football, some of the best they have ever played. EBBs worked very hard and moved the ball well to produce several near misses for Alli, Ethan, Harry, Jake, Marcus, Reuben and Stuart. The goal margin could have been much more but 5-0 with a clean sheet who could have asked for more? Three more points in the bag. Excellent job, well done!

This is 'Super Sunday' in the fixtures calendar as the two giants met at Buntingford Community Pitch for a very pulsating and exciting match. Last season's Division 1 League winners, Buntingford Cougars Blues versus last season's County Champions and League Cup Winners, Eagles Blues. Buntingford Cougars beat all but the EBBs in their last season campaign. There is fierce local rivarily between these two teams which tends to bring the best out of both teams. On this particular occasion the EBBs played magnificent and splendid football to win against their rival by an unprecedented massive margin, 2-6. This was certainly no mean feat as the squad was not at 100% capacity. Some of the boys who played were also not feeling their best. Who would have known that? Look at that score line again!

On a bright and hot Sunday afternoon with a two O' Clock kick off, part of the pre-match talk emphasized on the boys helping each other out and covering well for those who were not at 100% and also to "make the ball do the work". So with an empty bench, the 4-4-2 line up was Sam in goal, a defensive line of Tommy, Charley, Oscar and Stuart; mid-field of Ethan, Cam, Alli and Marcus; with Harry and Reuben up front. As the EBBs broke Buntingford's un-beaten record last season and also beat them in the League Cup final, it was anticipated that Buntingford will come off the block flying. Instead it was the EBBs who were flying. Within 25 seconds of the kick off whistle blowing, the ball was inside the Buntingford's net. This came about from a brilliant movement by the EBBs. Buntingford kicked off and almost immediately the ball was intercepted. Marcus passed it back to Tommy for an overlap run but Tommy quickly passed the ball to Reuben who then ran the ball along the left flank to the corner of the  pitch and crossed it in strongly on the ground. The ball slipped through the Buntingford goal keeper's hand, hit the inside of his left ankle and came out to meet Ethan who swiftly tucked it into the back of the net, 0-1. As far as I can remember, this is the fastest goal the EBBs have scored but I remain to be corrected.

The EBBs were not satisfied with this as within one minute of the first goal, the ball was back into Buntingford's net to make it 0-2. In this instance, it was Harry who ran the ball, had a strike towards goal to have the ball kicked out by Buntingford's defense, it come out towards Cam who caught it sweetly on the volley into the bottom left corner of the net.

Being two nil down within two minutes of the match kicking off did not deter Buntingford nor dispirit them, they were urged to press on and "liven it up!" and so they did. EBBs where boxed in but the EBBs defense worked tirelessly to keep the ball out. Oscar was on form and kept heading the ball out and following up with more headers. Four minutes into the game saw a great hit from the Buntingford Cougars forward which came off the EBBs woodwork and went out for a goal kick, the first of three shots that came off the EBBs woodwork.

Marcus was on great form, time and time again he beat his marker. On one occasion, having beaten his marker, had a great run down the left flank with the ball, crossed it into Reuben who just missed putting the ball into the net.

Buntingford Cougars were making some good movements. They started to make Sam work hard by taking free shots from outside the area but Sam caught the shots well.

Buntingford put immense pressure on the EBBs, Alli battled hard in mid field. Several corners from Buntingford in quick succession. On one such corner, Ethan threw his body to cut out the ball for another corner. Tommy defended well as Buntingford continued to box in the EBBs. But with each attack, EBBs kept clearing the ball. The Cougars' head coach was very vocal in encouraging his team. Buntingford's strong attacks continued, they squeezed the EBBs but the EBBs back four maintained their line very well with Charley being vocal to ensure this. Midway through the first half, Buntingford hit the woodwork for the second time.

EBBs did not have many attacks but when they did, it was clever, it was swift and effective. Harry was effective in turning his markers. Reuben had a strike on goal with the Buntingford goal keeper catching the ball. Oscar was putting his name on the ball each time as waves of attacks kept coming from Buntingford. Twenty two minutes into the game, EBBs won a corner and when the ball came into the box, Reuben got his head onto it but it went wide. Less than a minute later, Reuben received the ball, tricked his marker and had one of his powerful shots with the net bulging at the back to make it 0-3.

With less than five minutes to go before half time, Buntingford won a corner, the corner was taken long and one of the Cougars latched onto it but the ball hit the post quite hard, when it came out the ball was cleared for another corner to Buntingford. Cougars' supporters on the side line urged their boys to "keep going". Buntingford took the corner short, EBBs did not closed down quickly enough, the ball was moved nearer the goal and a cross released from the short taken corner. The ball was not cleared, there was a scramble in front of the EBBs' goal mouth with one of the Buntingford's forward latching onto the ball and slotting it into the EBBs goal to make it 1-3. Memories of last week's match started to surface. In that match, the EBBs switched off during the period when they were leading by 3-0 and then ended up trying to defend their 3-2 lead.

At half time, the boys were praised for their superb work but were also urged not to switch off like last week. To play the ball on the deck, to work for each other and not to concede any more goals which will ensure victory but more importantly to maintain their shape and use the width. There was also emphasis on wining the second ball and putting the ball in the hole.

In the second half, EBBs continued to work very had for each other. Ethan was having great runs on the right with support from Stuart. Cam put a long ball into the hole on the right and Reuben chased it down. The ball came back out with Buntingford winning a free kick. A shot was taken by Buntingford. Again, Buntingford hit the woodwork for the third time as a result of the free kick. When the ball was eventual cleared, Sam released the ball on the EBBs' left flank. Buntingford put the ball out for EBBs "throw in". There was some confusion as to who had the "throw in". Buntingford took the "throw in" very quickly whilst the EBBs tried to re-adjust for the "throw in". By now, Buntingford had moved the ball along their left flank. With only Charley in defense, Buntingford had an easy shot to score their second goal to make it 2-3.

One minute later,  Sam released the ball to the right flank, Ethan won the ball and ran it along the right wing, crossed it in to Harry who slotted it into the Buntingford's net to make it 2-4. In just over a minute from Harry's goal, EBBs won a throw. Ethan took the throw on very quickly to Harry who won the ball and on the volley, lobbed it over the Buntingford's goal keeper to make it 2-5. By now EBB's were once more on the march, started playing fantastic attacking football. They won a corner, Cam delivered it well into the box with Ethan heading it into the net to make it 2-6.

The rest of the second half saw the EBBs defend very well and moved the ball well. When they did attack, the defense moved forward with good cover. On one counter attack from Buntingford, Stuart gave good cover and ran from the middle of the pitch to cut out the danger on the left flank. Stuart also made some clever quick throws to put pressure on Buntingford. Charley made sure the defense maintained their line. Ethan had some near misses which could have earned him a hat trick. Sam had good saves by coming out and clearing the ball. Buntingford had two more chances but didn't take it. Towards the end, EBBs put more pressure on Buntingford and had more possession of the ball and frequently forced Buntingford to commit errors.

Coming from last week's good performance this was a match in which the EBBs were outstanding, they played intelligently to win. EBBs had width and made full use of the pitch. The man to man marking was exceptional. The EBBs did not have as many attacks as Buntingford but when they did, they move the ball well and played the ball on the ground, they were superb. Despite the odds against the EBBs in that they were not at 100% strength and having no substitution, they worked hard as a team. They worked hard for each other and won convincingly against a very good and strong opposition. Even the opposition supporters were asking, "Why don't we play like that?" In the end, the Clash of the Titans looked like a simply walk over but it was due to sheer determination and excellent football from the EBBs. Well done boys, well done team, well done!!!

(Don't let that ball bounce!)

This weekend saw the Eagles Blues Boys (EBBs) travel to Bishop Stortford for their first away match of the season. Yes, it was against a Bishop Stortford team but not the same team that the EBBs played against last week. Like Letchworth, Bishop Stortford have many teams. This match was against the BSCFC Town as opposed to the Rangers, the opponent from the previous week.

Unlike the Rangers, BSCFC Town were runner up in Division 1 last season and are amongst the teams who won against the EBBs albeit that the EBBs were not at full strength. BSCFC Town won both matches of the double header partly because they played a very physical competitive game coupled with the fact that there were some experimentation with positional play for the EBBs. So here was an opportunity for the EBBs to redeem themselves.

On arrival at Grange Paddocks, home ground of BSCFC, one could see the early signs of autumn, with leaves appearing on the ground and the temperature lowering after the summer months. It was very cloudy and there was a chill in the air and at one point a short drizzle. Some EBBs supporters quickly ran back to their cars to get some warmer clothes. The grass on the allocated pitch was well cut but there were patches of dried dead grass and the ground was very hard.

The pre-match team talk reminded the EBBs of the hard ground and the consequences of it. The boys were urged to incorporate this in their play and so they did. A different line-up this week saw a starting formation of 4-5-1 with Sam in goal. Tommy, Charley Oscar and  Stuart as back four, a mid-field comprising of Jake, Cam, Reuben, Alli, Marcus with Harry as the lone striker and Ethan on the bench.

BSCFC kicked off and immediately pushed forward. In the first few minutes, they won a lot of the ball. Broke the EBBs play and managed to stifle the EBBs from their usual passing game.

The mid-field of five didn't maintain their shape. Back four maintained their shape well.  Charley was verbal in ensuring that the shape was maintained. Some good interception from Oscar to stop BSCFC. An early corner for the EBBs was taken short but did not yield as the BSCFC Town ran the ball straight back to EBBs' half.

A long ball from Cam was chested down by Reuben in the 18 yard box but before he could turn to kick the ball, one of the BSCFC defenders kicked it out earning the EBBs a corner.  As Harry was about to take the corner, Cam drew away majority of the BSCFC players by running towards Harry and they ran after him. Almost instantaneously, the ball was in flight and as the ball came into the box, the one defender remaining in the 6 yard box headed the ball into his own net to make it 0-1.

With one goal up, the EBBs formation was changed to 4-4-2 as Reuben joined Harry up front. The boys were urged to push up. Strong tackles from Marcus, great ball from Oscar into 18 yard box. Ball came out again with Charley sending it back, Reuben flicking it on but could not latch onto the return ball back to him.  EBBs started playing well, looking much sharper. Good interplay between Marcus and Reuben.

Ten minutes into the game saw a shot from Alli towards the goal with one of the BSCFC Town defender ensuring that the ball went into his own net, 0-2. It was such a hit that the ball would have ended up in the net anyway so I'm definitely giving this one to Alli. From then on, EBBs played strong, pressing BSCFC well into their own half and maintaining the pressure. Every time the ball came out EBBs defense track it down and cut it out. The boys had started to enjoy themselves. Charley and Oscar even managed to exchange a "Give me a Five". One good play saw Sam throw the ball out to Stuart on the right flank. Stuart shifted the ball out and passed it to Jake who pushed it forward to Reuben who flicked it to Cam. Cam took a shot which skimmed over the opposition's cross-bar. That would have been a sweet as a nut goal. With 12 minutes to half time, Ethan came on for Reuben, by now BSCFC had lost their shape completely. A couple of counter-attacks from BSCFC saw the ball cleared by the EBBs defense. Harry missed an opportunity to put one into the net. The referee let the game flow despite pushes and shoves from the BSCFC.

BSCFC made some substitutions and this seemed to have effect because suddenly, BSCFC started to push up and put pressure on the EBBs. They had one strike which went well over the cross-bar. Suddenly Sam started to do a bit more work. BSCFC boys were being urged to pressurize the EBBs. Their throw-on was headed out by Charley, followed by another throw-on which was well cleared by Stuart who covered the situation very well. Some good cut out be Tommy.

Just before half-time, Reuben came on for Jake. Charley made some great runs and some great tackles. EBBs maintained the pressure till half-time. A good first half in which the EBBs played great football with a solid defense.

The message at half-time was for the boys to carry on doing what they were doing as the way they played was outstanding.

Half-time kicked off with BSCFC immediately on top of their game with their tail up. Their half-time team talk really did boast their spirits. They started moving the ball well, stringing up some good passes and pushing into EBBs half. On their right flank, they strongly exerted pressure on the EBBs. The words "strong!", "strong!" and "second ball" kept emanating from the BSCFC management team.

EBBs seems to be everywhere and were urged to get their shape back however they did battle hard to evenly match BSCFC. On occasions EBBs were exposed but Charley covered well. Then Ethan had a shot at goal which went just wide. BSCFC had a corner which Charley came out and cleared it well.  EBBs then counter attacked with the ball going out for a corner to them. Cam took the corner and had a great delivery into the box which Jake headed but went just slightly off the target and from the touch line one could clearly hear "Ahhhhh!" from the EBBs supporters.

The next attack saw a good pass from Reuben to Stuart who then ran the ball on the right flank and managed to win a corner. The ball came in, Reuben had a hard shot, BSCFC goal keeper palmed it out, Ethan latched onto it, we all thought that it was definitely going to hit the back of the net but it went wide. Seconds later Ethan had a fantastic left foot shot into the BSCFC net making it 0-3. The next attack from the EBBs saw Ethan kick the ball from an angle towards the BSCFC goal,  the ball was virtually over the line, Reuben ran into it to ensure it was in the back of the net but was judged to have handled the ball in the area so the goal was disallowed for what would have been 0-4. The referee asked for the free-kick to be taken from the goal line.

With the rotating changes to give the boys a rest, defense seems to lose it's shape. At one point the EBBs pushed so much into the opposition's half, the defense was gone completely but Charley covered very well. BSCFC started to counter attack and passing well. Again Charley  covered well. Suddenly Sam was back into the game.

BSCFC Town had a change and took it, it was a great strike from outside the eighteen yard box into the back of EBBs net, there was no way Sam could have got to that ball. By now, EBBs were looking tired and being pushed around, shape gone out of the window. Up front EBBs did not hold the ball up thus putting the defense under pressure. BSCFC suddenly seem to have so much energy and running around very well. The goal gave them a great boost. It was no surprise when within three minutes, BSCFC scored their next goal. This spurred them on even further, they were hurrying things and trying to get a draw. The last corner kick had the EBBs supports hearts in their mouth as a BSCFC player had a free header which went wide. Phew! what a relief and it was an even greater relief to hear the final whistle seconds later.

This is a match in which EBBs had a strong performance, dominated the game in the first half and for the greater part, were in the opposition's half. In the second half, EBBs thought the game was won, became complacent and switched off. Towards the end, BSCFC played good football and tried to get a draw from the match whereas EBBs made a few mistakes. However, it must be said that the game is not over until the final whistle is blown and it is a lesson on how not to be too complacent but a win is win. Three points in the bag. Excellent work boys.

(1 Minute's Silence)

The EBBs kicked off their second season in 11-aside football with a very convincing 7-3 home win against the newly promoted Bishop Stortford Community Football Club (BSCFC) Rangers.

On a cloudy and busy Sunday midday, the EBBs supporters were thin on the ground. This was probably due to not finding anywhere to park as Car Park spilt over to the grass verges and onto the roads. This was due to several matches being played almost simultaneously.

Following an examination of the boys kit, in particular, their boots and studs and a quick chat with the referee; both Teams held a one minute's silence in respect for the BSCFC Treasurer who unexpectedly passed away late last week. By now EBBs supporters were growing in numbers.

In the pre match talk, the EBBs were told to hold their nerves and respect the opposition as they are a good team who have been promoted to Division 1 and to communicate to each other.

A starting formation of 4-4-2 with Tommy, Oscar, Charley and  Stuart, Jake, Cam, Alli, Marcus, Ethan and Harry with Reuben on the bench. EBBs moved the ball well from kick-off but were almost put under pressure from BSCFC Rangers as Rangers pressed forward. Good solid defensive work from the back four ensured the ball was cleared or returned. Good early shot from Marcus, went wide and was deflected for a corner.

EBBs need to release the ball quicker. At times, we had one touch too many. BSCFC where playing the long ball, one went over the defence and bounced in from of Sam who was able to step back quickly to catch it.

Far too many times EBBs came under pressure because the ball was not release early enough. BSCFC played some good football.

Stuart drove the ball forward and put a great ball in the box to force a corner. A quick short corner between Marcus and Jake saw Jake drive the ball right into the eighteen yard box and crossed it in. Again too many touches meant that EBBs did not capitalized on it with the consequence that EBBs where once again under counter attack from BSCFC Rangers.

Six minutes into the game and it was still very much in the balance. BSCFC Rangers drove forward but the ball was very well intercepted by Cam. Some good movements from Harry and Ethan but unfortunately EBBs were caught off side. Again BSCFC Rangers attacked but the ball was well intercepted by Jake. Ten minutes into the game saw EBBs starting to pressurize BSCFC Rangers. All the EBBs players bar the back four where now inside the Ranger's eighteen yard box.

A David Beckham like free kick across the face of the goal saw Ethan latching onto it to hit into the top right corner or the net and with that a great relief from the EBBs' supporters.

EBBs continued to pressurize Rangers with good movements with a few near misses from Alli.

Three minutes later, from a short taken corner kick saw Cam drive the ball into the eighteen yard box, there was an excellent hit from Ethan from within the 18 yards box to tuck the ball into the top right corner of the Ranger's goal.

As the matched progressed, there was an incident. The boys thought that the referee had blown the whistle, which I suspect came from the match being played on an adjacent pitch. EBBs stopped play and so did some of the BSCFC Rangers boys, Sam initially came out to pick the ball up but due to the confusion, hesitated. The referee waved on for play to continue but before Sam could re-track to get to the ball to pick it up, one of the BSCFC player kicked the ball into EBBs' net, an unfortunate and undeservedly goal to concede.

After that EBBs had so many near misses, Alli crossbar, Reuben various, Cam crossbar.

Some good tackles from Charley. EBBs won the majority of the throws. Good interplay between Sam and Charley which drew BSCFC Rangers players out. A fantastic cross from Harry was intercepted by Cam who tucked the ball neatly into the net making it 3-1.

Good heading from Stuart to return the ball. Good clearance by the defence.

The next move was quality play from EBBs, a fantastic counter attack in which Reuben came wide to the left, Jake threaded the ball to him. Reuben used his strength and won the ball from the BSCFC Ranger player who was tracking him down. Reuben poked the ball forward with Cam latching onto it, the Rangers keeper came out for the ball but Cam moved the ball to the right to tuck it into an empty goal to make it 4-1, great play! Three minutes later, a similar move saw Ethan received the Ball and chipped it over the Rangers goal-keeper it into the net to earn him a well deserved hat-trick!

Good interception from Reuben who won a free-kick. EBBs dominated the game till half time.

An outstanding first half for the EBBs with Tommy linking well with Marcus and Harry. The boys communicating well, working hard for each other. However, at times it was congested just outside the opposition's net.

The half-time talk included setting Harry up to score a goal so as to put a smile on his face.

Half time kick off saw some switching around of players. Right from the kick off EBBs had good movements with the ball.  Good interception from Marcus. Some wonderful over-laps. A corner was taken short but we failed to capitalize on it as the Rangers won the ball and pushed out. As the second half progressed, EBBs dominated the play with good interception, good passing and attacking play. Tommy was on fire with his quick turns and ball cut outs. Good interplay between Marcus and Tommy. Sam had hardly anything to do in the second half, he was out between the half way line and 18 yards box, completely bored as the EBBs completely dominated the game. Reuben had a strike which was caught by the Rangers goal keeper. The boys were enjoying themselves. There was a long ball from EBBs defence which Harry latched on and lobbed it over the Ranger's goal keeper into the net making it 6-1 and brought a smile to Harry's face. Lots of Ouhhhs and Arhhhs from the EBB's supporters as the EBBs played some really good football. The boys were enjoying their football. At one point there was a shout of "nuts!" from Charley as he 'nutted' one of the Ranger's player.

Reuben laid a ball back to Ethan who had a shot which went over but just short of the cross-bar. Corner taken by Tommy, a great delivery into the six yards box, one of the Rangers kicked it out but didn't clear the ball well, Ethan who was just outside the 18 yards box, drove it into the net making it 7-2.

Rangers were relying on their long ball as their forwards were very quick.

There were some rolling substitutions to get the boys to play in different position.

Another good ball from Tommy was latched onto by Harry who shot and hit the cross bar and the ball came back out. Stuart and Charley were working hard in defence. EBBs pushed forward, Cam hit the cross bar.

At times, EBBs defence was very exposed. On one counter attached, Marcus ran all the way back to clear what would have been a goal against the EBBs, a very good clearance. The EBBs defence is vulnerable when we push forward and on one such occasion, the EBBs were caught out as they could not match the pace of the Ranger's strikers enabling one of the Ranger's striker to fire a well taken goal over Sam's head making it 7-3, there was no way Sam was going to get to that ball.

Great footwork from Tommy who crossed a ball in, the ball hit the crossbar.

The game finished 7-3, a well deservedly win against a good Team.

Ranger's last two goals came from counter attacks in which the EBBs defence lacked shape and at times, was not in existence because the boys move round in different positions.

All in all, a good performance from all the boys to kick start their season. Roll on next Sunday.

Having had a good rest from football over the summer months, it was now time for the County and League Champions to blow away a few cobwebs before the start of the new season. And who better to test them than the team they beat in the County Cup Final from last season. This was a friendly away against one of the best team in the County, Welwyn Pegasus Royals (WPR), who like the Eagles won their League Cup and are also their League Champions.

So on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, though slightly cool and slightly windy, on the luscious green, Knightsfield playing ground, the boys prepared for their first match with a depleted squad (13 man Squad) as some of the boys were still on their Summer holiday.

This friendly match was a good opportunity to try the boys out in different positions. A 4-4-2 formation with an initial line up which saw Sam in goal, a defensive back four of Charley, Cam, Jake and Tommy, Marcus in left mid, Ethan right mid, Stuart and Alli in the middle with Harry and Reuben up front.

The game kicked off with some good passing and attacking football from both sides. The Eagles Blues Boys (EBBs) put some early pressure on WPR in the first few minutes with WPR responding back!  The play was evenly matched with pressure and counter pressure from both sides.

9 minutes into the game EBBs lost their shape, WPR put some good movement together on their right flank. EBBs  didn't close them down quickly enough thus enabling WBR # 10 to slot one into EBBs net.

The next three goals from WPR came in quick succession. At 4 nil down, EBBs looked jaded with heads dropped and lost their shape. The EBBs had not played as many matches as WPR who had played a few games over the summer months. EBBs supporters had started to anticipate the half-time whistle, when suddenly, there was some superb passing between, Marcus, Tommy and Jack which saw the ball to Ethan who received the ball, turned and slotted it away into the right corner making it 4-1.

The half-time message to EBBs was to shut the gate and true to form, this they did. Second half, EBBs were up for it, they came out firing on all cylinders, moving the ball well, passing the ball well and putting pressure on WPR, much pressure. They truly came back to form. They started what they do well, good passing football. Tail up and the boys worked hard. Some good movement saw Reuben receive the ball and hammered it towards WPR goal. Their goalie palmed it out and Ethan was there to tuck it in, 4-2. Despite the fact that WBR had many players and the luxury of substitutions to which they used to full effect, at times in the second-half, they looked tired.  As the game progressed, Marcus and Alli made some good turns with the ball and were able to clear a huge amount of the WPR throw-ons.

EBBs had quiet a few good chances and could have come out of this match with a draw. Good solid defensive work and good goal keeping ensured that EBBs did not concede another goal in the second half. EBBs maintained their shape better in the second half. The final score did not reflect EBBs performance in the second half.

This season is all about the EBBs, as County and League Champions, they will be the Team to beat. So come on boys, for this coming season, go out and do what you do best, good passing, flowing  Football. The very best of luck for the rest of the season.
